October 9, 200718 yr we should concentrate on pitching and defense before we worry about trying to get a washed up hr king who is one turn of the knee from having a cane the rest of his life... washed up? he is hardly a shadow of his former self...and he cant run anymore(which irregardless of how many homeruns you once hit, is still important)...if he stays in baseball, he plays in the AL and is DH...any chance of bonds playing in a marlins uniform is a pipe nightmare

October 9, 200718 yr I'm not saying anyone is wrong or who's right, but for myself I have a hard time imagining Bonds signing for anything under $10 million and probably more, and as such, thinking there has to be better uses for that money were it to become available. Maybe the guy signs tomorrow (figuratively, because usually nothing happens during the playoffs/WS) but it just seems too far-fetched.
October 9, 200718 yr As several have said in other posts including myself, Bonds is going AL. He will play another few years as a DH. His position days are over. His HR record will be even more tained since he can now just play as a full time batter and not step foot on a field again.

I have not heard anybody bring up one name who will sign for a one year contract and have A. The Impact on the field that Bonds will have and B. The Impact with bringing fans to the stadium Bonds will have. No one else except for an ARod (which won't happen, of course) can bring the type of excitement/hype for the Marlins baseball that Bonds will do. C. Name some names that will a need for the Marlins that make sense and won't be a long term contract, and then I will start to buy into this argument that we can spend the money better, and I do think the money is available to spend and Loria will make an offer.

Exactly, the $10 million (give or take $3 mil) for Bonds pays for itself many times over in terms of gate sales, road revenue and franchise legitimacy.

Isn't the reason (and the point of my post) that you don't hear names thrown around - except Bonds who we know definitively will not be a San Francisco Giant next year because that decision has already been made and announced publically - is because no one can say who and who won't be available a month or so from now because the process doesn't work that way. I grabbed this off of Cot's because it's convenient but this is what I was and am referring to: Close of 2007 World Series The day after the end of the World Series marks the beginning of the 15-day period during which eligible players may elect free agency or demand a trade. Former club retains exclusive negotiating rights until 15-day filing period expires. A player who has filed for free agency may engage in general discussions with other clubs but may not discuss contract details or sign with them until the filing period ends Nov. 11. CBA, Article XX (B). 4th day after 2007 World Series Last date to request waivers on draft-excluded players until 25 days prior to the opening of the 2008 season. MLR 10 (e) (6). 16th day after 2007 World Series First day Major League free agents may negotiate and sign with a club other than their former club. Article XX (B)(2)?. November 10, 2007 End of waiver period (August 1 - November 10). Waivers secured on or after August 1, 2006, expire at 5 p.m. EST. MLR 10 ?(4). November 11, 2007 Beginning of new waiver period (November 11, 2007 - February 15, 2008). Waivers secured on or after Nov. 11, 2007, remain in effect until February 15, 2008. Exception: special waivers. November 20, 2007 Deadline day for clubs to file reserve lists for Major League club and all Minor League levels. Last date to make an off-season outright assignment of an injured player to the Minor Leagues if the player does not meet the requirements listed in Article XIX ? (b) of the CBA. December 1, 2007 Last day for clubs to offer salary arbitration to their former players who have filed for free agency. A club not offering arbitration may continue to negotiate with the player but does not receive compensation if he signs with another club. December 6, 2007 Rule 5 Draft. December 7, 2007 Last day for a free agent offered salary arbitration by his former club to accept or reject the offer. If player rejects the offer to go to arbitration, his former club may continue to negotiate with and sign him. December 12, 2007 Last day for teams to offer 2008 contracts to unsigned players, as required by Paragraph 10 (a) of the Uniform Player Contract. If you ask me the same question in six weeks I'm sure not only will I have a list, but any number of people here will have theirs as well. As each deadline passes we have a better idea who will or won't be available. I'm not trying to avoid the question but as you can see MLB has any number of deadlines and dates that affects player's status. You can't even look at the list of free agents and know definitively who and who will not re-sign with their existing team. So to mention names makes no sense. Bonds is the exception to the rule because his contract was up and the Giants were vocal about their decision. I would also say I don't know why you're stuck on a one year contract thing when there are a number of ways to allocate this "mystery" sum that could mean signing someone for more than one year.
October 9, 200718 yr There's nobody who's even a possible free agent that fits the bill as well as Bonds does, though.
October 10, 200718 yr Barry Bonds doesn't run fast anymore. He will clog the bases and not allow our faster runners to score. Every ball into LF will be a double, or even triple, as well. Even for Sean Casey. Sign Posednik. He hit a HR in the world series. :lol :lol :lol Anyone that can get on base at a .500 clip is not clogging the bases. ...sarcasm. My bad, I forgot MarlinsLou is one of like 4 posters on here that uses logic rather than wiggly feel.
October 10, 200718 yr Only a dope wouldn't think Bonds would benefit the Marlins. High OBP.....check. Likely increase in attendance (even if small).....check. Protection for Cabs.....check. I could go on and on, but there really isn't a need. The positives FAR outweigh the negatives.

Then why can't he run the bases well? Barry run's the bases very well and thats all thats important. His defense isn't so bad that his run production won't outweigh any negatives incurred. Logic is a great tool. And I don't like Barry Bonds as a person either but I'd love him to be our left fielder next year.

October 10, 200718 yr Anyone who is against Bonds playing LF in teal next year is letting their dislike of Barry THE PERSON cloud their vision of Barry THE BASEBALL PLAYER. You don't have to LIKE him for him to improve our team. Jimmy, quit while you are ahead on this one.
