Smoltzie could be a Fish...

Don't know about the rest of you, but I think volstad could benefit from a couple weeks back in the minors. Ungs has been very hot for Jacksonville for 4 consecutive starts. He deserved a shot at helping the Marlins too.

Ah yes, the 29 year old career minor leaguer who couldn't cut it in AAA. That's the ticket.

We just enjoy collecting ancient artifacts. You know we are low-budget, so what do low budget people do? We buy from thrift stores. We get those same docker pants your doctor wheres and buy em used, and they end up looking great. Same thing with Smoltz, he sucked for them, he will turn it around with us! :whistle

Maybe when they still have something left in the tank, like Benitez, Todd Jones, Brendan Donnelly, Joe Nelson, etc.

But Smoltz clearly can't pitch well anymore. I had expected he would have retired last year after that injury when he was pitching against us.

If the Red Soxs aren't willing to trade him to a contender in the AL then that probably means they think he can come back and pitch well so he'd probably be dealt to an NL Team.

I'd love to see what he can do with us, either as a spot starter or long relief man in the bullpen but he could probably mentor our young pitchers and hopefully helping them become better and smarter pitchers.

If he's coming cheap we should might as well give it a shot, I'd take him as a starter over Esteban Yan any day.

I agree. Nothing else Smoltz would be a great leader to the younger pitchers.

Marlins trying to land John Smoltz?

The Florida Marlins have joined the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers on the list of teams that are supposedly after Boston Red Sox vet John Smoltz(notes), according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Smoltz has already passed through waivers and told the Boston Red Sox that he isn't going to the minors or the bullpen so the team can now trade him or release him. Boston has till Sunday to trade him.

Smoltz is apparently a pal of current Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez and wouldn't mind returning to the National League East, where he knows the teams inside and out. That might help him do better than he did in Boston, where he is 2-5 and has an 8.33 ERA.

Volstad has nothing to gain by being back in the minors.

Ungs has pitched well...finally... but who knows if he's finally put it together or just the baseball gods smiling on him? I don't think anyone is against him succeeding but to say he's "deserves" anything may be overreaching a bit.

On Smoltz the more I look at his gamelog the less affection I have for the possible acquisition. About the only positive is his work against right-handed hitters and I'm not sure that's enough to earn him a roster spot. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

BTW, the Red Sox just got Alex Gonzalez, "our" Alex Gonzalex from Cincy.

Hell yea I want him. Get him back in the NL and hopefully we can catch a bottle with lightning, as my dad says. If we make the playoffs, Lord knows I would rather have Smoltzie, arguably the best big game pitcher ever, pitching over Volstad, Hurk or West... no offense to the guys. I just think the failure to add a veteran SP has been a glaring hole since the beginning of the year.

Deja vu all over again. We sent him to the Sox after '05.

He must belong there, as no one else on the planet seems to be able to play short for them. How many have they gone through? About 10 guys in the last few years?

:lol

I wouldn't mind Ungs, other than we'd probably have to clear a 40-man roster spot for him (or do we still have one spot open?). He pitched in the independent leagues after flaming out here and seems to have come back with better results. He is certainly pitching better at AA than some of the other guys we've brought up from there this year.

I don't want any of those guys either. It's not about is it better to replace a guy with Ungs than Koronka, it's is it worth it to replace Volstad with Ungs. And it isn't.

Oh, I'm not advocating replacing Volstad with Ungs; but if something came up and the rotation needed him, I'd rather see him spot start than some of the other guys we've brought up.

Ungs... someone refresh me. That name sounds like a blast from the past... like 4 years ago past?

I'm not sure about the exact mechanism let me say that upfront, but from what I've read Sunday was the final day for the Red Sox to move Smoltz one way or the other.

It's now Monday. I would have to believe he is no longer a member of the Red Sox as of this morning (or maybe it's noon today, or some other time certain) and a free agent, and it won't take long for him to make a decision where he's going or what his next step will be.

edit: shortly after posting the above in Boston Herald it is written, "...By 2 pm today, the clock will run out on the Red Sox' attempt to trade John Smoltz. If they are unable to, the Sox must release the veteran right-hander, ...".

Hes been released according to MLBTR. I heard on the MLBN that he's has great numbers the first time through lineups so he'd def be a good BP option at the least if not better than RVH or West in the rotation.

I'm surprised the Smoltz topic hasn't gotten more attention. I think it would be an absolutely wonderful move to add the vet to this young staff for the stretch run.
