April 10, 200917 yr Question...Why is Carroll replacing Hermida late in games? Surly Hermida can't be as bad on D as Cody Ross is... I also understand giving Carroll some playing time cause he had a good spring, he deserves it..etc.. but why take out Hermida over Ross? Is it Hermida's bat? Carroll isnt nearly in Hermidas league in batting either.... I suspect Hermida is possibly on the fringe with the Marlins Brass and coaching staff...If the fish tail off in mid june/july..I believe that both Uggla and Hermida are out.
April 10, 200917 yr Cody Ross is one of the best defensive outfielders in all of baseball. Hermida is pretty average, maybe slightly above.

Hermida is worse than Cody. Most players are worse than Cody. Last year Cody was the 5th best CF in all of baseball defensively.
April 10, 200917 yr Well, Rabb has a reputation for making stuff like this up... so you'll have to take my word for it :shifty
April 10, 200917 yr Carroll/Maybin/Cody gives us one of if not the best defensive OFers any MLB team can trot out (Only team I can think of who you can argue better is Seattle with Chavez/Guiterezz/Ichiro, but there might be others).
April 10, 200917 yr Well this thread has officially turned into a joke. While I was kidding about Rabb, the we're all very serious about the defensive prowess of our outfield. They are all VERY good collectively.
April 10, 200917 yr No joke. Cody Ross was 5th by The Fielding Bible's +/- metric last season. If errors are your thing, he's only made 5 errors since 2007, with only 1 in all of last year. He has good glovework, a nice arm, fantastic instinct and takes ridiculously good routes. He also sets himself (or gets set) very well in the field before plays.
April 10, 200917 yr Well this thread has officially turned into a joke. Brett Carroll is, by both the numbers and scouting, a plus plus defender. His calling card is his arm, which has ranked by Baseball America as the top arm in the system for several years running now and is one of the best in all of baseball, and he also has good range. He projects to have a ~20-30 UZR/150, which is obscene. Hermida doesn't come closer to Carroll, period. And as far as the arguement of Carroll/Maybin/Cody being probably the best OF defense in all of baseball. Maybin is, by both the numbers and scout, a plus plus defender. Dude was ranked our best defensive OFer by Baseball America this season and would have last season but he was a Tiger at the time. I mean, the accelodets of his defense in the scouting community is obscene. He has a career UZR/150 of over 50 in CF, which is seriously in legendary status. Now it's only in 109 innings and will likely fall down to the 30 range, but we're still talking about one of the best defensive OFers. And the fun of it all is he's a still a bit rough around the edges, yet is already one of the best. Cody Ross is by scouting a plus to plus plus defender, and by the numbers a plus plus defender. He was rated as a "good" defender by Baseball America as a prospect, and has greatly improved since then. He doesn't have the arm power of Maybin/Carroll, but he's still about average there. He is not speedy but he takes all the right routes, more importantly he doesn't do anything stupid. He had the highest UZR/150 of any CFer with atleast 850 innings played. At 18.1. In other words, you can make the argument he was the best defensive starting CFer last season. That number will ofcoarse go up as a corner OFer. That is likely why you think Cody is a bad defender lol. He doesn't do anything that "looks" special. He doesn't do the diving plays or such. He makes everything look routine. But doesn't that just tell you how f***ing good he is when he makes everything look routine? I'm not sure what the joke is and I really don't see how any argument can be made otherwise. Scouts, who are payed top dollar for their opinion, don't agree with you. Numbers, which show you what happened on the field, don't agree with you. I appologize if this post comes a little aggresively, but OF defense is one of our top strong suits, so you insulting it makes not much sense.
April 10, 200917 yr Nny he means his original post now seems silly. (or at least I think that's what he meant)

I think he just assumed Cody was a bad fielder because he threw the ball into the dugout in the last game.

Defensive replacements late in the game are intended to help maintain a lead when defense is more important than offense. Carroll is a much better outfielder than Hermida, specially since this is the first time Hermida has played left field. They did the same with Jacobs last year by taking Jacobs out, moving Cantu to first and placing Helms at third.
April 10, 200917 yr A good example is the catch Brett Carroll made to end the game on Wednesday. He made it harder than it should of been however what do u think the chances are that Hermida would have made that play?
April 10, 200917 yr I also don't know what Cody was thinking with that throw to 1st, but if someone was covering, it would have been a close play. I take it as an early season mistake. I'm sure Cody wouldn't continue to make those mistakes throughout the season.
April 10, 200917 yr Cody's error Wednesday was an early season mental mistake, it had nothing to do with being a "bad" defender.
April 10, 200917 yr I think we're all preaching to the choir at this point. Cody, Maybin, and Carroll are very good or better. Hermida is not as good. Done.

No chance hermi makes that play If he dosen't hesitate like Carrol did then anyone can make that play easily even Hermida who can make diving catches of his own once in a while
April 10, 200917 yr A good example is the catch Brett Carroll made to end the game on Wednesday. He made it harder than it should of been however what do u think the chances are that Hermida would have made that play? No chance hermi makes that play zero, zip, nada-bottom of the ninth down 7-6.
April 10, 200917 yr Cody's error Wednesday was an early season mental mistake, it had nothing to do with being a "bad" defender. I actually believe the error was finally cresdited to Cantu. And even if it wasn't the mental lapse was Cantu's. Even if the throw was coming home, Cantu wouldn't have been the cut off man in that situation, so to me that's on him.
April 10, 200917 yr Hermida is coming out late in games because Carroll is on the team until Amezega comes back. Not using Carroll as a defensive replacement would be criminal.

Maybe Hermida wouldn't have taken one step back, split second hesitated, taken three steps to his left, and then gone forward and to the right to make the catch. Carroll made it harder than it had to be.
