August 16, 200818 yr What is generally the "Accepted" percentage of saves for a closer? I am just curious where Gregg stands compared to league averages. He has currently saved 79 percent of the games in save opportunities.
August 16, 200818 yr I'm not sure...that's tough to find b/c the league average would probably include middle relievers blown saves, as well. In general, saves & save % are overrated statistics b/c they don't calculate the magnitude of it. For example, a 3 run "save" counts the same as a 1 run save, when in reality...it's not the same. Coming into a game to inherit runners (the 4 & 5 out saves, etc.), and get a save, counts just the same as a closer who comes in and gets a "1 out save." So in the end, it's not really the telling statistic. At the end of the day, Kevin Gregg is your average / replaceable closer, who...all in all, has done a decent job with the Marlins, in his 2 years here. He really would probably be a lot better in middle relief. He's the type of guy who likes to pitch everyday, and he can go multiple innings, as well.

He has currently saved 79 percent of the games in save opportunities. I looked at the closers 20+ save opportunities. These guys have blown 14% of their saves. Gregg, at 21%, ranks 23rd out of 27.

August 16, 200818 yr you have to include all closers, not just those with so many saves, because you have a heilman who has blown 7 saves and only has 2 saves. It is still bad, but I think if you include all save opprotunities this year we can see where he ranks overall. Vs. "Top closers" he is at the bottom though

Maybe a guy can't chase down a ball or plays a little lazy. Last night it was just a straight up blown save for him, so I guess it would be good to look at all his blown saves and everyones I guess. If you are going to compare.

August 16, 200818 yr Hey theres a guy whos been lights out in our bullpen and he has the stuff to be a closer Matt Lindstrom try it out all we need is 3 outs in the 9th inning and if gregg cant get them then we have to take him out
