Do you guys feel like a certain player on the '08 Marlins roster is underappreciated? Like underrated?

A guy, for example, you feel should be considered a part of our long-term plan, but is never considered? If so, please state why.

 

My pick: Renyel Pinto

Reason: Don't get me wrong, Renyel Pinto can be annoying when he has his control issues, at times, but there are positives.

Pinto is just real durable; the guy has saved the bullpen time and time again. He leads the league in games, and he's versatile (he can get tough lefties, and can go multiple innings, as well).

Renyel Pinto is a 26 year old LEFT-HANDED reliever, who can get BOTH lefties and righties out. Guys like that (at Pinto's age) are tough to find.

I too will go with Cody Ross. Why? Because I said so.

Dan Uggla would be another one. He's a 2-time all-star but people like Erick still want to trade him.

Solid Thread Erick, when I saw the topic title I knew I wanted to respond.

 

My Pick: Luis Gonzalez

Reason: Luis Gonzalez, World Series Champion, aging quickly just looking for a place to play when along came the Marlins.

The Marlins a team with incredible youth, just begging to have some sort of veteran presence, little did they know they would get it both in the clubhouse and on the field.

Luis Gonzalez is a tested veteran his pinch hits and occasional starts, have shown why he isn't one of the young ones on the Marlins.

Plate presence his patience should be looked at by every one of the Marlins and followed, he almost never dials up to hit one out on the first pitch and he doesn't swing for the fences if the ball goes out so be it. Although he has had some trouble in the outfield (legs, arms) both are old and diminished he has been able to hold his own.

In the clubhouse I can only imagine some of the pranks Luis offers upon some of the young Marlins players, something in the end that just yells "I am playing the game I love and I am enjoying myself!" Thanks Gonzo!

True. Gonzo and Helms have been nice pickups for the bench. Veteran presence, and some clutch hits, as well.

Just to add something here, I know I am going to sound like a total hypocrite but I take back what I said earlier about Dan Uggla being the player who needs to be signed to a multi-year contract, I love Uggla I really do but I think this time it needs to go to a pitcher. Just my 2 cents.

He hasn't complained about his lack of starts lately, knowing he's most valuable coming off the bench. He only has two homers this year, both of which were huge (vs. Mets in extras, vs. Nationals to put us ahead late). On top of all that he may be the most valuable locker room guy we have, almost setting the "have fun, but do work" attitude that defines this team. They don't call him amazing for nothing.

Players like Amezaga are rare, as well.

Out of utility players, I can only think of Chone Figgins (maybe Brandon Inge) who might be better.

 

What Fredo does for this team is very valuable, as well. And he's like the total opposite of every hitter we have. He does the intangible things to win ballgames.

 

...+ Amezaga might actually be our best defensive player at EVERY position. :lol

DAMN! But seriousley though, i pick cody ross. This year he has continually been clutch for the marlins. he stepped up when hanley ramirez went cold and when willingham went down with injury. He has played great defense all year and he is still 27 years old. He can easily be our starting LF next year when cameron maybin comes up. Oh and did anyone here sportscenter or BBTN talk about cody ross' 17 game hitting streak? I just wanna know because i havent heard anything

Scott Olsen

 

Reasoning: Scott Olsen has given us more chances to win than anyone else. While Nolasco has been pushed as our "ace", Scotty has been steadier. He has more starts of 7 innings or more (9 vs 7), has more quality starts (12 vs 11) and a higher percentage of quality starts (60% vs 58%). Scotty has only had 2 games with 5 or more earned runs, Nolasco has 4. Going into the 2nd half, all the talk has been about Nolasco, Johnson, Volstad, and even Anibal Sanchez. Everyone forgets about the steady, consistent Olsen.

 

So, for giving us more chances to win than anyone else and still being considered inferior, I nominated Scott Olsen for the most under-appreciated player on the team.

Im going with Cantu... almost up to .300 batting and has a chance for 30 HR 90 RBI season... can easily get overlooked when so many players on our team are hitting so many HRs.

I have a couple: Gonzo, Amezega, Olsen, Cantu, Hermida, Uggla, Helms...

 

If I had to pick just one, though, I'd have to say, with out a doubt in my mind, it's the Boss Cody Ross.

 

Reason: Well, lesse, 17 game hitting streak for one. Two, anybody remember those numbers he put up during our stay in Colorodo? (I know it's Coors field, but still). Three, this guy has stepped up BIG time in outfield. He just seems to always be able to get to the ball, even without lightning speed. Great positioning for a young player. Three, since he started becoming a regular, I've watched his numbers just skyrocket. His batting average jumped up some 50 points, his Hr numbers are still going up at a nice pace, and he has really had some INCREDIBLY clutch hits (two out two run homerun for the win, anybody?) and he's been the light in the dark in those last 3 spots in the lineup. I just fear pitchers are going to start realizing this isn't the guy you want to go after and start pitching around him, so I'm really hope shake n' Bake continues to hit, and force the pitchers to go after Ross. That, or Ross moves up in the line up (I would REALLY like to see that, let him take some of the spots of the guys struggling, like Willingham).

I don't see where any of the players you all have listed are either underappreciated or underrated by the team or the fans, which is what the thread is all about. The exceptions being Helms and Gonzo, which I don't see being on the team next year in a player's role.

Treanor. An excellent back up catcher that can give us alot of starts in case of injury. He isn't a full time starter but is adequetly filling that role because of a lack at that position again this year for the Fish. Not great, just adequet. He's far better in the back up role.

 

Or Joe Nelson. A 33 YO reliever that has pretty much been a career minor leaguer that stuck with his dream only to excel in a Marlins uniform this year. After a much unheralded call up, he has gone 24.1 IPs with 27 Ks, 9BBs and a 1.48 ERA. To me, he's the Rodney Dangerfield of our pitching staff.

When was the last time you saw a thread, or even a post, about how great Olsen has been for us?

As I said, I think this entire team is underapreciated. Lets not forget you are on a Marlins fan forum, so yeah, these guys are going to get a little bit more recognition here then normal. I mearly picked the guys who I thought were having incredible seasons for one reason or another, and who really haven't been recognized for it on a more national scale. I have no intent on picking a medocure player that gets absolutely no attention, from the National standpoint or from the fans, just because he may deserve a little bit of attention. I'm going to focus on the players playing great all around baseball or exceptional clutch baseball who should be in the national spotlight in Utley or Holliday fashion, but only get recognized by the Marlins fans, if that. Ross, to me, has the biggest gap right now between the level at which he is recognized, and where his recognition should be. I did miss Nelson, though, and I agree with that pick. He gets absolutely no recognition at all but is putting up some killer numbers.

Why? He has 6 wins, 20 saves and a 2.49 ERA. Other than a couple of bad games in Colorado he has only allowed 3 runs in June + July. And he showed great bouncebackability after Denver with 5 saves in the next week.

 

Yes he walks too many. Yes he makes things far too nerve-wracking at times. But more often that not he does his job and that is closing out games.

You and Rab both have legitimate points. But I don't see Nelson getting any love around here nor do I see him as having a mediocre season thus far. Seeing as this is an opinion thing, I'll stick to mine. No offense to either of you. Or the others that voiced their opinions.
