August 21, 200916 yr What goes on in Boston really is unfair to the rest of baseball. Theo has, like, no restraints and can just do whatever he wants. And I'm not just talking about money. The other things along with the money are what makes Boston head and shoulders above any organization in baseball. other than the Yankees...I mean they spent nearly $400 million I believe on Texiera, Burnett and Sabathia alone. They can throw money around like tissue paper, and the Yankees name makes it extremely enticing for players to want to join. I'd say the Yankees still rule supreme The Yankees aren't nearly as good at it as the Sox are. It's borderline infuriating.

But yeah, overall they make the smartest decisions. But you can't honestly tell me that the Yankees didn't show they are still the dominant baseball brand when they got the top 3 free agents this offseason long term, and look at the results, they are leading the Red Sox atm. If the Yankees win this year, they have the core of their team wrapped down for many years (Jeter, A-Rod, Burnett, Sabathia, Texiera, etc...). They even have a very good young core of Garner, Chamberlain, Hughes, Cano. I feel the Yankees are more infuriating than the Red Sox.

Theo is a very smart man. Money certainly plays one of the bigger parts, though, and that's the main reason they have such a good farm system.

They just throw that around however they want. It's about their player development. It's about trades. Everything just works out swimmingly.

The only thing the yankees do are pay given big contract to big named free agents. Maybe the new steinbrenner will be better, I don't really pay that much attention, but George needed to have his hand in everything was bad for the organization. That's one of things I'm talking about with Theo, he can just do whatever he wants. I mean, look at toronto. Owner makes JP sign vernon wells. Tons of instances like this with owners around baseball. But boston and Johnny Damon, Pedro Martinez, ect? Cast them aside, they aren't worth the price. as h2r brought up boston beats them badly in scouting and system, all the low risk high reward moves they make, all the small stuff they do that is the difference. Signing big name FAs is the tits and ass of running a baseball team but it's everything combined that is what makes a difference
August 21, 200916 yr They can spend all the money they want. If they don't spend it wisely, it's irrelevant.
August 22, 200916 yr Remember Carl Pavano? And how about Nick Swisher making nearly 6 mil? Are you saying Nick Swisher is being overpaid? He's got a .851 OPS.
August 22, 200916 yr Well when George did have his hand in everthing the yanks won 3 straight WS. So he did something right. Though I beleive Torre kept him out of a lot of day to day decsions.

August 22, 200916 yr Remember Carl Pavano? And how about Nick Swisher making nearly 6 mil? Are you saying Nick Swisher is being overpaid? He's got a .851 OPS. Wow. I could have sworn he was doing worse than that. See, this is why you should check before making statements. Look away folks, nothing to see here.

The only average/below average hitter the Yankees have in their everyday lineup is Melky Cabrera.

And they acquired him in a trade for like one pretty good pitching prospect and a whole lot of nothing. That's the kind of stuff that scares me. If both the Yankees and Red Sox have good management. Ugh..
August 22, 200916 yr Even if not to close, it would have been nice to get Wagner to have a LHP who can actually get out LHBs, since the Fredi & co insist on using Meyer and Pinto in these cookie-cutter situations forgetting the reality that both are more effective against RHBs, even in comparison to the RHPs in our bullpen.

It's very important to note that Meyer is damn good against LHB, meaning we have a LHP that can actually get LHB out. They are only hitting .228/.295/.392 off him. I mean, I wanted a LOOGY via trade as well but too many people have been bringing up his awesomeness vs RHB in saying that he shouldn't been seeing so many LHB.

I mean, his being damn good against LHB just means that you can feel free to use him against them. And, you can still leave him in after to face the RHB, which is an awesome luxury. Or you can use him in a tight spot vs. non-LHB just because he's a really good RP. But the idea of using him merely as a specialist is what's silly and should be avoided.
August 22, 200916 yr As much as I'm never comfortable with him and most people dislike him, Pinto hasn't been bad against lefties, either. We have 2 lefties that can get both lefties and righties out. Only problem is that Pinto walks more guys; that being the reason a lot of people (including myself) get frustrated when he pitches.

Lefties are getting on base at a ridiculous clip this year against Pinto, a .380 OBPA. Strangely enough, besides Meyer, none of our lefties (SP or RP) have been any good against lefties.

As I said though, the problem is the walks. In terms of hitting him, lefties are slugging more against Meyer than they are against Pinto. Also...that Houston game must've hurt Pinto a bit. Just checking now, his .OPS against lefties is .733, which is weird b/c it was in the high 600's not so long ago. Still though, the .239 .opponents average/.352 slugging is acceptable. He just needs to cut the crap with the walks.

But what I'm saying is that, it's not as if lefties hit him hard. He doesn't get hit hard, period. But he walks way too many people, which is the reason for his high WHIP/low ERA.

I agree, but you can't say that unequivocally. Part of the reason for the low BA and SLG may be that people are more likely to take pitches and try and work a walk and a free base. In fact, that should be what most batters are doing. It's a good strategy against Pinto to be patient and hope he gives you the free base. If this changed and he started throwing more strikes, hitters would likely be more aggressive and possible raise their BA and SLG vs Pinto.

I mean, there are relievers that walk a lot of guys, and get hit hard, as well (Lindstrom). I'd like to see what would happen, though, if he stopped walking so many guys. I mean, he'd probably be one of the best relievers in baseball if he'd get his head out of his ass with the walks. I do get what you mean though with the effectively wild thing. Could be. A lot of people say this is the case with Carlos Marmol.
August 22, 200916 yr It's easier said than done for Pinto to stop walking batters. Honestly, I think he is that kind of pitcher, and will always be that kind of pitcher. He's 27, so I don't see his control getting any better.
