Posted August 9, 200915 yr In the eighth inning of Florida's 12-3 win over Philadelphia,Marlins reliever Kiko Calero was lifted with pain in his right knee. Appearing for the first time since Aug. 4 at Washington, Calero exited after issuing a two-out walk to Chase Utley. Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez and trainer Sean Cunningham came tothe mound, and the veteran right-hander was replaced without eventesting the knee with a warmup pitch. Afterwards, Calero said he feld discomfort in the muscle area above the kneecap. "It felt weak today," said Calero, who has appeared in 47 games thisseason. "On Friday, I started feeling it. But today, there were twopitches [to Utley] where my knee felt weak. I'm fine." Calero is listed as day-to-day. In 2003, he had surgery to repair a torn right patella. Gonzalez said before of his past history with the knee area, the team is being extra cautious. Calero was on the disabled list from June 21-July 9 with right shoulder inflammation. The Marlins were hoping to avoid using Renyel Pinto on Sunday, but the lefty replaced Calero, and he retired Ryan Howard on a fly ballto right field. Calero has been used in a late-inning relief role. MattLindstrom, Brendan Donnelly, Brian Sanches and Tim Wood areright-handed setup options. Leo Nunez has been used as closer. http://joefrisaro.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/08/calero_day-to-day.html
August 9, 200915 yr Its not Freddi's fault that someone gets a little nicked up. Jesus some people will blame him for anything, and I am my no means a Freddi fan. Who were we supose to use?

Who were we supose to use? jeez i don't know, oh maybe he could have used wood for 2 innings and then sanches for 1 inning. instead he uses meyer and calero who are our 2 best relievers in a freakin blowout.
August 9, 200915 yr "It felt weak today," said Calero, who has appeared in 47 gamesthis season. "On Friday, I started feeling it. But today, there weretwo pitches [to Utley] where my knee felt weak. I'm fine." Sounds like if it is a legit problem that it did not happen today, and would have come up the next time he pitched anyway, so it certainly is not Fredi's fault. I for one do not see the problem with getting someone who hasn't pitched in 4 days some work. And after the last series against Washington, you want to do your best to make sure you win the games you are suppose to win.
August 9, 200915 yr The game wasn't that out of hand when Kiko came into the game...it was 9-3 and that lead with the top of the order coming up was not a completely comfortable one...

Getting this sweep was RIDICULOUSLY important, and after what happened that last game in Washington plus the fact that these are the Phillies in CBP, we had to try hard on this one.

These were basically my exact thought when he brought in Calero. At first, I was like, "hang on", but then I realized it was definitely the right move.
August 9, 200915 yr I still don't think it was the right move. You don't use your best relievers in a blowout. And it's not like Sanches, Wood, or Donnelly are scrubs. They could have gotten the job done.

IMO, it's not a blowout at that ballpark against that line-up, despite a 6-run lead. And this game was so uber-important that we shouldn't have been taking any risks whatsoever. And he also hadn't pitched singe August 4th, so I didn't mind him getting the work, to boot.
August 9, 200915 yr Calero had pitched 0.1 innings in the past week so I'm absolutely fine with him being put in today

Like they did against Washington. First game against the Nationals, we had a 4 run lead, not a 8 run lead. Third game, Tim wood came in when the score was 8-5. 3 Run lead, not an 8 run lead. And Luis Ayala was the one who was resposible for that loss. There was no reason for the Fredi to use Kiko Calero or Dan Meyer. I know Kiko Calero was on 4 days rest, but that shows how bad Fredi is. It's his fault he's on 4 days rest. He shouldn't be on 4 days rest. He should have been used in the Nats series when the games were close.
August 10, 200915 yr this forum is fool of criticisim. I cant believe you guy's find a way to be mad after sweeping the phillies. Come on guys leave fredi alone dude. I think he is a great manager and he's only getting better. The guy is doing a heck of a job with what he has, Cut the guy some slack.

Freddi blows, but it wasn't a bad call to give some work to Calero considering he hadn't pitched enough recently.

They could have gotten the job done. At first I was ??? Then I realized how much smarter you two are than everyone else. Heck, we should have had Cody pitch in that situation. The guy hasn't pitched in 4 days, why get him some work in when he could very obviously go another couple days sitting? Aren't you the same guys that think Leo should pitch in every save opportunity even if he is waaaaay beyond what he has ever done before? "Calling Dr Andrews. Calling Dr Andrews. The Marlins board wants to buy you a new yacht."

But you don't think Fredi and the rest of the coaching staff knew that? Or do you think they should have used him because they knew they could blow out that surgically repaired knee and just gotten the problem out in the open so we could bring up some unproven to replace him? These type of responses is why I don't listen to sports talk radio. People that one day hope to be assistant coaches for a T-ball team making comments showing why they haven't even gotten that opportunity yet. Look past your own ego. If you can.
August 10, 200915 yr As I previously said, but nobody picked up on it, prior to yesterday, Calero had only pitched 0.1 innings in the past week. Guys need work to prevent getting rusty, so I thought it was perfectly acceptable to put in Calero yesterday.
