Hypothetically what do you think it would take to get Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres?

 

I for one would love to see him in a Marlin uni and even though he was key in the trade we made in 03 I was a little upset to see him go.

I would LOVE Gonzalez, but I don't know what it would take to get him, considering he's the face of that franchise. He'd be rather pricey in the prospect bin, given his awesomeness, the rebuilding mode of the Padres, and his extremely cheap contract.

Adrian did say yesterday that he understood that the Padres might want to move him for future pieces, that being said Adrian might be getting ready to be traded. I would love to have him, I am scared about his drop in July though. He would be a huge offensive uplift, but would cantu go back to third if Adrian is sent over to Miami? I would like Hermida to be part of Any deal, so that can open up a spot for Maybin to shift into CF, Ross to RF and Coughlan stays at LF.. Hell we might be able to even give them a Hermida Uggla West package and they might bite, which would mean we would shift Coughlan to 2nd and maybe trade for an OF(Juan Pierre possibly?), but we all know that in the Florida Marlins world, this doesn't exist.

It'd take more than that, and, if Uggla were involved, he'd probably go to a third team for (an) additional prospect(s). The upside is how the salary is absolutely cleared, Coghlan or Boner can take over at 2B and so on and so forth.

 

Certainly, trading for Adrian Gonzalez would likely require either Logan Morrison or Gaby Sanchez, too. So, now, it'd likely be more like Uggla (to a third team), Hermida, West, and Gaby... plus more. You gotta remember, despite SD being out of it, they still are not forced, by any means, to trade A-Gon. And, since they're likely to trade Peavy this offseason, it's not like they won't have money to afford his already super-cheap contract.

SD has Kyle Banks, they have no reason for Gaby or Morrison

You couldn't have said that any better. SD knows, especially with Adrian Gonzalez's super cheap contract, exactly how much he's worth, and trust me, it's a lot. Teams should be salivating at the fact he's only making $3M, so they better be ready to open their pockets cuz Gonzo aint going cheap.

If you were the owner or GM in San Diego why would you take on a $10 million liability when you can spend the same money on a $10 million asset that your fans adore and is one of the faces of the franchise?

Yeah I also agree. Adrian Gonzalez has all the attributes necessary to be considered that "player" you build a team around. He can hit for average and power, is an above average infielder, and is also a fan favorite. The fact that they're willing to part ways with him is stupid to begin with.

 

BTW, do you know when A-GONZ becomes a free agent ?? The Padres should be looking to give him a long term deal and just pay him what he wants if SD wants to keep fans in the seats.

Those numbers demonstrate the type of elite potential that Stanton has.

 

And I mention elite because to me Adrian Gonzalez still hasn't really made himself elite. He's very very good, but hasn't gone off the charts yet. He's been doing the same thing the last couple of years, only with slightly less homers, and he generally slugs around .510-.520. And that's very good but it doesn't put him up there in impact with players like Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, or Albert Pujols, yet he's suddenly become the next big thing just because he hit a couple more homers this year than he usually does.

 

I know its just upside and potential, but with Stanton you're talking about the ability to slug .600 in the majors if things work out. There are few prospects that you can say that about. And I'd take that .600 SLG in RF any day over a .520 SLG 1b.

A Freakin miracle!

The Marlins need to take advantage of the present opportunity to make the playoffs. Johnson and Nolasco won't likely be around in a couple of years, (not with the Marlins) so you have to go for it now. Gonzales is the only established star that I know of that has such a modest contract. San Diego can trade him because their team, as constituted, has no chance to do anything for a few years. How about an offer of Morrison, Maybin and Bonafacio?
