League worried about Marlins' OB site

ORLANDO -- The Orange Bowl site is not the best option for a new Marlins ballpark, a top executive with Major League Baseball said Tuesday. But it will have to do if the team wants to build a proposed 37,000-seat, retractable-roof stadium in South Florida.

''The [financial projections] would suggest that the Orange Bowl site would not necessarily generate as much as downtown,'' said Bob DuPuy, president and chief executive officer of MLB. ``We hope we're wrong. We all hope that the Orange Bowl site will be every bit as good as downtown. But there are concerns about it.''

Miami city leaders were told last month that the Marlins planned to trim their contribution to any stadium built on the Orange Bowl site, which became available when the University of Miami announced plans to leave.

The Marlins always have preferred a downtown Miami site for a new ballpark.

But DuPuy said the team has ''accepted the Orange Bowl site'' and discussions are continuing to work on a plan to finance construction.

''Believe me, nothing has ever been in concrete,'' said DuPuy, who is attending the annual general managers' meeting. ``This has been a lava light in terms of trying to put the financing together.''

He said he has had ''a number of talks'' during the past week with Miami-Dade County manager George Burgess, as well as other government officials.

''We have discussed several concepts over the course of the last month or so, and we're going to continue to do that,'' DuPuy said. ``The commissioner, this is very high on his radar screen right now.''

But DuPuy said there are no plans to set a deadline for any deal to get done.

''The commissioner refuses to give up. I refuse to give up,'' DuPuy said. ``At some point, though, maybe someone will say for as hard as we've tried, as long as we've tried, it's not going to happen. But we're not ready to concede that yet.''

That quote stuck with me as well this is crazy a site that was acceptable is now no longer acceptable , if Loria doesnt like the Orange Bowl now than maybe he should buy the land in the area he desires. The sense of entitlement is amazing you gut the payroll , alienate the fan base , back away from the agreed upon site , make very little in actual contribution , yes rent is nice but Loria will not own the team for 30 years so spare me the bull shi? the marlins are contributing alot of money , and now you want a prime real estate given too you .................. :banghead

This is bad. Really bad. I have lost what little faith I had left. I'm officially in full panic mode. The Marlins are gone. They will not be in Miami. Someone needs to slap me. I'll really losing it right now

san antonio its time to officially meet the marlins...or portland or vegas or [insert city that actually wants to build a stadium here]

Um...as far as I can tell, nothing in this article is new. They say they continue to talk. Nothing has changed here.

Come on the writing is on the wall. All the negativity is coming out about the sight, Cabrera and D-Train are one the way out. This smells like Montreal all over again. And wow looks who's in the drivers seat, Loria. As much as I hope I'm wrong, I really don't see this team staying in Miami. Maybe they'll move them or contract them. In 10 years we'll get some big spender that wants to bring baseball back to Miami and we'll be granted a new franchise. Under these conditions I really can't see things working out. It sucks

It'd be nice if MLB puts some money towards it. Those rich bastards!

Probably because they feel the Marlins should contribute the tens of millions they have been pocketing

i think the marlins would try and be moved first rather than contracted...bud doesnt seem that big of a fan of contraction

i would wonder with DS lease running out in '10 then if they actually got a deal to build the thing...then they might try a tactic that was used for the nationals stadium of design/build...in that building certain sections of the stadium while other sections are still on the drawing board...its a little stressful but quicker than traditional methods

:thumbup This stadium situation is just getting pathetic... as much as in pains me to say this, it really is getting close to time to just cut our losses and look for somewhere that actually wants a team and is willing to put forth the effort in making one succeed.

As Retro_Marlins said, MLB is right on, this site is just god-awful. I really can't understand everyone saying "let this team contract or leave and we'll get an owner that is actually committed." Just ridiculous. The owners ARE committed, but committed to doing this thing right. Building at OB is a guaranteed failure. The city/county are being blatantly irresponsible trying to throw money at a doomed project. When you're talking hundreds of millions of dollars, do it right, build it downtown where it will succeed.

It is orange bowl or nothing given the time constraints , Loria's limited resources , the orange bowl is the only feasible site . Anyone who wants this team to move or contract is stupid because mlb if the Marlins leave aren't coming back to Florida for a LONG LONG time if at all

It's unofficial MLB policy not to or force any of their franchises to. Their position is that there's just 30 of us and dozens of you so you fight over who is going to pay us to join you.

Guys, this is the negotiations...boo-hoo..MLB doesnt lie the site (but will accept it)...the team will pay less (but will still give money)....the league is worried (but not giving up).

Am I missing something? What's the bad news? The fact that they picked a site and it's acceptable OR are giving money OR not ready to give up?

Thigs are bad when the talking stops and no one has anything to say. When the chatter is up....its all part of negotiations.

The bad news is that cheapazz Loria is even trying to renegotiate and is trying to renege on his previous proposed contribution to the staduim financing. That just stinks and could unravel all the workings of the staduim proposal already made by the ciity of miami

I doubt MLB comes back here at all. It's not South Florida has actually supported the team. I can't understand why most are opposed to seeing them moved. As a whole South Florida residents just watch them on Tv anyways. What's the difference where the broadcasts originate?

I agree that MLB wouldn't come back, at least not for 30 years like in washington. I'm pretty sure the team wouldn't be on tv if they moved, wouldn't the devil rays (ick) become the local tv team?
