June 12, 200818 yr The great Kevin Gregg is at it again with another blown save. If it wasn't for Gregg we would still be in first place (I believe he's blown 3 saves and we're currently 3 games out). Yes, Gregg has a great E.R.A but he's a f'ing piece of sh*t! I never trusted this guy since day one, and he has yet to show me anything, he f'ing sucks.
June 12, 200818 yr Author You can't come out in the ninth with a one run lead and walk the lead off hitter. He does this a lot.
June 12, 200818 yr Gregg melts under pressure yet again. I'm sick of it. I never trust him to close the game with a one-run lead.
June 12, 200818 yr For my birthday (which is Sunday) all I want is for Kevin Gregg to get a new pair of prescription glasses. B/c when you have good stuff, it's disheartening, that you ALWAYS come in...and walk, at least, 1 batter, every fucccckking outing.
June 12, 200818 yr While I agree Gregg is to blame, you have to give it to him that he ended up pitting in the game ending DP and Hanley messed it up.
June 12, 200818 yr It wasn't a terrible inning by Gregg at all. The leadoff single was a ground ball, just barely found a hole. Walk to Rollins wasn't good, granted. The steal of 3rd was on Helms. Then Gregg induces a double-play ground ball that Hanley can't turn. Then after hitting a guy, he makes a nice bare-handed play on the bunt to escape the jam. I'm not thrilled with him as the closer, but that's a pretty good lineup over there.
June 12, 200818 yr While I agree Gregg is to blame, you have to give it to him that he ended up pitting in the game ending DP and Hanley messed it up. I think Uggla's flip didn't really help. Utley has above average speed; I'm not even sure if we get Utley there, even if Hanley does get it out of his glove. I'm more upset with Gregg. When hitters are batting less than .200 off of you, it shows that you have good stuff. However, Gregg can't be walking batters like this, at a consistent rate, and that's why I often get frustrated, at times, with him.

June 12, 200818 yr why don't they put pinto or joe nelson to close...i trust these guys even badenhop more than gregg. everytime i see gregg in to save the game i get nervous lol
June 12, 200818 yr why don't they put pinto or joe nelson to close...i trust these guys even badenhop more than gregg. everytime i see gregg in to save the game i get nervous lol I don't think Pinto would do well in the closer's role. He like Gregg, has been tough to hit, but his control issues are worse than Gregg's, plus Pinto is more valuable as a middle reliever, imo. Not sure how Nelson would do. Badenhop isn't a closer, lol.
June 12, 200818 yr To me a blind pitcher is not closer material. I would assume that's common sense. A walk, and a hit batter in the same inning?! Gregg?s 4th blown save of the season, and he gets the win over Miller who shut down the Philli powerhouse offense. Thats just sad...
June 12, 200818 yr erick i know the hopper isn't a closer, lol. What I meant was that i rather put any relief pitcher over gregg if you get me .

OK, then do Fredi's job for a moment. Who would you put in? Let me help. So far, in our pen, you don't want Gregg, Pinto, Nelson, or Badenhop. That leaves: Waechter, who's has a 3.79 ERA since May 13th. He doesn't put many men on base but gets hit to .292 with RISP. Plus, with our starters, it's great having him as a LR. Miller, with a WHIP of 1.387 and a 4.07 ERA. Kensing, with a WHIP of 1.452, which is enough said. Lindstrom, who's WHIP is 1.765...double enough said. Go ahead, pick.

Ummm...well, I didn't state that I would rather "have anyone" over Gregg. That was Ernesto. Listen, Gregg is the best one suited for the job RIGHT NOW...he's the closer, and his #'s compared to the other guys tell us why. Do I like that he's our closer? No. Do I want him traded this offseason? Yes. I still believe that Matt Lindstrom will come around SOMETIME (when he decides that mixing in a breaking ball once or twice, consistently, might help)...I just don't think NOW would be the appropriate time to do this. At the end of the day, the closer of the future, imo, is in the starting rotation, right now. His name is Ryan Tucker. In 2 or 3 years when Miller, Volstad, etc., etc., should be established ML pitchers, I see Ryan Tucker becoming the closer. I've said this in multiple threads, already.
June 12, 200818 yr For the record, his WHIP is a hige...gigantic...towering...ugly...horrible.... 1.137. While it's not great, it's not terrible either. And it is most definatly not the WHIP of a "f'ing piece of sh*t"

Well, Erick, you talk terrible about Gregg (even though you said he was an All-Star when his WHIP and ERA were higher than they are now), so I assumed you wanted him demoted from closer. My biggest problem is that he is taking way too much heat for someone pitching as well as he is.

My biggest problem is that he is taking way too much heat for someone pitching as well as he is. I think you're putting a lot into my "All-Star" comment. The closers this year representing the NL at the All-Star Game, aren't having special years, nor do they compare to the closers in the AL. ...and my only problem with Gregg is...the walks. He has the stuff to basically do VERY WELL (check the opp. avg./.OPS), but he's only asking for trouble with his control issues. When you come into a game to save a 1 run lead, you can't be walking 1-2 batters, at a consistent rate. Sooner or later, it comes back to hurt you.
June 12, 200818 yr Not only is he walking guys, he's hitting guys and he's throwing wild pitches. The dude has some serious control problems and he needs to fix them. Now. I think if we're still in the race come the trade deadline, we need to trade a back of the bullpen guy--possibly even a closer to replace Gregg and have Gregg pitch the 8th.

I think if we're still in the race come the trade deadline, our glaring need would be a back of the bullpen guy--possibly even a closer to replace Gregg. I think an experienced starter would be nicer to have, to be honest. And by experienced, I don't mean Mark Hendrickson. Gregg might be struggling (he's not anything special), but he's not a BIG weakness.

What scares me is our entire defense blowing saves in September.
