August 11, 200818 yr Sheff is one of my favorite Marlins of all time. I used to emulate his swing (badly) when I was a kid, with that fierce bat waggle. Sentimentally, I'd LOVE to have him back. He was never a clubhouse cancer when he was on our ballclub, always one of the guys who would get our guys pumped before a big game. Realistically I highly doubt it will happen. I'll say this though, I'd stick him in left over Willingham right now, but if Josh continues to get healthy and starts swinging for power a bit more we'll be fine. The Tiger we could've used is Pudge, and that ship has sailed. We couldn't get Pudge. Detroit wanted a good middle reliever and that's just not something we have available for selling. I had heard... somewhere... that we did offer Lindstrom... but for some reason they preferred Farnsworth, Im guessing track record Wow I'd easily take Lindstrom over Farnsworth, and not because I'm a homer. The thing is, Lindstrom has shown as much as Farnsworth has in his career, but being younger, has the potential to improve. Farnsworth is always going to be a fireballer who never met his closer potential. Also would we have to give up anything of value to get Sheff through waivers? If not I'd definitely want us to pick him up, he's still a damn good ball player and he wouldn't hurt us defensively like Manny would have. He's no gold glover but he can move around and he's got a cannon for an arm.

You gotta remember, Lindstrom was looking pretty shaky at the time, I don't think he fixed his breaking ball at that point either, I could be mistaken on that though... Farnsworth's been somewhat reliable for the Yanks, and the Yanks took all of Pudge's contract, something I don't know if we were willing to do... Also, yes, we'd have to give the Tigers stuff so they'd eat Sheff's contract... Sheff's shoulder isn't exactly in great condition, either that or his wrist, which could affect his throwing, his running should be fine though, he did petition hard to Leyland to let him play in the OF... though at this point, I think we can do as good as Sheff in someone as non-flashy and cheaper in Kevin Millar or Jay Payton if we were going to add to the bench, but I don't think we even need to do that

I would take Kevin Millar back in a heartbeat. He has got to be one of the nicest people u will ever meet and makes a huge impression on the younger players. That would've been an excellent move by the marlins to get Kevin Millar, but again we do not have much need for him, right now our team is set everywhere except catcher
August 11, 200818 yr Is Sheff really the guy you want for two months at the price of a Lindstrom or equivalent? Do you net that much considering he's hardly the Sheff we all remember or even the guy of two years ago. Exhibit A - http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=2113

Getting Millar back is like replacing Josh Willingham with... Josh Willingham, minus a little bit of speed and fielding. Just, no.
August 11, 200818 yr From my understanding, the Tigers wanted Lindstrom for Pudge and we refused to deal him. If that's the case, they are gunna want the same thing and we are not gunna give it to them. Sheff is too old and will ruin team chemistry. I don't see any upside in getting him.
August 11, 200818 yr I don't want Sheffield. If were going to get someone Like him, Then I would much rather get Bonds! Bonds way better then Sheff. and wont cost us anything

Nah, Pudge is way better than Sheffield. They might still want a reliever, but not one as good as Lindstrom.

I think Sheff has a bigger contract they'd have to cover, I could be wrong about that... but if he does have a bigger contract, they'd ask for Lindstrom or maybe even more

August 11, 200818 yr Id actually rather just stick with what we have, unless Sheffiield is going to come for almost nothing. I wouldnt mind having him on our bench but im not doiwn to give up any good prospects for him.

I wouldnt mind having him on our bench but im not doiwn to give up any good prospects for him. very true plus hes on the brink of retirement and we already have 1 player whos considering we have a good lineup and bench we just need to step it up defensivly and a little more help from our starters getting quality outings
August 11, 200818 yr I'd love to have sheffield back but it's not going to happen. he wants to play in the outfield regularly and with willingham, hermida, and ross out there it's not going to happen. also he' owed 19 million the next two years and unless we give the tigers a good prospect they'd want us to pay his salary.
August 11, 200818 yr Jeff Conine for a third time anyone :shifty yes please, lol ill go knock on his door and ask if he wants to
August 11, 200818 yr haha this is funny but. Shef, I do root for him, he was a part of our team at a time and did quite well, but no thanks. Millar... I actually would... like lol And niner... he's welcome back anytime haha he's doing triathalons or something though
August 11, 200818 yr Man I miss those uniforms. Sheff was our first superstar, I can tell we have a few younger members on this board based on the negative reaction they have towards bringing him in, compared to those who are just dying for more Lo Duca. Not that I think we need Sheff, but he's easily better than Lo Duca right now. The difference is younger fans got to watch Lo Duca have a decent couple years with us, while they missed Sheff basically be the co-face of the franchise with Conine. Jeff was the PR face, but Sheff was the big bat.

August 11, 200818 yr Is he really going to give us much that we don't already have from Gonzo? Yes, bad attitude and constant complaining

And they are the same ones who were calling for Lo Duca in his thread. Its no coincidence they saw Lo Duca, but never got to enjoy Sheff. A little bit of selective homerism if you will.
