January 20, 200917 yr Okay, this is copied and pasted, and subsequently edited/updated, from an old MarlinsLou post: C John Baker $405,000 1B G. Sanchez $400,000 2B Dan Uggla $5,250,000 3B Jorge Cantu $3,500,000 SS Hanley Ramirez $5,500,000 RF Jeremy Hermida $2,250,000 CF Cameron Maybin $400,000 LF Cody Ross $2,250,000 B Wes Helms $950,000 B Dallas McPherson/4th OF $500,000/??????? B Roert Andino $410,000 B Alfredo Amezaga $1,300,000 B Backup Catcher ??????? SP Josh Johnson $1,400,000 SP Ricky Nolasco $2,400,000 SP Chris Volstad $405,000 SP Andrew Miller $1,350,000 SP Anibal Sanchez $420,000 RP Matt Lindstrom $420,000 RP Scott Proctor $750,000 RP Leo Nunez $420,000 RP Reynel Pinto $420,000 RP Logan Kensing $660,000 RP Eulogio De La Cruz $400,000 RP Dan Meyer $400,000 By my count, base = $32,880,000. We also need to add a backup catcher to this. I suspect Pudge may only cost $2-3 million at this point, and Eric Hinske might cost the same. If we add both and subtract DMac, we are looking at $37-$39 million. If we stick with DMac and he can be our 4th OF and play LF, and Rabelo is the backup catcher, then this roster is just under $33 million, +/- Uggla's deviation from $5,250,000. What are the latest indications on the total salary the team is willing to take on? The Helms signing looks terrible from this vantage point. If they really like EB, they could trade Amezaga, put EB in his spot, save $900k, and use that to soften the blow of a $1-$2 million 4th OF type. Uggla's number that comes out of arbitration could still end up being very important. I think this is properly updated at this point.
January 20, 200917 yr Let me try to explain the Helms signing since everyone thinks is bad. The contract he signed with the Phillies he had a club option of 3.75M in 2009 or a 0.75M buyout. So they had 2 options pay him 3.75M for one year, or give him 0.75M and let him go. They signed him for 2 years for 1.9M, 0.95M per year. So if they didnt rework the deal, they would have spent 0.75M for nothing. So look at it as they signed him for .575M for the next 2 years. Add if you dont want to see it that way, then we only paid him $1 to play for us last year.

And the signing is horrible as this organization has 3 corner options - Cantu, McPherson, G. Sanchez - and could have easily obtained another 1B/LF type player that makes more sense than a 1B/3B.
January 20, 200917 yr I suspect Pudge may only cost $2-3 million at this point, and Garret Anderson might cost the same. If we add both and subtract DMac, we are looking at $38-$40 million. Garret Anderson will not be playing for us next year. He has stated that he wants to play full time b/c he want to reach the 3,000 hits milestone. So a platoon situation for us is out of the question.
January 20, 200917 yr Nolasco will be paid less than your $3M estimate. I'm pretty sure $3M is higher than his arbitration asking price- not by much though. I don't think Amezaga or Ross will get as much as you are estimating either, but I'm not sure of their figures.

January 20, 200917 yr I wouldn't mind bringing back Luis Gonzalez if he wished to return. I think he did a very good job for us last year.
January 20, 200917 yr I wouldn't mind bringing back Luis Gonzalez if he wished to return. I think he did a very good job for us last year. The problem with Luis is that he plays very very poor defense. The fascination with Garrett Anderson on this board does surprise me. Not only because he produces at a level that we can easily buy for 1m, but the guy has bum knees. We do NOT want an injury prone bench player. I mean, I realize this is basically just mimicing my post in the OF thread but Anderson does not make sense. Gonzo plays bad defense so he is not in our best interest, plus he'd still want multi-millions I'm sure. Cliff Floyd also falls under this. Eric Hinske is basically always good for a ~800 OPS against RHP, potentially even mid-to-high 800's like he did last season. He plays average to above average defense at 4 positions (1B/3B/LF/RF). The biggest question mark with him is cost, but he'll go for around the same amount as the aboves and give a lot more production. Which then brings us to Daryle Ward. Average defense in LF/RF/1B, basically always good for an upper .700 OPS against RHP. The bigger thing? He's going to come for at most 800k. He might even get nothing more than a MILB deal. He gives us the most production for the buck. Hell it'd probably be better for us to send a MILB deal to Ben Broussard and let him battle it out with Gibbons in ST then spend that much money on a 4th OFer. The only one you can justify paying that much is somebody like Griffey who would be platooning and getting a lot of starts.
January 20, 200917 yr Nolasco just signed apparently... $2.45M is what I'm reading via second hand text.

The Helms signing looks terrible from this vantage point. If they really like EB, I'd love to trade Amezaga, put EB in his spot, save $1.25 million-ish, and use that to soften the blow of a Garret Anderson-type signing. The actual numbers that come out of arbitration may end up being very important (Uggla, Nolasco, Ross, Amezaga). Of those, I think there is a 0% chance we move Nolasco or Ross and just a small chance we move Uggla, but their respective salaries will probably go a long way toward determining whether we make a run at the $2-5 million guys or just the $400k-$1 million players. Pudge Rodriguez 2-3 million? I know there is a recession, but seriously Pudge will sign for about 5-6 million BTW Lou was way off on Cantu
January 20, 200917 yr Did anyone ever see the infamous (and now closed) "darylewardsucks.com" that was around for many, many years?
January 20, 200917 yr Nolasco just signed apparently... $2.45M is what I'm reading via second hand text. if that's true, real nice for us.
January 20, 200917 yr I wonder if this trend (and players are not settling for these numbers for any other reason than there is an expectation of what they would receive this year through arbitration) is occurring throughout baseball? I admit to not really paying attention to what players on other teams have signed for relative to what was projected.

The only one you can justify paying that much is somebody like Griffey who would be platooning and getting a lot of starts. Very good stuff, as usual. I was mainly using the idea of Anderson as a baseline from which to evaluate our options. It's true that this team can't afford to waste millions on an injury-prone guy who, even if healthy, would only be a 4th OF. Hinske's ability to play 3rd base could make him especially valuable. He could make McPherson very expendable, not to mention another way to mix and match with Cantu should Gaby struggle with ML pitching. In fact, if we get Hinske, don't we have to trade Dallas? Has anyone heard what they project the total salary ceiling for this team to be? Eddie - that was certainly the original thought, I'm just shocked by the seeming lack of interest in Pudge. Also, I believe it was MLBTR who was speculating that he may very well be a ST invitee for some club, and I didn't think a ST invitee could make that much, but I could certainly be wrong.
January 20, 200917 yr Miami Herald says the Marlins signed Ross to a 1-year, 2.225 million deal and also signed Amezega (terms not disclosed). That leaves only Uggla going to arbitration.

He could make McPherson very expendable, not to mention another way to mix and match with Cantu should Gaby struggle with ML pitching. In fact, if we get Hinske, don't we have to trade Dallas? Right now I'm under the assumption that the FO wants Dallas to essentially become Hinske, which in essence moots all talk about a fourth OFer. He has played LF in the past, but has committed a lot of errors there and, from basically all accounts, looked extremely uncomfortable. However, we know that errors isn't really a way to measure somebody defensively. With experience, will he learn to field the position adequately? It'll be something interesting to see in ST: how often do they seen Dallas in the OF.
January 20, 200917 yr I would love to get Pudge for a 1 year $2-3 million contract, but at this point it seems more likely that we bring back Rabelo to be our backup catcher

January 20, 200917 yr simply how the roster is built. Right now our bench options are Wes Helms Amezaga Andino Dallas Catcher Emilio Gibbons/other minor league dudes Catcher, Helms, and Amezaga are going to be guaranteed spots. that means we have two spots left. Gibbons/other minor league guys probably don't have a high chance of making camp so we can cross that off. That leaves us with Andino, Dallas, and Emilio for the last two spots. Considering they have tried to trade him in the past we can assume Andino will lose his spot (and honestly have to wonder if he could pass through waivers). Emilio CAN be optioned but will they really do that after the trade and seriously talking about him being in the running for the 3b job? Like I said before, it's just my assumption. By no means set in stone belief.
January 20, 200917 yr Uggla, seeking $5.35 million, was the only Marlin to exchange salary figures with the team at Tuesday's noon deadline. The Marlins countered with an offer of $4.4 million, which would still represent a massive raise over the $417,000 Uggla made last season. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...,0,210798.story
