July 6, 200917 yr First things first, I really like the chances Beinfest is taking with Ayala & Donnelly. For all the sh*t being said about our pen in the media (apparently we're in trouble now b/c we lost our "closer" Matt Lindstrom...lol?), our pen has been doing pretty well, and Kiko is expected back, Thursday. To me, we need a bat even more. However, a lot of people seem to want to trade one of our bats in order to get one, and I really don't understand how that makes us better. Anyways, I post this b/c an interesting player came to mind. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/foxja02.shtml With Aramis Ramirez coming back Monday, the Cubs have ran out of positions to play Fox. They can't put him at 1B (Derrek Lee). He has a lot of catching experience in the minors, as well, but the Cubbies have Geovany Soto there. They can't move him to the OF with Soriano locking down 1 corner OF spot, and the highly paid Milton Bradley on the other end. Fox is a decent bat with some power, and I'm sure it wouldn't cost nearly as much as some of the other names being thrown around to get him. Thoughts?
July 6, 200917 yr Well, I do like his name....but other than that, his .858 OPS is nice, although only through 77 PA. However, I don't realistically see the Marlins adding another starting position player (at least via trade). I think the organization really believes that when the time is right, Gaby will get his chance to play at 3B. Where Bonifacio will be however, is where I can't say. I feel that he would be better suited as a Utility role since he does have great speed and every now and then he'll have a decent game with the bat. Another option is that the Fish will trade Hermida and move Bonifacio to RF (like we all feared in the offseason), but that seems unlikely to me. We all pretty much know that after this season Uggla will more than likely be gone. I don't know if the team would want to keep Coghlan at LF or put him at 2B where he as originally planned to be. Until then, I don't think we'll see any radical changes in the lineup unless there's a bad injury or an unbelieveable deal that would be too stupid not to make.
July 6, 200917 yr I'm actually pretty intrigued by this idea. Any time you can get a guy who can play that many positions and can hold his own offensively, he's going to add some value to your club. He is having a good first half this year...my only beef is he isn't hitting lefties, but it's only in 25 plate appearances, AND his minor league track record indicated that he can indeed hit lefties. His minor league track record as a whole is pretty impressive.

We know what kind of production we're going to get from him. With Fox, we don't. A Mark Teahen type would also mean we'd be trading, perhaps, one of the bats in our lineup. Again, I don't see how that's not a lateral move (at least this year, that doesn't really improve the team). Fox also provides depth at a position the Marlins have very little depth in...catcher. He's cheap and say what you want about his MLB sample...but his minor league track record isn't just something to ignore. For sure, he's an offensive upgrade to what we currently have at 3B, and again...I don't see a team having to give as much in return to get him.

Not so sure I want to give up spects and get worse at defense for a 760 OPS and a little versatility. Sounds like a nice lefty reserve though.

Taking a shot in the dark here: since we all seem to be confound as for 3B to acquire other than Teahen, are there are any 1B that would do/have the things we need out there? I wouldn't mind trading for a 1B or 3B, because we all know our lineup could use a more consistent bat. However, I wouldn't have any problem with staying in house and using Gaby Sanchez at third or moving Cantu to third and starting Gload at 1st. It would save our prospects, too. Call me crazy, but for now I think we should start Gload at 1st against RHP. His OPS vs. RHP is .826. That's definitely an upgrade over Bonifacio. This is the exact same thing as John Baker hitting 2nd against RHP. It makes sense statistically, but it's like the FO or Fredi or whoever, would rather go against statistical evidence. The only thing that could be a negative about that would be swapping Cantu so much between 1B and 3B. That would probably be a burden for him, which I wouldn't want to put on him, seeing as he's definitely not the problem right now. As for Fox...how much would we realistically have to give up to get him?
July 6, 200917 yr interesting idea. i just don't know how much the cubs would want in return or how his defense would be at 3rd base. i also like the teahen idea because he'd bring in a steady bat in the lineup from the left side. my personal choice would be casey mcgehee but he's been very valuable for the brewers so they wouldn't give him up easily.
July 6, 200917 yr unfortunently I dont see the FO trading for a 3rd basemen with Gaby being "major league ready" as beinfest said. IMO if we are going to make a big run we need a more consistent bat and hopefully Gaby can provide that. One thing I am scared of if we trade Hermida is we wont have that left handed bat in the middle of the order.
July 6, 200917 yr i really like the addition of donnelly and ayala and with kiko coming back we are looking at three guys who all had the same injury and have all had continued success at the top level. they are all very similar and all have something to prove. as a matter of fact i think donnelly has gotten a pretty sh*tty end of the bargain considering when u look at his numbers.....he never really had a bad year. I have always rooted for hermida and salivate at his potential but hes just not doing it and is way too streaky. i think we trade him but i have no idea for who since we are seriously cash strapped.
July 6, 200917 yr IMO the best deal we can get is to somehow get Teahen and/or Soria without having to trade away any top prospects. Hermida is one player we can trade, and what about trading Anibal as well?
