4/20 Post Game

Featured Replies

I reserve hope for him, a lot of hope, and believe in the hype about Maybin. Not a 13 game bad start can stop my enthusiasm :cool

Let us not forget the tear he went on when he got called up last Sept.

Interesting enough, as of tonight, he has two more ABs than during Sept. So we shall see what the future holds.

What bothers me tonight is only 1 walk.

Ohlendorf threw 53 strikes out of 91 pitches. Not bad, put 58% strikes isn't spectacular. They gotta draw some walks, even if they are not hitting the ball hard. Just one game though. I'll keep it in mind but hope it doesn't continue.

90, ugh I know he can throw much harder. The way he's pitching reminds me of olsen, average fastball and tons of changes. At least last game I saw him pitch. At least olsen had some control.

My exact thoughts. Olsen "improved" in '07 because of his pretty ERA, so they decide to Olsenize Miller.

Fredi now saying his lost velo is because of his injury, which makes me happier since it seems the fo/wiley/fredi/whoever isn't telling him to drop his velo.

Velo was still way down

90.35 average FB velo according to PitchFX, and that's higher than it really was because it confuses some of his change ups with fast balls since they have similar movement so it's probably under 90.

How do you figure? Do you think they are calling some of his fastball as change-ups? And why would the likelihood of the reverse not be similarly as high, namely that they call a [slower] changeup as a fastball, lowering his [recorded] average FB speed?

Some fast balls are being called change ups (his fastest "change up" clocked in at 89 MPH), but your right that the reverse could be true aswell. One of the things they check for when categorizing pitches is velocity which is why I didn't think they'd label a low 80 pitch a FB, but then again you have a 89 MPH "change up", so, yeah.

well, i missed the game and i'm kind of happy i did by the looks of the boxscore. miller needs more time in the minors to work on his pitches and location. i'd love pedro at this point but a more realistic solution would be from our farm system.

It seems theres some force around PNC park that gives the team a bad vibe because we never play well in Pittsburgh.

We are 5-5 in PNC since 2006.

(Yes, I will just keep repeating this until I find a reason to do otherwise.)

I WANT MY A-HOLE OF THE GAME VOTE!

It's a tie with Miller and Kensing.

Nope. It's Baker. Couldn't block anything in the dirt, called a lousy game, and never made the pitchers even attempt to hold runners.

While the struggles of Andrew Miller are concerning, I find it more worrying that we only got 2 hits off Ross Ohlendorf in 7 innings.

On a positive note, both Hanley and Bonifacio has some pretty nice defensive plays early on in the game.

I'm still angry about Hanley and Uggla's lack of testicular fortitude. They're supposed to be the leaders on this team. The All-Stars making the big bucks. I'm not talking about the loss yesterday, they've been absent the whole week. They show no focus or motivation. Hanley can't even be bothered to know the count when he's up to bat.

If this goes on it will be interesting to see how Fredi handles it.

Agreed wholeheartedly! I've been saying this (about Hanely for the most part) to anyone who will listen. He's been playing lazy and seems to not really give a sh*t. It's frustrating to watch!

I still hate the fact that the second youngest guy on the team, just because he has talent, is expected to have the maturity to be the leader.

Well, when the Marlins give a guy a 5-year, $70 million deal, they're probably expecting more than just strong play on the field.

I'm not saying he has to be George Patton or anything, just play like he gives a sh*t. He was pretty fired up when they told him to cut his hair. Let's show some of that intensity on the field.

Yeah, eventually. But they aren't thick either.

Bob, friend. You yourself have said that runners run on pitchers, not the catcher. You yourself claimed that you saw some in the dugout calling the game for Baker before. Regardless, I don't think Baker called for miller to throw only balls. Baker could have called whatever he wanted, none of it would have mattered. What happened last night had ZERO to do with Baker.

I don't know what your problem is with Baker. You are going against your own baseball theories just to go at him. When he does something well, it's the pitchers and the bench coach. When something goes wrong, it's all on Baker.

Oh, and those wild pitches were pathetic. Not on him at all.

That's good. B/c I don't give a rats ass about your opinion either. I really don't understand your hate on Baker, which you've had since last year.

Pretty sure Baker wasn't telling Miller to not throw a strike.

Also hilarious how this wasn't brought up when we had won 11 of 12 & 7 straight.

When is it the pitcher's fault?

The first one is only partially true. The second is open. Baker hasn't been looking to the dugout as much as in the past.

Baker called a bad game. Never said he was calling for balls. But when you see a pitcher dosen't have control on a certain pitch why keep calling for it? Especially ones that end up in the dirt and you can't keep them in front of you. And a catcher does have some control on throws to keep runners honest. Signal a throw to the base if the pitcher isn't watching. Go out to the mound and reming him to keep an eye on the runners. When a catcher goes to the mound he isn't talking about which restaurant they are going to later.

And no on my outlook on Baker. I've said numerous times since towards the end of ST he is changing my mind of him defensively. Really coming around. Staying down on pitches in the dirt in front of him and "swallowing" the ball up, although not so good yet side to side. And calling much better games without help from the dugout. I thought that game was just a revertion to his "old" ways. And that will happen. It's part of the learning process.

BTW I don't blame the whole thing on him. It's a team loss. Silent bats contributed just as much. But if I had to pick one player, it would be him. I'm slowly changing my view on him. I've come from thinking he was a defensive liability to thinking he at least isn't. Still like his bat and want to keep it in the lineup whenever possible. I've been giving him plenty of credit lately. Maybe you have just missed it.

Didn't say it wasn't the pitchers fault either. Just that if I had to choose one player, it would be Baker. See my above post and please try to keep up.

What pitch did Miller have control of? Also...you HAVE TO establish your fastball.

Name a pitch that Miller had control of? His fastball? No. Curveball? No. Changeup? No. Is Baker supposed to invent a pitch for Miller to throw with control? It's not even as if both wild pitches were from the same pitch type. The first was a fastball and the second was a changeup.
