Marlins Eyeing Bonds?

Featured Replies

Some people here act like we had some superb defensive team this past year and brining on Bonds would sabotage that. Fact is our defense sucked, our pitching sucked. Brining in Bonds would only be an upgrade from last years team overall and anybody who can put their jaded views from hatred aside could see that easily.

Yeah, that's basically it. When you have a team as intrinsically flawed as ours, you pad a position of strength to the point that it becomes 'elite.'

Bonds in this lineup gives us, almost without question, the best lineup in the NL. That's worth it.

then we will only finish 4th! :thumbup :|

I don't get you.

The best team in terms of OPS in both league's made the playoffs. BOTH LEAGUES. Hell, the top-2 teams in terms of OPS made the playoffs.

Are you saying that OPS doesn't matter? That it's all about speed and defense?

Does anyone REALLY believe that OPS be damned, it's about stealing 50 bases and slapping singles?

Swift, why even respond anymore? Statistics dictate your point to be the correct thought. No use even wasting any additional time trying to prove a point that people blinded by hatred will always refuse to acknowledge. If Barry Bonds' name was 'Ken Griffey Jr.' people would be all for this move.

im not turning this into in an OPS discussion...fact is...you have a better shot of pitching in, and winning game 7 of the world series next year than barry has of ever playing in a marlins uniform...and was our offense our problem this year? no...lets fix what is broken

i dont hate barry bonds...not at all...i respect his accomplishments within the game as a historian and a baseball fan...but i dont want him anywhere near a marlins uniform...sorry...the negatives with him vastly outweigh the positives for the marlins as an organization...did andre dawson give the marlins credibility? or did winning two world series championships win us a title? those teams were built on speed, defense, pitching, and great situational baseball...OPS doesnt recognize the difference between striking out in the clutch and hitting a homerun 9 runs down...but world series rings sure know the difference...

To say that speed-defense-pitching is the only way to win is rediculous.

yes I agree that pitching does win championships but you tell me whos out there in the pitchers market that we can sign for a one year deal?

This is freaking Barry Bonds we are talking about. I dont understand the hate for arguably the greatest hitter of all time and definitely the most feared hitter of all time.

Not only will it improve our team on the field but it will improve our publicity and also increase our attendance.

I dont see this getting done but I just dont understand how you could be against a move like this if it were to get done.

Yeah, you're right. It's so hard to understand why people dislike a notorious a$$hole who the majority feel is a cheater. I'll say this much: I'm surprised by all the Bonds love here. For those who support him, do you feel he is innocent, or do you just not care? There's a lot of intelligent people on this board, and I can't imagine it would be the latter.

I just dont care. Bonds wasnt the only guy using steroids. Everyone from Bonds to the 25th man on the roster was using steroids. Ofcourse pitchers are excused from steroid talk too. All I know is that Bonds, like him or hate him, is the best ball player of my lifetime. No one even comes close. If the Marlins have a chance to get him in a Marlins uni, you do it. He is still a premier player and with him, cabs and HanRam in the same lineup, I am practically drooling here.

So are trying to excuse bad behavior by citing more bad behavior? Obviously the guy who's considered one of the greatest ever, and who broke perhaps the most cherished record in professional sports is going to get the most attention.

Of course having a guy like Bonds in the same lineup as Hanley and Cabrera is drool-inducing , but I cannot find it in me to cheer for someone, who in my opinion, has made a mockery of the game.

of course its not the only way to win...but for the marlins...playing in dolphin stadium...its the only way the marlins will win

and i dont know what pitchers we can sign...but im sure there are plenty out there available one way or another who can stabilitize our staff until some of our youngsters are ready to make significant contributions

im not hating on barry bonds...but his value to our organization isnt much...and there is no credible sources out there that can even concieve of him wanting to be a marlin...so at this point...its nothing more than a pipedream...and will in all likely hood, stay that way

and i dont think he will improve our team that much...adding to a strength does not make you better...to do a football cross reference...what was the patriots glaring weakness last year? their wide reciever corps...what did they do? signed stallworth and traded for welker and moss...they make their weakness a strength...the marlins glaring weaknesses were pitching and defense and if we expect to get better, we need to shore up those areas or we are doomed to the basement yet again

Did Babe Ruth make a mockery of the game by setting records against only the best white athletes? Did Hank Aaron make a mockery of the game by playing in an era when, by many reports, a great majority of players got through the season with the help of greenies or amphetamines? Did Ty Cobb make a mockery of he game when he stabbed a black dude for being "uppity" (look it up, it happened).

Bonds is a product of the era he plays in, which is the steroid or juiced era. I hate when people judge him against Aaron and then say he "cheated" his way to the record. You have to judge him against the people he played in. It's a different game now, and he's dominated this game like no other. Say what you will about him, but he was by far the best offensive player during a period when offense was at an all time high. He still would've been the best player of he played in a 600 run per year environment as a 900 run per year environment. Why? Because he was the best player. Period. And he still is one of the best.

And Jimmy, it would be great if we could improve our pitching and defense without hurting our strength. But we won't be able to. The only way we get more pitching is if we trade for it from our position players, since pitching in FA is way overpriced. Do you really want to remove Uggla, Hanley, Miguel, Jeremy, or Willingham for a defensive minded player? I'd rather add to a strength than take from a strength and add to a weakness.

of course we can improve our pitching and defense and without hurting our offense very much...personally...i love willy, i love what he brings to the table, that said...he is probably the least valuable of the particular players you mentioned...and if we didnt float his name out there to see what we could get...we would be idiots...and again...adding to a strength so that your weaker everywhere else is not the way to cover up inabilities...and i agree...FA pitching is overpriced...especially for us...but i bet there are oodles of guys out there who are fringe major leaguers who cant keep the ball in the ballpark in places like cincy, texas, philly, etc. where their own value to their organization is low and these guys could be had for very cheap...not saying we need a roster overhaul here...but some tinkering is def needed to improve where we lack

So you are saying we should go out and sign scrub pitchers? This improves our pitching how?

We don't need fringe major leaguers to improve. We have tons of fringe major leaguers right now. And they are all like 22. If we are just going to plug in a bunch of scrubs, we might as well just forgo that and give Gaby, Volstud, and the rest of them the chance. They won't be any worse, and we won't have to trade for them.

You make it sound like there is no chance your boy is definitely not on anything illegal

I'm not saying he is, but let's not be naive here

Josh Willingham is much more valuable to us than any other team.

If it weren't for that damn OBP he'd be our Scotty Pods.

Where did I deny that steroids have been used by other baseball players?

The protection Bonds would receive from Miguel if he hit third would be ridiculous. This lineup would be the most feared in the game:

1. Hanley Ramirez - R

2. Dan Uggla - R

3. Barry Bonds - L

4. Miguel Cabrera - R

5. Jeremy Hermida - L

6. Josh Willingham - R

7. CF/C

8. CF/C

9. P

Whoever plays center or whoever catches would be moot IMO. That's at least 150 HR's from only SIX players.
