Dan Uggla's future

Featured Replies

I wonder what the thinking about Dan Uggla is according to the front office? Personally, I would like to see the Marlins give Uggla a long term contract and keep him around to play in the new stadium. 2B with the power Uggla has are very rare and it would be nice to see him and Ramirez to turn double plays for a long, long time in teal. With a new stadium on the way the Marlins need to quit playing the poor act and keep a few of the core players around and Uggla should be one of them. He's going to be 29 in March but I've seen no reason to think that he won't hit in the near future. If the Marlins decide to trade him (quite possible) then they better make darn sure they get what he's worth.....which is a lot.

It depends on how you define longterm. If they want to buy 2 years, which is what Texas did with Teixeira, no problem. Anything more is very bad payroll management because we would be paying a premium price for Uggla right now coming off his peak year, and it's doubtful he remains a high 800 OPS because of his contact issues. Dishing him a 5 year contract, which is what I think you mean, would be horrific. He is not a star like Hanley. And this is especially true with Coghlan and Bonifacio around. We have his rights for 3 years, not a big deal. He's not going anywhere if we want him.

The only players the Marlins should be thinking about buy outs are Maybin, and all 5 starting pitchers. Whoever shows up next year, should get 5+ year contracts from that group. Everyone else, including Hermida even if he OPS's .900 next year, should not be bought out at this time.

I'm pretty sure everyone knows what I think about this. :thumbdown

I wouldn't give Uggla a long-term contract.

I don't think that the Marlins should buy out Maybin until they see what he can do with 500-600 AB's. I think the same can be said about the starting pitchers as they have all had injury concerns in the past except Volstad. I prefer to see at least some big time numbers being put up before money is spent. As for players that fit that mold on the Marlins only Ramirez and Uggla qualify.

Come on now.

If the Marlins aren't going to sign him to a long term contract then they should trade him now. The Marlins could get a huge haul from a team like the Giants or Indians who would love to have a 2B like him.

I've said this for awhile now, too.

The problem with waiting to trade a player like Uggla is that the market will likely be limited in July. If you trade him now I can think of a lot of teams that would be interested in him. I happen to think Uggla is the 2nd best player on the Marlins without a doubt and I think they should keep him but it seems like not too many people here agree. Uggla has a career OPS of .831 which is pretty darn awesome for a 2B and he has averaged 105 runs scored, 30 homers and 90 RBIs per season which are outstanding numbers. Teams like the Giants and Indians might not be buyers in July so it makes sense to call them if the Marlins aren't going to make some kind of financial commitment to Uggla. Let's not kid ourselves because his numbers will get him a huge raise every year in arbitration which is usually when the Marlins jettison their talented players.

I agree... Really no players should be getting them, but def. not Uggla. 2-3 year deal with options maybe would be a good idea.

Yeah, I remember reading some article breaking down trades from the past, like, decade or something.

Teams always got more value in trades during the offseason.

In the offseason, teams that have no business competing start to think "hey, maybe we have a shot"

But when you're .400 in July, well, yeah...kinda different.

I'd take him for 1 years2 Million dollar contract with a 2nd year team option so if he plays solid like he can we bring him back again but if he dosen't then off he goes

But thats just me

What would you guys do?

Yea but do we really have the money to afford anything more at most maybe 5 Mil?

If he really wants to play here he would sign for anything over $1M

But most likley he's gonna sign with the team that gives him big bucs

Yeah, and it's nice to see someone take that angle. It's a shame that some of the best debaters and knowledgeable minds across this forum have significant trouble in those areas, and I'm sure it rubs off on people.

Remember when 2006 was his peak year? :mischief
