Does Dan Uggla have a longterm future with the Marlins?

Featured Replies

I've seen some people suggest he should get a Hanley type deal to lock him up... now first of all, I think comparing him to Hanley is a bit unrealistic. He's nice, but he doesn't give you what Hanley does, nowhere near it to be honest.

I've been thinking about it, and at 28, a big strikeout guy, not really a great fielder... his upside is pretty much gone, what you see is what you will get. Now thats not exactly so terrible, but its not like Hanley, a guy with all the tools to succeed AND potential to improve still. Uggla's got great power for a second baseman and he could be an above average fielder at times, but thats about it. He's probably going to average around 30+ homers a year, so thats something, but he'll probably never hit much higher than .280 (I expect him to hover around .270 normally), he'll never win a gold glove, and he's a high strikeout guy.

I hate to tear down Dan like that but I'm trying to be realistic here. What do you think we end up doing with him... resign him to a Hanley type deal soon? Fight his arbitrators to try to hold onto him cheap til we get a new ballpark? Sit tight and pony up the cash when the time comes? Let him walk? Or trade him for prospects or other pieces?

All that being said, none of it really applies for the rest of this season, so don't slam me immediately. For the remainder of this season there's no doubt in my mind Uggla's a Marlin and I hope he can help us win it all this year. But I've been spoiled by some great defensive teams (Renteria, Castillo, Gonzalez), and with Hanley being shaky enough already at short, I have to admit I'm intrigued by the possibility of getting a great glove at second to pair with him somewhere down the line.

I'm just not a big fan of high strikeout poor fielding sluggers, and Dan kind of walks that thin line where I'm not sure if he hits just enough or fields just adequately enough that its ok in the long term.

Simple Answer:No

Why: Chris Coghlen

that is all u need to know

I think that the Marlins front office doesn't know what they have in Dan Uggla and as a result he will go on the be the great player somewhere else. Beinfest is an excellent GM, but there is definite "old school" style to the front office, where certain physical characteristics are over-appreciated.

i doubt it we have him for 3 more years then hes prob gone unless he makes some major improvement to his swing and defense and even speed

3 more years? I highly doubt it. If anything I think we move him this off season. And Major improvement to his speed and swing? huh? Have you seen his numbers this year? And why does he need to be fast?

If the team continues to be run like a Mickey Mouse franchise he'll be gone once his arbitration gets high and they'll call up Chris Coughlan. If they choose to run it like a normal franchise he should get a long-term deal (4-5 years) but definitely not one like the one Hanley got.

He'll leave...we'll get young quality players back.

Coghlan will be our 2B, and we'll still be competitive.

Dan Uggla is a streaky player; anyone who thinks he's worth Hanley Ramirez type money (considering we are, after all, a small market team) is crazy.

With a very good prospect waiting in the wings at 2B, Uggla is replaceable.

It's not a matter of normal vs. Mickey Mouse, in this instance it is more likely the correct move to make. Uggla is very good, but does carry some risk factors in that this might be his absolute career year, never to be duplicated again. For possible and probable he puts up numbers like he did his first couple years here for the next 4-5 years, in which case we are wasting a very valuable 7 million per year (which is what I figure it would take to keep him) when we already have a guy that will probably put up good numbers while making the league minimum.

Plus Uggla will get us back a couple more talented players.

Yeah, its not that I don't love Dan, but I really feel like we need to have a great second baseman to hide some of Hanley's deficiencies til he becomes more consistent. Everyone knows its all about being great up the middle, and even though we're way ahead of the curve offensively there, we're pretty weak defensively at short and second (Cody is awesome in center though, and Maybin's supposed to be great as well).

I can honestly see us being a better team with an awesome fielding second baseman maybe with some speed that could be a leadoff hitter or #2 hitter type. I'd love to see a second baseman good enough to lead off, and bump Hanley down to at least #2 in the order, opening up his RBI opportunities.

No one has a long term future with the Marlins!

Superstars will now, once a new stadium is in place.

Superstars . . . like Hanley Ramirez.

I wonder if we'll take an Evan Longoria type approach with some of our young guys once we hopefully get a new stadium.

I hope not. I wasn't a fan of that deal.

I know the kid has amazing potential, but one injury could kill that and he could end up like Kerry Wood.

And it wouldn't cost the rays much at all if that happens

yea he had very good numbers on his run but he hasent been consistent and spped would help him because if he walks he can be a threat to steal and give pitchers more to worry about

:thumbup It's why we the Marlins rarely give out long term deals. Just one bad deal could cripple the franchise for years. A guy like Hanley is obviously worth the exception though.

Edit: I just looked at Longoria's contact again and NNY is right...it is such a steal that it wouldn't cost the Rays anything even if they do lose him because of injury.

The contract was 6 years for $17.5 million.

There's always risk involved when signing a player to a long term deal like that (6 years), regardless of whether he's proven or unproven.

It's just the gamble (extra risk) your gonna have to take as a small market team that isn't willing to pay the big bucks to keep its players.

In my opinion, the reward outweighs the risk.

Now I'm not saying you go out and give that deal to everyone, but only to those guys that you think are the most talented and the hardest working. It's should be a combination.

We could do this or keep letting players go. For the most part I don't care how we do it, I just want to win.

Just an idea to throw out there.

there is a good chance that uggla will get traded during the offseason for a top prospect , but i'll still be very dissapointed. I love Uggla and his power numbers. And he is a very under rated defensive player. He doesnt deserve a Hanley ramirez contract, but if he would sign a contract like 5 years 25 mill, we should do it.

I actually (blindly) think Ugggla will be with us, just a feeling I have, for atleast another 3 years. I dont plan on seeing much of our team we have today, but Uggla I do imagine being on our team in the future.

With all the players we have going into arbitration, I'm gonna be very nervous this offseason.....

It might worth noting that Coghlan is an awfully raw 2nd baseman with 17 errors, three times as many as Dan, and projects to almost 30 over an average MLB season. And he's no Robert Andino whose high error count in AAA was because he refused to accept that there were any limits on his range and went far afield to make any play he could regardless of how it affected his stats. So if people think Dan is a mediocre 2nd baseman be warned, the kid is much worse.

And then there's Coghlan's hollow bat, which depending on what MLE you use projects out to a .250-ish hitter with no power and no production and his strikeouts go way up. But he is young so that fits in with the mentality here, you know if you're thirty you're over the hill. I laugh about it (and I do laugh about it, but not at you) because honestly I remember being the same way, thinking the same way - in my youth "Don't Trust Anyone Over 30" was the Yippie national anthem and the mantra for a whole generation.

Coghlan may very well have a long and productive future in the major leagues but he needs a lot more seasoning and to get some production from his bat and most importantly learn how to play his position professionally before he replaces anyone, whether it's Dan Uggla or anyone else. Hopefully he goes to the AFL for some fine-tuning, or is used for trade bait if the FO is making a run this year because he has a lot of value.
