WEEI even today is still talking about possibly dumping Ortiz. It is basically coming down to Lowell or Ortiz. The banter is still keep Lowell for a year or two basically and move Ortiz for some future players at either 3B/1B depending on where Youk and Tex end up. IDK if it is a good move, but considering how Epstein does things it is not that surprising of a move really.

The Red Sox might not be so close to the deal... the word is Teixeira wants an opt-out close and the red sox do not do them. The whole front office is standing by that so if that is the make or break he most likely will end up in Baltimore/Washington

I agree with the wrist problems and bad season last year if they can get something it would a good move. They are reporting later in the day on WEEI that they are getting a lot of offers for Lowell so he will probably move.

If the Sox feel like they can get something decent for Ortiz, I would move him if they were confident that they could sign Tex.

It would make more sense to have Tex DH, Youk at First and Lowell at third for two years. Then they can move Jed Lowrie over to third, a more natural position for him, and hope in the Ortiz deal to get a prospect SS+whatever. Or they can resign Cabrera.

A few days ago we saw the Red Sox 'supposedly' drop out of the Teixeira sweepstakes. As owner John Henry concluded after his trip to Texas to meet with Mark and his agent, Scott Boras--the Red Sox are "not going to be a factor".

 

Now it appears the Angels have informed the media that they are dropping out as well.

No, Lowell is not a Free Agent, the Red Sox have him under contract until 2010. If they do sign Tex, though, there is no doubt they will trade Lowell. There was even a report in the Boston Globe that said the Red Sox "would likely spin Mike Lowell to another team" if they sign Mark Teixeira.
