most of you probably remember when joe girardi banned facial hair for the marlins and a bunch of people were less than happy with that. now, he's banning his yankees players from eating candy and gum.

 

This is a photograph of an ice cream freezer outside the visitors clubhouse at Camden Yards wrapped up in a blanket so nobody will steal the treats inside.

 

Why is it outside the visitors clubhouse?

 

Because Joe Girardi wants it that way. The Yankees contacted the visiting clubhouse manager of every stadium where they play and asked that the candy and ice cream be removed before the team comes to town.

 

All clubhouses have an assortment of candy, gum, sunflower seeds, ice cream and other goodies. Personally, it never has made sense to me. Why would you provide professional athletes with junk food?

 

The players, of course, aren’t too pleased. They’re used to M&Ms and Snickers bars.

 

The clubhouse in Tampa Bay replaced all the candy with nuts, dried fruit and granola. It was hilarious to watch as guys smuggled in candy bars and ate them furtively at their lockers.

So stupid. The players must feel like their in middle school again sneaking in candy and eating it before the teacher/manager sees them.

Girardi is a decent manager but he sure loves making stupid pointless rules.

I have no problem with that. you run your own ship, there are plenty other alternatives than to eat candy. specially as a professional sportsman.

but why get rid of Gum? chocolate bars are one thing, but a Bazooka Joe or a dubble bubble? come on.

I know whats next, Joe doesnt like stepping on sunflower shells in the dugout and bans them too.

THIS ISN'T A CANDY STORE

 

Joe Girardi caused a stir when he banned candy and ice cream from the Yankees clubhouse. But the truth of the matter is, many teams, including the Marlins, don't allow sweets in their clubhouses.

 

The reason: It's bad nutrition.

 

The only candy found in the Marlins clubhouse is Mike and Ike's, which don't contain any fat. But forget about chocolate bars and peanut-butter cups.

Personally I thought the no-facial hair policy was great.

 

 

Take one look at Eric Gagne and tell me that dude doesnt need a razor ASAP.

 

 

 

The candy thing? He's not saying they can't have candy. He's saying they can't have candy in THE CLUBHOUSE.

 

They are professional atheletes. No biggie if they can't have candy while at work.

Whatever Girardi has done has worked in the past. So let the man put in the rules he wants.
