September 6, 200817 yr If I remember correctly Castillo always seemed like he was hobbled by some sort of injury. Its a shame his speed disappeared a bit because of it, though he was still fast, just not nearly as fast as when he first came into the league. But he was a fundamentally sound player and a smart baseball player, and also a very unselfish baseball player. Hardest worker on the field day in and day out. Juan Pierre. (or so they said)... thought it was john baker Juan Pierre was one of my favorite guys, i know u all rag on him because he has a weak arm, which is odd for a Center fielder, but he just always got on base, he did everything to get in scoring position and let Cabrera or Lowell score him in. He also was a good fielder with the glove. Baker is said to be a hard worker. He has worked his a** off to prove to fredi that he can bat in the #2 spot. I like the guy, just don't know if he can keep these #'s for an entire season

September 6, 200817 yr Dunno what it is, but I've never been a fan of the power hitting 2B. I'm more of a fan of Luis Castillo circa 2000-type numbers: Avg: .334 OBP: .418 Runs: 101 Steals: 62 BB: 78 Only 2 HR, 17 RBI, but who cares. Smallball guy? That said, Luis could never give us the offensive numbers that Uggla gave us, but he was awesome. Also, that .334 AVG and .418 OBP was really a one time thing. His OBP as a Marlin is .370. .293/.370/.400 are his Marlins career numbers, btw. Yes to smallball. And IMO Castillo was a better fielder than Dan is a hitter. And also a better hitter than Dan is a fielder. If that makes sense.

The argument could be made about how he was a better fielder than Dan is a hitter, but Uggla has been a pretty good defensive 2B this year and has made HUGE strides, the ones I wanted to see Hanley make. Castillo was not as good a hitter as Dan is a fielder.
September 6, 200817 yr yep JP and Luis are 1 of the greatest 1-2 combos out there More because of Castillo than Pierre.
September 6, 200817 yr yep JP and Luis are 1 of the greatest 1-2 combos out there More because of Castillo than Pierre. well w/e i rember hwo we started the world series in 03 In NY Yankee Stadium Pierre starts off with a bunt hit and castillo slapped 1 over sorianos head amd pierro moved to 3rd the pudge hit a sac fly and the Yankee fans where quite for 5 innings til they scored i would love to have that combo with Maybin and Coghlan but they can be better with more power then you have hanley bat 3rd (hopefully he gets his RISP up next year)
September 6, 200817 yr Juan Pierre was one of my favorite guys, i know u all rag on him because he has a weak arm, which is odd for a Center fielder, but he just always got on base Not true. In fact, Juan Pierre was terrible at getting on base in any way except by getting a hit. One of the worst in baseball. If he goes into a slump he is worthless.
September 6, 200817 yr yep JP and Luis are 1 of the greatest 1-2 combos out there That's why I'm hoping we have Raynor/Coghlan 1-2 next year. It'd be a return to that style of baseball. Not saying they'll be as good as Pierre/Castillo '03 right away, but it'd be a step in the right direction.

September 7, 200817 yr errors are nothing That's all I got. I don't know where to find the .RZR, OOZ, etc. for minor league players. I even googled for defensive stats, and basically...all I got were the errors on the Carolina Mudcats roster page. Regardless, if he's doing well, defensively...he must be showing Chase Utley type range defensively b/c 23 errors is a whole lot.
September 7, 200817 yr well, you have to remember he didn't start really playing the posistion until last year. He's only average at best in range, but, that's Uggla too.

September 7, 200817 yr Uggla is in no way considered a good defensive 2b (and he's not exactly a thinking man's 2b)
September 7, 200817 yr this is one of the situations where I default to plus/minus, which I feel is greatly supperior to RZR/OOZ. However, RZR/OOZ is free to view, plus/minus you have to pay (What I'll probably do at the end of the season is get a one month perscription when the season is over, and get everything...but, better to wait until the end so that all numbers are final), so that's why I often use RZR/OOZ. And RZR/OOZ is often inline with what plus/minus produces, but there are times where the completely depthness of plus/minus will show a player being different than what RZR/OOZ shows. This is one of those cases. My first thing is regarding his actual range. My guess is that has more to do with defensive posistioning rather than actual range. Wether that's Andy Fox or Uggla himself is up for debate, but I'm pretty sure Fox controls all that. RZR/OOZ does not take in considering defensive posistioning. Considering Uggla always putting up good OOZ and yet very poor RZR, that would be my assumption. My other thing is that where he might get to a play that's out of zone, it isn't worth that much. For instance, he makes an out of zone play, but it's only worth +.1 of a point. Then he doesn't make a play he really should have made and loses -.9 points. So now he's at -.8 points. This itself would show only average range because while he can make an ooz play, he does make the great ooz plays like, say, adam evertt. in 2006 he was roughly average. In 2007, even though he made so many ooz plays, he was so poor at actually fielding that it completely negated that and he was the worse fielding 2b that year. This year seems to be a bit worse than 2006 but still roughly average. there's also other things taken into plus/minus that rzr/ooz doesn't take into considering that fall uggla even further (i.e. he's poor at turning a DP)

Why not look for someone better? Anyway, I thought Uggla was one of the best 2nd basemen in baseball. Assuming we can keep him, why don't we?

Uggla isn't (imo) in the top 5 2b in baseball (counting defense as well)
September 8, 200817 yr I meant: worst case, his D is = to Uggla's. Uggla isn't (imo) in the top 5 2b in baseball (counting defense as well) According to Baseball Win Shares this year, Uggla is tied for 5th in the category. I don't Uggla is the long-term solution here at 2B, but assuming we trade him, someday, we'd get some very good value back for him.
September 8, 200817 yr Uggla isn't (imo) in the top 5 2b in baseball (counting defense as well) okay just for kicks who's the 5 (or however many 2B) ahead of him?
September 8, 200817 yr Uggla isn't (imo) in the top 5 2b in baseball (counting defense as well) okay just for kicks who's the 5 (or however many 2B) ahead of him? The only category I think Uggla is considered to be in the Top 5 is in power. Overall hitting he might be in the Top 10. Fielding I don't think he's even in the Top 10.
