Posted May 24, 200915 yr Is it just me or was that slide by Chris even dirtier than the one by Coco Crisp that caused a bench clearing brawl in 2008?
May 24, 200915 yr It was a little late, but I don't think it was dirty. His legs seemed to be going sideways, so it wasn't like he came in with high spikes.
May 24, 200915 yr Nah, he was trying to break up the DP. He was near the base so he wasnt "going after" Aki. I doubt itwas Coggie's intention to hurt Aki.
May 24, 200915 yr Yeah, not dirty. If you're turning a DP, the last thing you do is plant your foot next to the bag lol.
May 24, 200915 yr For a team that has only won 8 of last 32 games, we want to see that. It is not dirty, just very hard-nosed winning play. It was very unfortunate that Iwamura was injured, but that play happens 1,000 times a year.
May 24, 200915 yr At first I thought it was too but it wasn't dirty. He was still in the baseline and you always slide a step late when breaking up a DP. Iwamura just had way too much of the base.
May 24, 200915 yr Of course he was going after Aki,and he got him. If Aki had been on the first base side he would have slid above the base. Who's kidding who... I have no problem with the play whatsoever.
May 24, 200915 yr Not dirty at all. In fact, Iwamura deserved nothing less than what he got. It's his own fault for not coming across the bag and just planting his foot right in front of it.
May 24, 200915 yr Not dirty at all, he didn't throw up the spikes and was well within reach of second base, it was a pretty dumb move by Iwamura if you ask me.
May 24, 200915 yr The BBTN dudes said it was NOT a dirty play and Coghlan went into the Rays clubhouse to apologize. Very nice of him :thumbup .
May 25, 200915 yr Not dirty. Also the fans on hand gave Iwamura a nice round of applause as he was carted off. Much classier than you'd find in some other NL East parks (read: Citi Field and Citizens Bank Park)
May 25, 200915 yr it was a hard play but unfortunately for iwamura he was in the base path. i hope he's okay but that had to hurt
May 25, 200915 yr The play was clean. It accomplished what it intended. The injury was unintentional. The runners are supposed to go after the player turning the DP. That's why its called "breaking up the DP". The play is considered clean as long as the sliding player stays in the base path and is able to touch second base with any part of his body. Defensive players know this so they usually bail out of the path of the sliding player and only get the out at second. They risk injury when they try to complete the double play. Coghlan did nothing wrong or dirty. He is not an animal only a ballplayer doing his job.
May 25, 200915 yr Why title the thread , "he is an animal, it gave the impression it was a dirty play when it was not, just think if it was Hanley, would you still say the same.
May 25, 200915 yr As has been said, it was hard, not dirty. As long as he can reach the back and doesn't go spikes up, that's clean.
May 26, 200915 yr Theyre gonna discuss coghaln on 1st and 10 on espn 2. I bet bayless will be all over him.
May 26, 200915 yr Skip Bayless called it a disgustingly dirty play, but because that play is done everytime with the intent of taking out the player.
May 26, 200915 yr Yup according to bayless disgustingly dirty LOL. But he was really just upset about the rule you can slide outta the baseline. Hill agerd with him.
May 26, 200915 yr LF Chris Coghlan said he knew on Sunday that Akinori Iwamura would probably be out for the rest of the year. Coghlan went to the Rays clubhouse after the game to apologize for colliding with the Tampa second baseman while breaking up a double play."He was like, 'Hey, man, keep playing hard that's the way you're supposed to play.' He said, 'Good luck the rest of the year. I wish you the best.' I told him I'd be praying for him," Coghlan said. Iwamura was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season. "You never want to hurt somebody," Coghlan said. "It's an unfortunate thing. I wish him as speedy a recovery as possible."
May 26, 200915 yr Skip Bayless called it a disgustingly dirty play, but because that play is done everytime with the intent of taking out the player.  I don't know why he would single out Coghlan's play. It's done a thousand times a season and Coghlan's wasn't anywhere near as ridiculous as some are. Hutton even pointed out the very next game where someone (Utley maybe?) slid into Uggla to try & break up a DP and the guy slid a mile out of the basepaths, I mean not even remotely close to the bag. Coghlan's play was totally legit. It's on Iwa unfortunately, you leave yourself open to injury if you keep your feet planted like that.

It was more about the injury than Coghlan himself.
May 26, 200915 yr It was a clean play in that it was within the rules but Coglan's and Utley's slides were not at all comparable. Even with his feet planted Aki would be fine if Coglan had slid how Utley slid. But by body blocking him or whatever you call Coglan's slide it increases the chances of these type of injuries by like 823456134756%.
