Does Dan Uggla have a longterm future with the Marlins?

Featured Replies

Simple Answer:No

Why: Chris Coghlen

that is all u need to know

There are no assurances that Coghlen ends up at 2b. I know the organization has him as our 2b of the future. However, he has 18 errors in the minors. Uggla has 6 in the majors and everyone sill knocks his defense. Coghlen will most likely hit and make it to the majors, but he could end up at another position.

i know, but the marlins FO will see Coghlen as another cheap minor leaguer with potential and will use him to replace the proven 2nd baseman looking for the big pay day.

Yeah, its not that I don't love Dan, but I really feel like we need to have a great second baseman to hide some of Hanley's deficiencies til he becomes more consistent. Everyone knows its all about being great up the middle, and even though we're way ahead of the curve offensively there, we're pretty weak defensively at short and second (Cody is awesome in center though, and Maybin's supposed to be great as well).

I can honestly see us being a better team with an awesome fielding second baseman maybe with some speed that could be a leadoff hitter or #2 hitter type. I'd love to see a second baseman good enough to lead off, and bump Hanley down to at least #2 in the order, opening up his RBI opportunities.

First of all, if you want to help Hanley defensively, you have to get him a better defensive first basemen to dig out his throws at first. The only way Uggla helps Hanley is when they turn double plays, and they actually do that pretty well.

Second of all, the only spots in the lineup that Hanley should hit are leadoff, third, or maybe even 4th. That's it. It would be a waste to have him hit second. You don't get more RBI's out the second spot in the lineup.

Third, if you plan on replacing him with Coughlan, you can forget about having an "awesome fielding" second basemen.

I think the Marlins should atleast give him a 4 year contract, buyout his arbitration and keep him from free agency. If he's still producingthe power numbers they could still deal him, if Coghlan or someone else shows they're ready.

I also agree that NO Marlin (with the exception of Hanley) has a longterm future with the Marlins

I really thought this day and thread would never come, but to be honest I think Uggla is replaceable he has slumped considerably since the all-star break and if you look at his BA from years past there is not alot to look at. Now Uggla is a fine player, and will never be forgotten if in fact he does move along to another team but right now I think it's just a matter of time before it happens.

Like people have said previous to my post, I really don't think he is worth the money that I thought he deserved earlier on.

With all that being said he is our best bet at 2B right now lets just see how he finishes up before making any big moves with him.

It might worth noting that Coghlan is an awfully raw 2nd baseman with 17 errors, three times as many as Dan, and projects to almost 30 over an average MLB season. And he's no Robert Andino whose high error count in AAA was because he refused to accept that there were any limits on his range and went far afield to make any play he could regardless of how it affected his stats. So if people think Dan is a mediocre 2nd baseman be warned, the kid is much worse.

And then there's Coghlan's hollow bat, which depending on what MLE you use projects out to a .250-ish hitter with no power and no production and his strikeouts go way up. But he is young so that fits in with the mentality here, you know if you're thirty you're over the hill. I laugh about it (and I do laugh about it, but not at you) because honestly I remember being the same way, thinking the same way - in my youth "Don't Trust Anyone Over 30" was the Yippie national anthem and the mantra for a whole generation.

Coghlan may very well have a long and productive future in the major leagues but he needs a lot more seasoning and to get some production from his bat and most importantly learn how to play his position professionally before he replaces anyone, whether it's Dan Uggla or anyone else. Hopefully he goes to the AFL for some fine-tuning, or is used for trade bait if the FO is making a run this year because he has a lot of value.

This.

Keep Uggla! He is a man, whose named Dan, and he can, carry our offense, for quite a span. Unlike error-filled, weak batted, Christopher Coghlan.

There are other players that can go before we throw out the second most productive second baseman in baseball.

every 1 wants dan but the FO might not want him if they could deal him or if he wants a sh*t load of money

but if danny ends the season with at least 290 avg and 30 hr and 120 rbis he has a better chance for the FO to sign him

he is batting around .269, he will have to go on a terror to get back to .290, .280 seems like a more reasonable goal.

again with this conversation? ... you all must crazy not to want Dan in the team for the longterm.

They are not fans. They are Lorias.

I don't think you can jettison Uggla until you are 100 percent certain that Chris Coghlan could possibly replace him. Right now, I don't understand all the love for this guy. I don't follow the minor league players very closely, so maybe someone can explain to me why some people project him to be a replacement for Uggla in the major leagues? Its like some people assume that just because Beinfest is our GM that ever player in the minor leagues is SUPER AWESOME and will become the next big thing.

Is it really possible that Dan Uggla is not fully appreciated in these parts?

His defense is solid and that's plenty good to win in the ML's.

High strikeouts- so what! He's among the lead leaders in slugging!!!

Where would this team be this year without him? Take him out of the lineup and we are in big trouble. If the FO gets blown away with a trade offer then it should be considered- as with any player. He is at minimum the 2nd best player at his position. He is at his best one of the best power hitters in the entire game all the while playing at a position normally associated with sub-standard offensive production.

He becomes much more valuable with a fair deal in place-5yrs/30+ million. Any of the big market teams would gladly give up prospects for a power hitter signed to a minimal deal (from their perspective).

He's already the best 2B the Marlins have ever had (and I loved Castillo) and if he is traded we had better get some high level premium ML ready prospects.

When you watch him hit a homerun does it look like a free swinging guy who got lucky or a complete f***ing bad ass who can take any pitcher deep at any time?

This guy is fully legit and it would be in everybody's best interest to lock him up! If somebody else wants to throw 3 A+ prospects at us then that's another story. In the meantime enjoy the show.

easy there dude, U cannot say that Uggla is a better marlin than Castillo, Castillo did everything he was supposed to, gold gloves ever year, high batting average, 35+ stolen bases, and a great team player. Castillo by far is the best 2nd baseman the marlins have ever had
