December 23, 200817 yr there seriously needs to be a salary cap in baseball, this is getting out of control x2 agree 100% baseball is slowly becoming not fun to follow anymore and they are going to start losing fans over this if they dont do something about it.
December 23, 200817 yr Yankee fans are getting spoiled lmao Since when have they not been spoiled, lol.
December 23, 200817 yr there seriously needs to be a salary cap in baseball, this is getting out of control just waiting on Manny and DLowe now. It is ridiculous.
December 23, 200817 yr also putting in a salary cap will allow teams to sign players for less money because there won't be as many bidding wars and options.
December 23, 200817 yr If the Yankees fail to make the playoffs again next season, look for riots to destroy the new Yankee stadium....
December 23, 200817 yr No need for a salary cap in baseball. First of all, it's anti-free market which is essentially anti-American. Secondly, teams like the Marlins and A's have PROVEN that you don't need a lot of money to have success. If only teams like the Pirates, Nationals, and Royals spent more time patterning their rosters like the A's and Marlins of the world rather than whining about the lack of a salary cap...
December 23, 200817 yr Same stupid ass yankees and their way of handling losing. "Hey! Lets go out and keep buying players!!! (but we'll still suck :-D) " I hope they dont win sh*t for 30 years.
December 23, 200817 yr Hey, Gotta hand it to the Nats. They are really trying to become better. It's a shame they didn't land Tex....would have gone a long way to making them better.

I think salary has proven not to be the main factor in good teams. It might equate to longevity for the big spenders, but other than that nothing so special.

Yeah, I mean...obviously the more money you have, the more chance to bring in better players....but there are alternatives.

December 24, 200817 yr Now they have high chances to get either Sheets or D Lowe. God Dammit i can't belive this, if they don't win the World Series or even get to the Playoffs they're definatly going to have firesale and start all over giving away old guys like Damon Posada Giambi maybe even DJ and Mariano
December 24, 200817 yr Now they have high chances to get either Sheets or D Lowe. It is against baseball's rules for them to sign one of those. Literally. So you don't have to worry.

December 24, 200817 yr You can only sign so many Type A free agents per offseason. From Cots http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com : If 0-14 players file for free agency under Article XX (B) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, no team may sign more than 1 Type A or B player. If 15-38 players file for free agency, no team may sign more than 2. If 39-62 players file for free agency, no team may sign more than 3, with the limits increasing accordingly for higher totals. A club may sign an unlimited number of free agents who do not qualify as Type A or B free agents. A club may sign as many type A and B free agents as it has lost, regardless of the limits above.

If only teams like the Pirates, Nationals, and Royals spent more time patterning their rosters like the A's and Marlins of the world rather than whining about the lack of a salary cap... While I'm inclined to agree, one thing does come to mind. When we talk about the Marlins and A's of the world, we are talking about good scouting, drafting, player development, and careful use of resources, etc. I think, no? Well, I don't know why it seems like there are still teams who don't go these routes; however, when you get a team like the Red Sox who, under Epstein, have combined the two, they have had tremendous success recently, with little reason to think they are going anywhere anytime soon. If the Marlins had another $20 million to spend, they would have a very high likelihood of fielding a better MLB team each year. Like the Red Sox do, there is no reason not to draft well, etc. but spend some money to fill holes on the MLB roster. It's also nice to be able to retain free agents or arbitration-eligible players who will help the team (not saying the Marlins failed at this in this offseason, just as a general statement). At least one caveat comes to mind here. [Maybe] If the Marlins spent more and were in contention more, they might trade more prospects (at the trading deadline) and thus have a more depleted farm system. Just thought I'd mention it to be a bit more fair. Personally, if I'm Yankee ownership, I research all the best people in the scouting world and pay them all double, which would probably cost less than 1/2 of any of these FA's. With their wallets + good scouting I can't see how they'd be beatable, except that the playoffs are extremely luck-based.
