Why is Hermida coming out of games?

Featured Replies

A good example is the catch Brett Carroll made to end the game on Wednesday. He made it harder than it should of been however what do u think the chances are that Hermida would have made that play?

No chance hermi makes that play

I disagree. Maybe Hermida wouldn't have taken one step back, split second hesitated, taken three steps to his left, and then gone forward and to the right to make the catch. Carroll made it harder than it had to be.

In watching Carroll, he seems to have very good instincts and takes good routes. If he had trouble on the play then I would assume that all the factors, sun, the way the ball came off etc. would have completely fooled Hermida. Hermy maybe makes the play because he would freeze and the ball would just come to him.

Question...Why is Carroll replacing Hermida late in games? Surly Hermida can't be as bad on D as Cody Ross is... I also understand giving Carroll some playing time cause he had a good spring, he deserves it..etc.. but why take out Hermida over Ross? Is it Hermida's bat? Carroll isnt nearly in Hermidas league in batting either.... I suspect Hermida is possibly on the fringe with the Marlins Brass and coaching staff...If the fish tail off in mid june/july..I believe that both Uggla and Hermida are out.

Defensive replacements late in the game are intended to help maintain a lead when defense is more important than offense. Carroll is a much better outfielder than Hermida, specially since this is the first time Hermida has played left field. They did the same with Jacobs last year by taking Jacobs out, moving Cantu to first and placing Helms at third.

No sh*t.

Well this thread has officially turned into a joke.

Brett Carroll is, by both the numbers and scouting, a plus plus defender. His calling card is his arm, which has ranked by Baseball America as the top arm in the system for several years running now and is one of the best in all of baseball, and he also has good range. He projects to have a ~20-30 UZR/150, which is obscene.

Hermida doesn't come closer to Carroll, period.

And as far as the arguement of Carroll/Maybin/Cody being probably the best OF defense in all of baseball.

Maybin is, by both the numbers and scout, a plus plus defender. Dude was ranked our best defensive OFer by Baseball America this season and would have last season but he was a Tiger at the time. I mean, the accelodets of his defense in the scouting community is obscene. He has a career UZR/150 of over 50 in CF, which is seriously in legendary status. Now it's only in 109 innings and will likely fall down to the 30 range, but we're still talking about one of the best defensive OFers. And the fun of it all is he's a still a bit rough around the edges, yet is already one of the best.

Cody Ross is by scouting a plus to plus plus defender, and by the numbers a plus plus defender. He was rated as a "good" defender by Baseball America as a prospect, and has greatly improved since then. He doesn't have the arm power of Maybin/Carroll, but he's still about average there. He is not speedy but he takes all the right routes, more importantly he doesn't do anything stupid. He had the highest UZR/150 of any CFer with atleast 850 innings played. At 18.1. In other words, you can make the argument he was the best defensive starting CFer last season. That number will ofcoarse go up as a corner OFer.

That is likely why you think Cody is a bad defender lol. He doesn't do anything that "looks" special. He doesn't do the diving plays or such. He makes everything look routine. But doesn't that just tell you how f***ing good he is when he makes everything look routine?

I'm not sure what the joke is and I really don't see how any argument can be made otherwise.

Scouts, who are payed top dollar for their opinion, don't agree with you. Numbers, which show you what happened on the field, don't agree with you.

I appologize if this post comes a little aggresively, but OF defense is one of our top strong suits, so you insulting it makes not much sense.

basic answer to this thread. Jeremy Hermida sucks at life.

Or post an .870 .OPS at the age of 23 in the big leagues. But yeah, he's garbage. :whistle

Btw, you still haven't told us why Daniel Murphy is gonna be a superstar. Remember your claim? "Daniel Murphy is a star in the making, and we all know it."

different thread. Nothing to do with Hermida and the topic at hand. I feel Murphy will be good just because of his swing, which is a nice leveled swing. He also has a very good eye at the plate from what i have seen and has played the outfield very well for the Mets. Hermida continues to have that uppercut swing when he is not a home run hitter in my eyes, and everybody praised how great a fielder he was when he first came up, now everybody is seeing how bad at fielding he really is and how lazy a fielder he really is.

and we can talk about that .870 OPS when he does that consistently. Until then, Hermida is the epitome of a "Half Season Wonder"

Lou posted this once... but I really think either people missed it, or just flat out ignored it... if you look at Hermida MONTH-BY-MONTH in his career... you'll see he has great months... and then bad months... is he inconsistent? Absolutely... but is he a bad player by any means? Not at all...

DS has been notoriously bad on LHB, and Hermida didn't thrive there, surprise surprise, but having the choice of kicking butt or chewing bubble gum on the road last season, Hermida was out of bubble gum...

That... and, it can't be stressed enough, he's not BAD at defense, he's at the least, average

1. Hermida isn't a terrible fielder.

2. If you're gonna call him a "half season wonder" (btw, that .OPS came in a full season)...lets wait till Daniel Murphy does something before calling him a superstar that we all know he will be. Compare their minor league #'s, it's not even close. Hermida is better, and Hermida is still young enough where we can say he still has potential. You just so happen to hate him.

3. Hermida does NOT have an upper cut swing. Go look at youtube videos of Jim Edmunds, THAT'S an uppercut. Hermida may actually have the BEST line-drive plane swing on this team. Last year he did get a little out of whack, yea, but he's back to himself. Dim, go look at a replay of Hermida's HR on opening day and you tell me how he in any way, shape, or form swung with an uppercut and lofted that ball. It was a SMOKED line drive that was hit so hard it went out, just like most of his homers are. I should be a friggin' scout.

Yeah Dim you just have beef on Hermida that's O.K., But he is not a bad player he is at worst average in a home field where your Daniel Murphy probably can't do sh*t in. Once he posts an OPS over .800 i'll be impressed. Oh wait i forgot he's comming this weekend i Bet that Hermida has a better series then Murphy hell i bet Hermida has a better series then Murphy at Citi Field to.

lulz, look at his outs. Look at his foul balls even. Every single swing this season and towards the end of last season, he hasn't had a level swing. Hanley has a level swing, Boner has a level swing, Cantu has a level swing, Cody has a level swing, Baker has a level swing, Hermida is right now trying to hit everything out of the park.

Look, Hermida comes out of games late for one reason - that's what the manager thinks will give the team the best chance of winning. It's not a knock on Hermida, there just happens to be a better defender (in the eyes of the guy they pay to make that choice) available. Half a season from now when JH has some time in left field under his belt this may not be the case (he's also got to learn left in every other park the Marlins visit so there's a learning curve in play here) but for the time being Gonzalez is playing the odds.

This is not a replay of last season when Gonzalez benched him, this is an everyday defensive move made all over the league and has little if anything to do with the individual. Personally, I'm more worried about his bat than his glove. He was really hot early and then cooled down around the third week in March and hasn't got it going yet in '09. Unless he starts hitting Fredi very well may sit him down again but he's got a while to start hitting before anything that extreme happens. A decent weekend series and he'll be fine.

I actually wanted us to go out and sign a guy like Garrett Anderson this offseason in case Hermida fails, but we don't have that kind of guy to back up. I'm personally hoping Raynor gets really hot in the minors and earns his way to the starting spot midseason.

There's no reason to be snide. Your third post ("Well this thread has officially turned into a joke.") came off as if you were mocking every one that had posted before you. You cannot pick up diction on the internet, and with how things had transpired up to that point, I came to that conclusion, and I even appologized in my post if it came off aggresively. And quite frankly, the fact you come back with a sarcastic post backs that up all the more. But I digress as it doesn't really matter, as now you know what our defense is like, so woo.

To paraphrase Nny, no need to be a dick. We were just trying to help you understand something you obviously didn't know.

Let's not mince words or delude ourselves.

Hermida is an awful defensive player.

Maybe one day the wonder-boy will fulfill his offensive production potential but I've given up on him ever coming close to being anything better than a poor defensive player. If he even reaches that level.

He comes out of games late...smart move by Fredi....as the classic late-inning defensive move.
