Frisaro mentions Griffey...

Now i know we're tired of seeing all these threads about the Marlins signing every possible free agent but according to Joe Frisaro's new Mailbag on floridamarlins.com he answered a question about the Marlins going after Griffey in a positive manner. He basically said that if the marlins are willing to trade Hermida, he wouldnt be surprised to see them sign Griffey as a starter for like a one year deal around the 3 million dollar range....do you think Frisaro is blowing smoke or could Griffey be a viable option???

If we're trading Hermida we would be replacing him with a guy who will OPS north of .800, not below.

(Plus the whole extreme unlikelyhood of Griffey signing a 1 year contract, Griffey singing a 3 mil per year contract, Griffey signing a 1 year, 3m contract, Griffey signing a 1 year, 3m contract with the Florida Marlins)

Griffey put up average numbers last year playing in hitter's parks.

You honestly think Ken "I'm turning 39 next year" Griffey is going to perform better one year older...hitting in Dolphin Stadium (also known as the place LH hitters go to die)?

...and at the amount of money he's going to get?

Yeah, no thanks.

Stick with Hermida for at least another year. If Hermida doesn't get it done this year, then trade him if you want. Fact is, trading Hermida would be dumb. Period.

Erick senor, it is not like Hermida would be given away.

So we're trading a 24 year old OF'er who had an OPS+ of 125 as a 23 year old to get older and worse at the position? Stop thinking about the name...Griffey is not good anymore.

Not to mention we'd be trading away Hermida to not get max value in return b/c Hermida's coming off an off year...or better yet, he's coming off a year where he struggled to hit in a football stadium. Outside of the sh*tty stadium, Hermida had an .851 .OPS on the road. But he's terrible. Lets get Griffey who's only getting older, and has had a nice history of injuries...and can barely produce average #'s nowadays playing a good portion of his games in hitters' parks.

Great idea.

EDIT: We'd also spend much more on Griffey. Which makes this make even less sense. If we're gonna trade Hermida, there are other OF'ers on the FA market who I'd rather see replace Hermida.

If Hermida's off year is an issue the Marlins could package him.The Marlins have already shown in midseason that they are willing to trade Hermida, and will if they like what they get back.

On top of the return in a Hermida trade, the Marlins have outfield prospect options in the minors for the post Griffey era.

Hermida was in rumors...for Manny Ramirez, during a playoff run. It's a little different now, no?

As far as outfield prospect options in the minors...who? You're not EXPECTING Mike Stanton to be up at the age of 20, do you? Raynor? Seriously, who?

Why sign Griffey for millions when he's more than likely to produce less than what Hermida did this past season, while Hermida has yet to reach his prime, and is more than likely to become better...and is, at least, for sure, cheaper...giving us other options at other positions, which would actually be considered a weakness at this point?

B/c his name is Ken Griffey Jr., and his rookie cards are really valuable?

I'd rather have Rocco Baldelli, for crying out loud.

The Marlins wanted to trade Hermida for only half a season of Manny Ramirez.Yeah that really shows how valuable and untouchable Hermida is.

RETRO, WHAT IS THE POINT OF MAKING THIS DEAL???

RETRO, WHAT IS THE POINT OF ADDING GRIFFEY WHEN HE WILL DO WORSE AND COST MORE MONEY THAN THE GUY EVERYONE ON THIS BOARD, HATES FOR SOME REASON???

HERMIDA IS A LOTTTTTT BETTER THAN JOHN RAYNOR...AND SCOTT COUSINS.

MIKE STANTON IS A COUPLE YEARS AWAY...THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE GRIFFEY WON'T LAST A COUPLE YEARS.

Are you kidding me?

Manny Ramirez is one of the better hitters in all of baseball...and the Marlins were trying to make a statement to their fanbase...by trading for him, to try and make the playoffs.

That type of scenario isn't going to play out in an offseason, where stars are looking for long-term contracts NOW.

When you're talking about signing Griffey a team really has to dot the i's and cross the t's regarding the deferred portion of his existing contract (cots: "57.5M in salary deferred at 4% interest, to be paid 2009-2024, reducing contract's present-day value at time of signing to between $9.2M and $9.3M annually, according to Reds management sources" plus $16 million for 2009 (which after all would be the year we're talking about or absent that a $4 million buyout which defeats the purpose.

You probably need three teams of lawyers and twice as many CPAs to figure who owes what under what is one of the strangest contracts in the history of the game. Who knows what language is in there.

ERICK GARCIA CRUZ DIAZ, YOU SPEAK LIKE HERMIDA IS A RISING STAR.HERMIDA HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT INJURY PRONE AND DISAPPOINTMENT THUS FAR.

AND REALLY SPENDING 2-3 MILLION MORE ON GRIFFEY IN 2009 WOULD NOT BE A BIG DEAL.

BECAUSE IN 2010 YOU WILL BE DEBATING HERMIDA AT 5$ MILLION OR THAT GREAT OUTFIELD PROSPECT WE HAVE.

A) Hermida is a potential rising star. 24...he's 24...24 years old...with a career .830 road .OPS. I know...VERY disappointing. John Raynor is good, though. That's not hypocritical or anything.

B) Spending 2-3 million is significant when you're a small market team who's already said that the limit of your spending will be around 35 mill...and you have to offer arbritration to Nolasco, JJ, etc. If you want to spend 2-3 million on 1 player, sweet. At least try to spend it on an upgrade.

C) That's the point. Trade players when their value is at their highest, not their lowest...that way you're always set for the future, in terms of prospects. Hermida's value right now is not at its highest.

THUS FAR is the operative point in your thread. Who knows what 2009 holds in store for Hermida. If he continues to disappoint then in 2010 we can worry about finding another OF.

We don't need Griffey nor should we want Griffey. Hes a waste of money that can be better spent elsewhere. I don't think he'll provide more than Hermida and his defense is worse.
