November 6, 200322 yr Lowell for Helton?????? I'm just throwing something out there nothing to it Also, Castillo appears to be a lock to...........St Louis or Chicago Cubs. NOT THE YANKEES like Vlad, Castillo is a very shy kid and doesn't want the pressure that comes from being in NY. Lee is NOT a done deal that he's gone but if push comes to shove he'll be traded to somewhere on the westcoast(Oakland or SF) Basically if he demands a 8 million a year.... BYE. If Pudge leaves which is right now at 60% his gone, the team will try and bring in another name via trade or free agent signing. Two name to keep in mind Vina(if he doesn't go west closer to home LA), and Raul Ibanez(hometown kid who's a lthe left-handed bat that is badly needed next season). Just some thoughts and whispers :whistle
November 6, 200322 yr I would do the deal in a heartbeat, if we could then trade Lee for a decent outfielder. Helton is the best first baseman in baseball by far, and would help us greatly. His salary might be a problem, though.
November 6, 200322 yr I know this pretty much has no shot of happening but I thought I'd throw it out. Lee and Penny For Helton and Brian Fuentes
November 6, 200322 yr :mischief2 I would love to get Helton or Vina as replacements for them. IF we get Helton he can be the substitute bat we can use for Pudge. I love Helton when he is hitting and at defense isnt too bad. I would love to see what he can do out of coors field....
November 6, 200322 yr I just don't think we can afford him any longer than we can keep Lowell without an extension.

November 6, 200322 yr why even bother bringing up Helton? I expect to see Luis in a Cardinal uniform. Heck, he's been saying all season how he'd love to be paired back with Renteria again. Not to mention him complaining that he he's not going to play under a one-year deal anymore...

I don't think this is EdCanes coming up with an original idea, more of relaying the FO's ramblings to the faithful
November 6, 200322 yr I really don't believe we need Castillo that much. With his steals down from last year, and those nagging leg injuries, he's not worth any more than $2-2.5 mil a year. Any more than that and you're overpaying. I admit he has great defense, but that can be replaced.
November 6, 200322 yr Lets not fall into the trap of investing a huge chunk of our tiny payroll in one player. If we are going to drop Pudge/Lee/Castillo let's try and get some good young players and some decent cheap vets to hold down the fort and provide some competition. Albeit Vlad/Helton would be awesome players for us it would totally limit us on payroll. We have some studly pitchers we want to resign as well. I've been seeing some interesting things being thrown around by some very knowledeable baseball guys I know who also have some inside sources. They say Pudge is just posturing and that he will eventually be resigned by the Marlins with a contract range of between 3-4yrs @ 25-32 mill. Most of them have Luis going elsewhere with us picking up Vina/Walker/or the defector. About half have Lee traded and half signed...those with him traded see him getting us a pitcher and a stud middle infield prospect. Most have us losing UU, but thats a draft pick.
November 6, 200322 yr Helton's contract is a killer. It would undo everything this team tried to accomplish by trading away Wilson (who is also available again) and Johnson. Not in a million years. Castillo is supposed to be very introverted and wants to be united with Renteria again. Nothing I'd like to see more Luis (if we have to lose him) beating up on the Cubs all season. Being in the same division the Cardinals play the Cubs the way we play Atlanta/Phillies, eyc.
November 6, 200322 yr I also just found an article that says one of the Jones' will be available if the Braves resign Sheff.
November 6, 200322 yr This didn't deserve its own thread but I've been talking with some guys about whether the Fish will have a similiar Angels-like meltdown after our title and here's what one guy had to say about our chances in the NL East 04' "they're pretty clearly the preseason favorites in the NL East. " When did I hear that before...? Oh yeah I remember, last spring. Hahahahaha. Fearless prediction: Unless the Braves do a total firesale (which they won't) they will win the NL East again. I doubted them a little in '02, and a bit more in '03 (although I kept the faith throughout) and something tells me not to pick against them. Plus, I think Sheff is coming back. The Phils do look pretty good on paper but I have no reason to have any sort of trust in Admin Bowa. The Marlins won't go Angels, their pitching is too good. The Angels had 5 #2 or #3 guys, the Marlins have 2 or 3 potential aces and Pavano and Penny will be solid behind the others. They should repear as the National League WC.
November 6, 200322 yr would i do Lowell for Helton? no chance in hell Todd Helton 1B COL Signed Mar 2001 - 9 years/$141.5M 2003: $10.6M 2004: $11.6M 2005: $12.6M 2006: $16.6M 2007: $16.6M 2008: $16.6M 2009: $16.6M 2010: $16.6M 2011: $19.1M 2012: Team option $23.0M or $4.6M buyout -Can void the deal after 2007

That contract would cripple us.
November 6, 200322 yr Mike Lowell will be offered a mulityear contract extension by the Marlins this winter. Lowell, who figures to make at least $7 million next season if he goes to arbitration, will probably want a contract worth around $8 million per season. The Marlins shouldn't go that high to keep him, but it's possible that they will, especially if Ivan Rodriguez leaves. c/o rotoworld
November 6, 200322 yr that contract is BRUTAL. and taking a hitter out of coors and putting them into the Pro isnt fair to ANYONE.
November 6, 200322 yr what about Keeping Pudge and Lowell. Letting Castillo and Urbina fly away and trying to get a good trade with Lee? we would still hv our staff, catcher and 3b man. We would lose Castillo and Urbina...but still hv Looper there. Bottom line is .. It really isnt a big deal to raise the cap to 75 million or so. The fact that we won the World Series is enough to get fans to come out (more Money). I feel keeping Lowell and Pudge are the Key points. We cant expect to contend if we have a 50 million dollar salary vs the salaries being dished out by other teams. Its sad if we let the stars go just like that.
