Posted October 10, 200717 yr Still may be a little while before the Marlins name their new pitching coach. They're in the process of interviewing in-house candidates this week. The group consists of bullpen coach Steve Foster, former Marlins pitching coach and current minor league pitching coordinator Wayne Rosenthal, Triple-A pitching coach Rich Gale and Class-A Jupiter pitching coach Reid Cornelius. Former Marlins pitching coach Mark Wiley is a legit candidate as well, but the Marlins likely won't get to speak with him until after the Rockies are eliminated from the playoffs. Don't know this for a fact, but my guess is Wiley will be scouting the ALCS for the Rockies. Scanning the Baseball America directory, three names jumped out at me: Bryan Harvey, Dennis Martinez and Ricky Bones. Martinez may be the most accomplished of the group, but he may be a little green for the job. He coached the Cardinals' Gulf Coast rookie ball team last season. Harvey's son, Kris, was an outfielder for Class-A Jupiter last season. Bryan Harvey was the pitching coach for low-A Asheville in the Rockies' system. Bones is intriguing. He was an all-star reliever and spent the last two of his 11 seasons with the Marlins in 2000-01. Pretty sure he still makes his home in South Florida and manager Fredi Gonzalez knows him from their time together with the Marlins. Bones spent 2007 as the pitching coach at Double-A Binghamton in the Mets system. http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_baseb...ing-coach-.html It's nice to have someone in the local media still involved with the organization in the offseason giving us updates. Sometimes I think the local guys forget we have a team after October 1st.
October 10, 200717 yr I'm down for Wiley, Rosenthal, or Bryan Harvey. uhhh, why Bryan Harvey? Just for the hell of it?
October 10, 200717 yr I thought this was pretty insightful to point out that the timing of the World Series plays a significant part in determining who our next pitching coach might be. I hadn't really thought about that in terms of filling the spot but it makes perfect sense. I guess all we do is wait.
October 10, 200717 yr I'm down for Wiley, Rosenthal, or Bryan Harvey. uhhh, why Bryan Harvey? Just for the hell of it? Pretty much. But he is a candidate for a reason...

October 10, 200717 yr Figured I'd post this in this thread. Leo Mazzone probably would prefer to end up with the Yankees if he leaves the Orioles, but the Mariners and Marlins could be two other possibilities. Mazzone's friend, former Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo, is a candidate to join the Mariners' coaching staff. The Marlins also have an opening for a pitching coach, and Mazzone knows manager Fredi Gonzalez from their days together with the Braves . . . http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7315170 Just speculation from Rosenthal.
October 11, 200717 yr I think Mazzone's best chance of being the coach he was in Atlanta would be Florida. The pitching staff is stacked after pitchers like JJ, Nolasco, Sanchez comeback from injury and rehab and the prospects mature. Baltimore was like commiting suicide.
October 11, 200717 yr I'd love to see Mark Wiley come back, but if you told me we had a chance at Mazzone two years ago, I'd laugh at you. That would be impressive to see him on our staff.
October 11, 200717 yr I'd love to see Mark Wiley come back, but if you told me we had a chance at Mazzone two years ago, I'd laugh at you. That would be impressive to see him on our staff. Doubt we could afford him. He would want more than Freddi makes, and deservedly so. I'm all for Wiley. He knows the staff and I thought it was a mistake for the FO to crumble to Girardi's wishes in the first place. Same type of arguement could be made for Rosey, and he would be my second pick.
October 11, 200717 yr I would make a sacrifice to the baseball gods if mazzone became our pitching coach otherwise wiley please
October 11, 200717 yr RICKEY FREAKING BONES?! WTF! :lol I'd love to see him teach Yoga to all our guys.
October 12, 200717 yr RICKEY FREAKING BONES?! WTF! :lol I'd love to see him teach Yoga to all our guys. CRS moment setting in here at the old timers home. I don't even remember Bones being a Marlin.
October 12, 200717 yr I wonder if they'll look at Mazzone now that he was let go by the O's. He's got a history with Fredi from the Braves. Could be a fit.
October 21, 200717 yr The Marlins are expected to interview Wiley about their pitching coach vacancy after the World Series. Wiley, a Boca Raton resident, is a scout for Colorado. Wiley was Florida's pitching coach in 2005 when Willis had his best season, winning 22 games and finishing second in the Cy Young Award voting. --- "He's a great coach, a great motivator and he's honest,'' Willis said Thursday during a conference call to publicize a charity event he is hosting this weekend. "I've been very blessed to be around a lot of honest people because I like people to shoot from the hip. If I'm terrible, just tell me and we'll work from there. He's been the same (way). It's not a knock on Krannie. The Marlins decided to make a move. But Wiley is great.'' Palm Beach Post
