November 13, 200718 yr Why would the Marlins want Mike Maroth? I rather resign Byung Hung Kim or sign a Kris Benson/ Matt Clement type than a Mike Maroth. If the Marlins do sign Maroth for a contract worth more than $1 million, I am going to puke.
November 13, 200718 yr Look at what Colleti just did tonight "claiming Esteban Loaiza off waivers. Loaiza, who turns 36 on New Year's Eve, will make $7 million next season." Think things are getting a little out of hand? Loaiza happened in August? He pitched 22 innings for them in 2007? Confused? Oops. I cut and pasted something incorrectly...my bad.
November 13, 200718 yr Now I could live with Barrett at catcher Would take him over Tore. anyday! If Barrett were to sign a deal worth 1 million, then yeah...I would take him over Yorvit, since we could get the same production (and potentially much more offensively) with and he could come much cheaper. The only issue is whether or not the Padres offer him arbitration. If they do, I don't think he would be worth a 1st or 2nd rd pick. Mike Maroth...I really really hope we stay as far away from this guy as possible. Kris Benson, Matt Clement, Josh Fogg, Joe Kennedy, Chin-Hui Tsao, Byung-Hyuun Kim, Eric Milton, Brett Tomko, Randy Wolf, Tony Armas, Shawn Chacon...anyone but Maroth. Hell I would prefer Kip Wells, who also had a dismal season...but has been much better than Mike Maroth in his career. Anyone but Mike Maroth. If we want quality pitching, we won't find it in Mike Maroth. If you want a lefty, try Joe Kennedy, or Randy Wolf. Just not Mike Maroth.

I was a little confused by your post.

November 14, 200718 yr I'm down with this one. .212 on the road, keep doin' what you're doing Omar. And think of all the bloodshed it saves here
November 14, 200718 yr Isn't Barrett pretty weak defensively and not very good at handling pitchers? I'd hate to give him or Torrealba any kind decent money.
November 14, 200718 yr I'm down with this one. .212 on the road, keep doin' what you're doing Omar. And think of all the bloodshed it saves here Ain't that the truth. I was digging in for a full scale Civil War. I really think Omar might have saved a huge chunk of the Marlins' fan base.
November 14, 200718 yr I don't know why some would want Michael Barrett. He clashed with pitchers in Chicago and did the same in San Diego. His bat has been very meh for a couple seasons now. It won't be able to make up for him defensive miscues. I'd rather go with EP's plan of platooning Baker and Treanor.
November 14, 200718 yr I'd rather go with EP's plan of platooning Baker and Treanor. :| Lets not kill our team next season.I'd much rather prefer we sign Barrett or LoDuca.
November 14, 200718 yr Isn't Barrett pretty weak defensively and not very good at handling pitchers? Yes. He has the same problems catching the ball that Olivio does, doesn't have an arm and has a terrible reputation for working with pitchers. Piniella wanted him gone (it was more than just the fight with Big Z) and got his way, even though Barrett was Hendry's 'guy.' If you are looking to upgrade the catcher position defensively, Barrett is definitely not your man. And his offensive performance last year was also some cause for concern.
November 14, 200718 yr I'd rather go with EP's plan of platooning Baker and Treanor. :| Lets not kill our team next season.I'd much rather prefer we sign Barrett or LoDuca. I honestly believe Treanor is better than any FA catcher. And that's under the assumption he goes back to a .235 .BAA hitter with a SLG lower than his OBP. He has a better eye (on base more even though LoDuca has a better AVG) and arm and push power against LoDuca. And while Barrett has more power, Treanor gets on base more and is light years ahead of him in every aspect defensively. And again, this is assuming he's a .235 AVG hitter. What if he repeat last year and is a .270 hitter with a .750 OPS, while playing good defense? Oh, AND HE MAKES THE F*CKING MINIMUM (Well, atleast will be close to it. No way he gets more than 500k in his first year of arbitration). Makes me f***ing sick that the Marlins want to get Torrealba regardless of the cost but then cry cheap in other aspects. Then there's Baker who has a combined line of .297/.370/.442/.812 the past two years in triple A against RHP, walking a nice 10.1% of the time. But no, we have to spend 17% of our payroll on a sh*tty catcher (assuming we pay 5m and keep 30m payroll). Yeah, GENIOUS idea. f***.
November 14, 200718 yr It's hard to argue that looking at 1) who's available and 2) what the cost is for signing anyone better than Miguel Olivo, that a tandem of Treanor and Baker isn't at least a good Plan B, if not the right way to go for a year. The only caveat being we don't know who will be available in Rule 5 but I'm putting that aside for the moment. In the alternative could Olivo be worth 80% of what he signed for last season, or $1.6 million, to see if they can either work with him in the off-season, and/or fix him in spring training, the thinking being if the can't they have Plan B which costs almost nothing, and can trade/waive/cut Olivo before spring training is over and eat the $1.6 or some piece of it, rather than spending $3-5 million signing some of the other, especially aging, names who have as much likelihood at this point in their careers of being injured at some time in the season and having to go to Plan B anyways. Put another way. Is it worth risking $1.6 million to see if you can get 2006 performance out of the 2008 Olivo? This is just hypothetical, there is no right answer here btw. Putting all the personality and positional stuff here aside, I would think generally the Marlins were at least satisfied with what the got out Olivo ***in 2006*** and most, some people here as well. It's just a passing thought. (Now a question for Ramp - has Olivo burned any bridges with the Marlins FO, mgr or teammates that would preclude him coming back if performance or $$ were not an issue? If you know)
November 15, 200718 yr Just read on ESPN that that Torrealba and the Mets agreed on a 3 yr 15 mill deal. Thank you Omar.
