March 21, 200818 yr Castillo put on waivers, awaits his fate Third baseman was battling for starting spot at hot corner By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Jose Castillo would prefer to remain with the Marlins, but the 27-year-old third baseman knows the decision is out of his hands. Castillo's status is up in the air after the Marlins placed him on waivers on Thursday. But just because a player is placed on waivers doesn't mean he automatically will leave the team. There is a 72-hour window where a player placed on waivers can be claimed by another team or clear waivers. Even if he is claimed by another team, the Marlins could opt to pull him off waivers, and retain him. After spending the previous four years with the Pirates, Castillo signed as a free agent for $650,000 with the Marlins on Dec. 24, 2007. The Venezuelan native was brought in to compete for the starting third base job vacated after Miguel Cabrera was traded to the Tigers. He has been battling with Jorge Cantu, who entered Friday leading the National League in hits (22) in Spring Training. Dallas McPherson was initially in the hunt for the starting job, but he's been hampered by injuries and is expected to open the year at Triple-A Albuquerque. Castillo got off to a slow start at the plate, but has since picked things up and was batting .283 entering Friday, when he was in the starting lineup against the Astros. "I'm a little surprised; I know before I wasn't hitting good," Castillo said on Friday morning. "I'm surprised that I was put on waivers. I don't know what my situation is right now. I'm working hard. I want to stay here." If for some reason Castillo isn't with the Marlins or another MLB club when the season begins, he may have an option to play in Japan. "Before I signed with the Marlins, two teams from Japan, I don't know their names, they called me and asked if I would play for them," Castillo said. "I'm 27 now. They have good players there, but I'm waiting for [the Marlins'] decision." The Marlins are not commenting on Castillo's waiver status, or even confirming he is on waivers. Manager Fredi Gonzalez spoke generally about Castillo's performance. "He's done a terrific job; he's a terrific defender," Gonzalez said. "He's made some [nice] plays at third base. He's swinging the bat OK." The Marlins are looking to improve defensively, and Castillo has been a standout in the field at third. "I'm happy here," he said. "I'm working hard on my defense. Before, I wasn't hitting. I'm waiting for the decision, whatever they say." http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/articl...sp&c_id=fla

March 21, 200818 yr Castillo put on waivers, awaits his fate Third baseman was battling for starting spot at hot corner By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com ... The Marlins are not commenting on Castillo's waiver status, or even confirming he is on waivers. ... http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/articl...sp&c_id=fla This confuses me. If the Marlins aren't even saying he is on waivers, then who is he getting this from?
March 21, 200818 yr this has to be preceding another move...has to be...it just doesnt make sense any other way
March 21, 200818 yr he's on waivers likely to make room for Cantu on the 40 man http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/team/roster...an.jsp?c_id=fla
March 21, 200818 yr i dont know how he can be on waivers and be playing today though? doesnt that seem strange to anyone else? on a side note...the marlins are kickin roy oswalt's ass today...4-0 so far
March 21, 200818 yr what a great inning and even castillo with a hit and a run...thats weird , why is he still playing if he has been waived?
March 21, 200818 yr Jose Cruz just hit a 2run homerun off Miller...4-2 Marlins Reggie scored on the homer after getting a single to lead it off.....lol

March 21, 200818 yr A few thoughts: 1. he's still not listed even on the MLB website has having been waived @ almost 3pm today. 2. the marlins may be shopping him to get their $650,000 back in $$$ or talent. 3. McPherson (on the 40 man) has options and signed a split contract so you don't need to waive Castillo to make room for Cantu on the roster. 4. Jimmy might be right it's a prelude to something except, usually you don't want to take a chance on a guy you're going to trade to be injured by playing him. 5. He's staying and this whole thing is a technical player movement chess move that Frisaro doesn't get or doesn't want to get because it makes him look foolish after yesterday's column. 6. What does Ross' injury mean in the scheme of things? (the domino effect scenario) 7. I went back and read this a couple of times and Frisaro's tone is much different than yesterday. Yesterday's was not let the door hit you in the butt on the way out, today is replete with quotes from the player and manager about wanting to stay and his good defense.
March 21, 200818 yr If they signed him for $650, what were they looking for that they didn't get from him? He pretty much came exactly as advertised. Solid defense, not much bat. Maybe they figured Cantu wouldn't make the roster.... but still I'd be hesitant to make a decision based solely on a couple weeks of spring training stats. Especially when money is so tight and they've got a half mill+ invested in him. As you said '03, they're probably hoping to get that back, but I'm still not sure what else they expected from him.

March 21, 200818 yr yeah...the stros radio guys didnt say much about it...but ross tweaked a hammy most likely correct? and if this article does have merit...i see it preceding a move...but i still dont understand why castillo was playing today unless there was a specific team scouting him today or maybe even the astros themselves if it doesnt...frisaro is wayyyyy off and me thinks castillo wont be giving him any interviews anytime soon
March 21, 200818 yr news is Ross had to be helped off the field. i'm guessing it makes it more likely Maybin stays
March 21, 200818 yr news is Ross had to be helped off the field. i'm guessing it makes it more likely Maybin stays ross could be a fantastic player if he ever managed to stay healthy
March 21, 200818 yr If in fact the Marlins put him on waivers yesterday the waiver period will run out sometime Tuesday as waivers are three business days. It should be noted that neither the Marlins or MLB site have him listed as being on waivers under transactions.

It should be noted that neither the Marlins or MLB site have him listed as being on waivers under transactions. I don't think this kind of "waivers" is ever really recorded in the transaction log. Unless someone is being put on waivers "For the purpose of giving him his unconditional release," that is. Around trade deadline time, players like Manny Ramirez, and sometimes entire rosters are placed on waivers to see if there is interest, and those are never in the transaction logs either.
March 21, 200818 yr news is Ross had to be helped off the field. i'm guessing it makes it more likely Maybin stays I hope not. He just dosen't look ready yet. I would hate to put a dampner on his confidence by having him here too soon. But I'm not a coach and I don't see him every day.

You know, it looks like you're right. All the transactions are "reassigned" "transfered" "outrighted" etc. there are no waivers listed. You learn something new every day :thumbup
March 21, 200818 yr not only does the move not make sense..... and castillo better not get claimed....... but coupled with cody's injury this pisses me off
March 21, 200818 yr Castillo was at todays game, and did play but he has in fact been placed on waivers. I'm sure it is a money thing as he has options and can be sent to the minors. The Marlins are being hush hush about this and I understand not very happy about the fact that the news of his release go out there so quickly.
