August 12, 200915 yr It's not about calming Volstad down....he's pitching like garbage and going to talk to him is not going to change that. The bullpen is gonna get burned because our other excellent starter VandenHurk can't go deep into games either...

[/quo what?the fact that he has a struggling pitcher out there and he doesnt go to the mound to at least calm volstad down or buy some time and bring some fu..... new pitcher in? Well, it's just the title was hard to comprehend, so I didn't get it. As for not taking Volstad out...I'm not blaming Fredi tonight. The bullpen has thrown a lot of innings lately. At some point, a starter not named Josh Johnson or Ricky Nolasco has to step up, and give the team 6-7 innings. Bottom line. Plus, despite struggles...it was a 2-1 game in the 5th. I doubt any manager would've taken Volstad out, at that point.

August 12, 200915 yr Yep, this is all on Volstad. The last two starts he has pitched like crap. He better square his ass away soon because we won't be making the postseason like this.

August 12, 200915 yr you can only visit the mound once in an inning. the second time you have to pull the pitcher.
August 12, 200915 yr Volstad's last few starts have not been very impressive. It's beginning to look like a problem, and August is the worst time for him to be struggling. Maybe he's pitched too much?
August 12, 200915 yr Rip on Fredi all you want but Houston's manager has looked pretty bad so far. Yeah, Houston's manager has made more than a few head scratching moves. I mean, who the hell intentionally walks someone with two outs to get to Hanley? Makes no sense. He also intentionally walked Gload to get to Coghlin. These moves are baffling.

He's going with "gut" feelings no doubt, but so far it seems like the guy might be constipated.
August 12, 200915 yr Rip on Fredi all you want but Houston's manager has looked pretty bad so far. Coop is terrible. Many Stros fans still can't believe them replaced Gardner for that fool.

Maybe he's pitched too much? I thought I'm one of the few optimistics around. Beginning to look like a problem? Imo we already have a problem there, too young and inexperienced, even naive, and he looks very tired, I'm not sure he can take the pressure any longer. But I don't blame him though, he's been subjected to an unnecessary punishment. To me, that "keeping the starter for as long as possible because the bullpen is overworked" philosophy it's just crap. Starters are as human as relieves, the last ones work one or two innings (Sometimes less!) while the starters are kept for 6 or 7 innings even if they're bombarded. Furthermore, if you keep your opener untill the team is 5, 6, (Fredi's magic number) or 7 runs down, chances are you are going to lose the game, specially when your team is not producing. Deja vu?
August 12, 200915 yr you can only visit the mound once in an inning. the second time you have to pull the pitcher. and if you visit twice during the same batter, the pitcher and the manager are ejected, the pitcher being allowed to finish the at bat ... sorry, that's like, my favorite rule

But my rule is IF YOU WIN DON'T COMPLAIN. If It worked then Freddy is doing something right that being his job to manage good enough to win the game.

Just because you won a game doesn't mean you made the right moves. Yes, ultimately it worked out, but you theoretically could have saved some trouble. Like, if Im driving from Fort Pierce to LandsharkDolphinRobbie stadium, but I get off I95 in West Palm Beach, yes, I can still get there, but I could have done it a lot better and opened myself to criticism.

I'm sorry my friend, but I've seen that movie too many times, specially with Volstad, if it was a 2-1 game in the 5th it was pure luck, and it is not the first time. What i doubt though is that any manager would not send a couple of pitchers to warm up since the third inning just in case, that waiting/keeping philosophy has costed us a lot of games already, some with Volstad. If your main purpose is to win games you cannot bet on the offense when your team is leaving 10 or more men on bases per game and take so many runs against. As far as the bullpen, why can't they throw one inning a day? Try to win today's game my friend, tomorrow we'll see... how to win it too!

Releivers for the most part are supposed to be able to pitch everyday. If you start throwing your releivers out there for more than 1 or 2 innings a day you will run out of relievers real fast.

What was luck was Tejada high bouncer on a good pitch that happened to bounce over third basemans head that would have been a double play home to first.
