July 14, 200817 yr By long term, I mean at least 5 years. Hanley already signed one this season, and now I think it is Nolasco's time. He has proven he can be one of the Marlin's top pitchers for years to come, if not the Marlins ace. He has improved each year, and he was close to making the all-star team this season. By the start of next season, he will be 26 years old, which means if we sign him to a 5 year deal, he will still only be 30 years old when his contract expires. He would still have some of his prime left in him. If the Marlins signed their best hitter to a long term deal, why should'nt they do it with their best pitcher? What do you guys think?

U aren't serious? Uggla should be top priority for a multi-year contract. I don't care that we have coghlin in AA, Uggla is a proven all star, Nolasco can be a one year wonder, I wouldn't waste a 5 year contract on Nolasco

But Olsen is the more consistenly good pitcher, if any of our pitchers deserves a long term contract it has to be Scott Olsen, but this team is built on hitting, and to ensure a great hitting team for many years to come we need to sign Uggla long term.

In order to be contenders though, you need to have pitching and hitting. The Marlins are a good team this year, but I dont think they have a shot at going all the way. Im not saying Uggla should'nt be signed to long term contract, I just think Nolasco should first.
July 14, 200817 yr how about not wasting a long term deal and sign them both to 3 years 3 year contracts FTW

July 14, 200817 yr I would let both Uggla and Noly go to arbitration, honestly, and try to sign Uggs going into 2010.
July 14, 200817 yr No pitchers should get a long term deal. Uggla - meh. Maybe through his arb years, but that's it. And probably not even that.
July 14, 200817 yr I have never known but why do they call uggla cooley? who made it up? It's his middle name. Daniel Cooley Uggla.
July 14, 200817 yr Author oh damn are you serious cuz that is the coolest middle name i've ever heard Yes, its true.
July 14, 200817 yr Nobody has earned it yet. Nolasco is great, but we need to see him pitch like this over a full year. Maybe Uggla, but we have chris coglohan in the minors, so i doubt we sign him longterm.
July 14, 200817 yr With Hanley already locked up, I feel his double play partner deserves at least a deal that will buy out his first year of free agency. If he continues his production in the 2nd half he'll knock the payroll up to over $25 million next year.

With Hanley making $11 million more next year than this year it will be at least $33 million.

Depending on next year, we could have a real dilemma on our hands. On one had, Cohglan is supposed to be the 2b of the future and seems to be on pace to be just that. On the other hand, Uggla is getting better defensively, learning patience at the plate with his rising OBP rates, and is on pace to break the single season home run record for a 2nd baseman. He very well could go on to be one of the best slugging 2nd basemen in history. We could always move one to first or 3rd. Matt Domiguez is still a good ways away.
