Tank to AAA

We need to take a look at McPherson. He has hit 19 HR in the minors and he can play 3rd better than Cantu, who could then be used as a spot starter and pinch hitter.

im not sure while you guys are saying burke will stay afgter his outing tonight. he was horrible. he cant throw strikes. he doesnt know how to finish off hitters. he walks to many. and is just not major league ready

This is not about Badenhop per se, but I have been wondering for weeks if the organization made the right personnel move in hiring Mark Wiley for a second go-around with the Fish?

I see pitchers collectively and individually making the same mistakes over and over. Yes I understand the coach is not out throwing the ball but I ask whatever happened to their early 2008 mantra about first pitch strikes? Why do so many have so much trouble getting that third out after getting two with ease? Guys with sinker balls and other breaking pitches should be pitching to contact much more than they are. That phrase "pitching to contact" is not some new term, it has been part of the game's lexicon for at least one decade and maybe two. And of course there's the walks issue.

I do wonder. I wonder whether like in 2003 when we jettisoned one manager for acquire another, it might be time for a change? Wiley has had his share of successes this season but I would question if overall the FO, with two months under their collective belts maybe think they should have looked harder at an open field of candidates rather than handing the guy for all intents and purposes the job in mid-2007.

The fly in the ointment, real or imagined, is that pitchers especially, have a unique relationship with their coach and any re-evaluation that may lead to changing horses will probably have to wait until the off-season. But so far I would give Wiley a C- for his inability to train his staff to do the three things he himself said were important as the season began.

I know hes not gonna be the guy that they call up but if maybin continues his hot streak maybe the call him up in a couple of weeks, this team needs some kind of spark

I agree the team needs some sort of jump start but I still dont think Maybin should be brought up this year at all.

Ok... before I do this, first of all... I don't advocate bringing up Maybin, yet... BUT, this is more about how to effectively use stats, vis a vis how I did re: John Baker yesterday... using the full thing at this point in the season isn't that useful...

Maybin in April:

89 ABs, 19 BB, 37 K ... .225/.367/0.371... 32 Groundballs, 4 Liners, 12 Flies

Maybin in May

106 ABs, 12 BB, 35 K, .274/.350/.453 ... 31 Groundballs, 11 Liners, 23 Flies

Dude's been progressively getting better, and he's been cutting down on the strikeouts, just like I've said... right now he's really doing a heck of a job of learning the strike zone, and learning breaking balls. He's not just going up there and playing, he's got a plan, with the help of the organization. I have no idea WHEN, but one day, Cam is gonna wake up and put it all together, this is just indicative of the learning curve.

I agree with this because the reason you send someone down to the minors is for him to improve his game which is what cameron is doing, and if he continues this it should only be a matter of time till he gets called up.

While I do say all that about Maybin's stats...

I acknowledge A) It could be the result of "Small Sample Size Alert" and that B) I REALLY want to see sustained success... call me crazy though, but I predict Cam bats .300 this month

Thank god. Tank was pretty bad this year.

he wasnt great last year , he is not the pitcher he was in 2006 . I am not sure why

Girardi leaving him in too long way too many times.

Girardi is another bum

I think Tank needs to be given a chance, still.

Last year, he came back, and had a 1.48 ERA in about 22 innings.

I know it sounds hypocritical, after my comments on Gregg, and all, but I will always give young guys, who I see, as a part of the future on this team, a 'better chance.' Pinto and Tankersley are 2 guys (2 lefties) who are young, and are capable. How many bullpens have 2 young lefties who have proven they can pitch at a really good level? 2 more guys I like are Lindstrom and Kensing.

A year or 2 from now, I see a bullpen like:

Lindstrom (CL), Pinto, Kensing, Tank, Martinez, Owens, and (long reliever).

Until Lindstrom refines his secondary pitches he will just be a tease. His fastball doesn't have a lot of movement either. I don't think you can just anoint him the successor at closer.

well, that's what pitching coaches are for. I still believe Lindstrom could dominate if he would use his breaking ball more. Somebody has to get it in his head. The breaking ball isn't bad, either. He's shown he can throw it for strikes...he just doesn't use it.

If Willie Randolf is fired, it seems Rick Peterson will be gone too...and I really hope we jump on him.

Leo Mazzone is still out there too...

Part of the problem is that Tank is used primarily against lefties but he's getting hammered by them whereas righties are batting .214 against him. I think he's been misused. Interestingly in college he was a reliever his first three years and was ok, but it wasn't until his senior year when he was a starter and became the ace of the Alabama staff, that scouts began to notice him. He's not a conventional left handed pitcher. I don't think they are going to turn him into a lefty specialist.
