June 5, 200818 yr I got home too late to see the Marlins pick on ESPN2....what did the talking heads say about the Skipworth pick? Exactly what you would expect: Power to all fields, should fill out and add power, comp. to Joe Mauer...blah blah blah.
June 5, 200818 yr HORRIBLE. I'm going to puke. God dammit Beinfest. What the hell are you doing. Yeah, ok. This makes sense...lets just call an 18 year old prospect a bust. Have you ever even watched him play?
June 5, 200818 yr I got home too late to see the Marlins pick on ESPN2....what did the talking heads say about the Skipworth pick? at best you've got a very good catcher, at worst he's moved to either firstbase or a corner outfield, but either way they expect him to be a star.
June 5, 200818 yr I got home too late to see the Marlins pick on ESPN2....what did the talking heads say about the Skipworth pick? -They said he'll be just as good as Posey...but he's younger, so it will take some more time. -They compared his swing to Joe Mauer...and they said he will have more power than Mauer.
June 5, 200818 yr let's remember, Skipworth was also named the Gatoraid Player of the Year so it's not like he's a scrub. Honestly, some of you are acting like we just reached for a player, he was considered a top 10 prospect, and some also say he's the best catcher. Posey's more developed defensively and is faster, otherwise Skipworth is better offensively
June 5, 200818 yr HORRIBLE. I'm going to puke. God dammit Beinfest. What the hell are you doing. Yeah, ok. This makes sense...lets just call an 18 year old prospect a bust. Have you ever even watched him play? I'm posting this again because you missed it. There is such a low probability he turns into an average major leaguer because of his age and POSITION, the Marlins should have taken a college prospect who is safer. Especially because we are a low budget franchise and we can't afford to miss on players. Look, I hope he is great, but the juice isn't worth the squeeze at 6. It's completely disheartening that we were one slot away from Posey.
June 5, 200818 yr HORRIBLE. I'm going to puke. God dammit Beinfest. What the hell are you doing. LOL... I love when people freak out over taking players they have never seen play...except for maybe a grainy scout video. LOL. There is such a low probability he turns into an average major leaguer because of his age and POSITION, the Marlins should have taken a college prospect who is safer. Especially because we are a low budget franchise and we can't afford to miss on players. This is always my contention. We have to draft smart because its not by far certain Maybin & Miller will be worthy of prospects in a couple of years. Beinfest cannot afford to miss in the draft anymore. His record is spotty at best in the draft. Now if you talk about trading prospects for prospects, yes that he does pretty good at, but his drafts are quite questionable.
June 5, 200818 yr The reason why Marlin Fans are mad is because they dont wanna wait 3-4 for him to come. But I always wanted a Joe Mauer type of player so, im fine with this pick,

Next up for us: Pick 52. :mis2

There is such a low probability he turns into an average major leaguer because of his age and POSITION, the Marlins should have taken a college prospect who is safer. Especially because we are a low budget franchise and we can't afford to miss on players. OK, but there is risk with ANY of these picks. No offense, but i'll trust Beinfest and company over your opinion on this. The only thing you have against him is his age and position, which doesn't seem like a fair criticism considering you have never seen the kid play! Besides, considering the budget and our small margin of error, don't you think they did a lot of homework on this kid? It's not as if they are the only people that thought Skipworth was a really good prospect. According to the "experts" this is hardly a reach.
June 5, 200818 yr The reason why Marlin Fans are mad is because they dont wanna wait 3-4 for him to come. But I always wanted a Joe Mauer type of player so, im fine with this pick, It has nothing to do with that. If he was a completely safer projectable player like Beckham or Hosmer, sure. I can wait 4 years if I know what I'm getting. Hermida, Dominguez, and Stanton were great picks. This kid is not because of his position. The Marlins rolled the dice big time, and let's hope it pans out. I don't think you guys realize, we still have no catcher in the organization that can play for the MLB for the next 4-5 years. That is a big deal, and taking Crow would have padded the SP depth where we could have moved one for a serious catcher.
June 5, 200818 yr Either way i know we can all say we hope he pans out and if he does, OMG we are gonna be crazy good when our new stadium opens

It happens quite often in the minors...1B or LF. Jacobs and Willingham aren't really here LONG-term. By the time Skipworth should be ready, Hammer will be 4 years older, with a bad back, and Jacobs should be about 32, 33 years old, by then. So I still don't see a problem. As of now, the kid is still a catcher. Bottom line is, he can hit.
June 5, 200818 yr Either way i know we can all say we hope he pans out and if he does, OMG we are gonna be crazy good when our new stadium opens Well unless this guy zips through our system, he won't be ready by 2011, but more like 2012 or 2013.

June 5, 200818 yr What are you guys looking for with the 52nd pick? Any really good pitchers out there, who could be in that spot, when we pick? I personally don't know much after the Top 10.
June 5, 200818 yr many think he'll go through the system quickly, I think it all depends on how good he actually is defensively.
June 5, 200818 yr Here is the take from John Manuel on the BA Blog: Skip To My Lou Posted Jun. 5, 2008 1:46 pm by John Manuel Filed under: Draft Day Matt Blood and I love this pick: Kyle Skipworth to the Marlins. In our last podcast that wasn?t a college behemoth podcast, we both agreed that Skipworth can be the highest-ceiling player in this draft. He?s a lefthanded-hitting catcher who can just flat hit, and he has arm strength and improved catch-and-throw skills. Frankly, this pick rocks. The Marlins need catching, Skipworth has an advanced bat and can be a premium player at a premium position. Now the Reds can go get Gordon Beckham and everything can keep proceeding according to Matt?s plan.
June 5, 200818 yr Author When they say he might gow through our system quickly... how quickly do they mean? Like 3-4 years?
June 5, 200818 yr When they say he might gow through our system quickly... how quickly do they mean? Like 3-4 years? Usually 4 years, but sometime HS players take longer, maybe as many as 6 years.
