Does Dan Uggla have a longterm future with the Marlins?

Featured Replies

easy there dude, U cannot say that Uggla is a better marlin than Castillo, Castillo did everything he was supposed to, gold gloves ever year, high batting average, 35+ stolen bases, and a great team player. Castillo by far is the best 2nd baseman the marlins have ever had

Uggla is simply a better hitter than Castillo. Enough so to even offset the difference in defense and speed.

Castillo was here for both Championships and was a big player in both.

Uggla has power, but he is just a hit or miss, u can't trust Uggla to score the run wit men on 1st and 3rd wit 1 out, Castillo is the more clutch player and has been in the organization longer, u cannot say Uggla is the better player all time after only 3 seasons in the bigs, that's like sayin that Chase Utley is currently the better all time phillie than Mike Schmidt

Dan Uggla is the best player the Marlins have ever had at 2b. It isn't even close.

Castillo was nice with the glove but offensively it isn't even close. Luis had exactly 1 season that was as good as Dan's worst season. He gets caught stealing so much that after 2000 his speed has been a detriment, he lacks any semblence of power and it isn't like he puts up hits like Ichiro to make up for it. We all have rose-colored glasses because of the 2003 WS, but he was not a big part of 1997 at all.

And all of this has nothing to do with the fact that we should lock up Uggla. Remember, Luis was with the Marlins for 10 years.

Castillo hit .240/.310/.270 in 1997. He was a giant hole in the lineup and the reason we went out for Craig Counsell. He was a pig part of 2003 though.

Also, just for your info:

Dan Uggla is .429/.333/.571 career with men on 1st and 3rd with 1 out.

Luis Castillo is .333/.364/.479.

Hopefully you can trust him now.

That said, they aren't even close offensively. I loved Louie, he had a ridiculously great glove, but I'd take Uggla of Castillo 100 times out of 100.

Nobody loves me anymore. :(

Uggla's slugging amongst 2B is great.

He's not really great at anything else, however.

I said this during the All-Star Break. His .OPS was 161 points higher than it was at the end of last year.

To me, he's just a very streaky hitter.

If he wants a long-term contract, he can prove he's worth it by proving last year was nothing more than a sophmore slump. I, personally, believe last year's Dan Uggla is more him than this years' 1st half Dan Uggla.

As "The_Godfather" said..."sell high, buy low."

See, it depends on how you feel. Was he more like himself last year or in 2006?

His OBP at the break was .035 over his rookie season. I don't think it's that big of a deal for a guy to increase his OBP by that after two seasons.

I think his he will be closer to this year than his sophomore slumping year in his career.

As I said, he can prove he's worth a long-term contract by continuing his 1st half success. He controls his own destiny. His staying or leaving with the Marlins will have a lot to do with how he does from here on out. Whether he can keep his #'s steady, or if they'll look more like last years' #'s.

I agree, but we sit on different sides of the fence.

You think he is the 2007 Uggla, I think he is closer to the 2006 Uggla.

You think he is the 2007 Uggla, I think he is closer to the 2006 Uggla.

And I think neither of those reflects Dan's true performance, and frankly 2006 and 2007 are in a similar statstical range. Dan is a .900 OPS guy (impressive given DS) as of now and it should hold up for a while.

The '06 and '07 Ugglas were basically the same.

I'll never understand the talk about Uggla having a bad '07.

The OPS differnce was .013. That's nothing.

:thumbup Great observation!

The OPS is the same (so the result was the same, and so you can't say he was sh*tty one year and great ht eother), however there is a difference between how they got the results. The '07 Uggla walked more, struck out more, hit for more isolated power, and had worse of a contact rate. Considering the decrease in his contact rate, you could easily argue he wouldn't be able to sustain the power numbers he had.

However, this season his again walking more, again striking out more, again putting up a considerable higher ISO, and again has a drop in contact rate from the previous season.

It's kind of funny...some of his periphials keep going to sh*t (LD%, contact rate, so forth) and yet his production continues to go up (ofcoarse other periphials also increase [i.e. walk rate, HR/FLY, so forth]).

I don't think you can jettison Uggla until you are 100 percent certain that Chris Coghlan could possibly replace him. Right now, I don't understand all the love for this guy. I don't follow the minor league players very closely, so maybe someone can explain to me why some people project him to be a replacement for Uggla in the major leagues? Its like some people assume that just because Beinfest is our GM that ever player in the minor leagues is SUPER AWESOME and will become the next big thing.

Haha, nice sig. Rab's reply to that was def. hilarious.

I'm not really sure what you look for in a player, Erick. It seems like you don't want to sign anyone to a long term deal who slumps. All players slump. Even the guy we signed slumps. Look at Chase Utley. He slumps. He's in a slump. Look at Carlos Delgado, he slumped for the better part of the year and suddenly is carrying the Mets on his back. Are these players not worth signing?

I love these threads where one of our best performers goes into a slump and someone is calling for them to be traded/not re-signed.

I'm not saying we should over pay for him, but the timing of this thread is awful.

Make this thread when he is smacking balls into the blue seats in LF and it would have much more validity to me.

I WANT to sign Uggla.

However, we are a small market team, and the only player on this team who has proven he cannot be replaced is Hanley Ramirez.

Once again...to quote "The_Godfather"..."sell high, buy low."
