Volstad and Sanchez Sent Down

Featured Replies

We really need another starter. We are letting this season get away. Hope we get Penny

awesome that he was sent down!

tired of him failing

Gaby Sanchez is also going down to New Orleans. I don't get it, Volstad has been bad, but it isn't like we have the luxury of good starting pitching to call up.

Yeah, watch. When they call VandenHurk up now, and he gets his tits ripped, people are going to want him down, too. It's turning into a never-ending cycle, all of the sudden.

Yeah, most likely scenario is Rick VandenHurk is called up, who didn't show he deserved a starting spot.

As for the other person called up, I can't say. I mean Gaby was our last 1B/3B left on the 40 man roster not already on the team. The only other person on the 40 who isn't an outfield is Brett Hayes, seems like he may be up to give Baker some rest possibly. Hell anything is possible.

Gotta pick up either Harden or Penny!

Marlins need experienced pitchers for the stretch drive....

If its Vandenhurk again, im throwing in the towel!!! he blows worse than Volstad

Btw, I'm guessing this is temporary and both guys are called up soon, anyways. We're a couple of days away from September.

Penny is horrible. If you think he's going to be any better than the guys we have, we're in trouble.

I think the front office realizes that we are in trouble. If this team falls out of contention early like it looks like they might, I hope they shut down Volstad and Johnson for the rest of the year.

Exactly. I'm thinking Wood / LeRoux might be called up to help the pen over the next few days. I wouldn't read too much into this (unfortunately).

I hope they don't. As Tommy Hutton was saying, that's part of the problem with pitchers, nowadays. Sooner or later, they're going to have to get used to pitching this many innings.

Vandenhurk hasn't been ready to come back up but between him and Volstad it's a toss up maybe we'll get lucky?

But if they are at the point where they are worn down, there's a much greater chance for injury. Taking that risk...is not good.

How do we know they're worn down? Just b/c they're not pitching well? In Josh Johnson's case...b/c he had a bad start in Houston the start before last, showing his human side?

I may sound like a dick, but I think the season is over. Unless, this FO pulls something out of their ass.

who calling up? will this be bullpen help or starter??

I'm guessing 2 relievers are being called up, actually.

I kina really started to feel like this tonight, as well, for the first time this season. I mean, if they win the next 2 and take 3 or 4 from the Braves, then maybe not, but I just don't see them competing with...........

(cue dead horse beating....................)

An extremely inconsistent starting rotation.

After the game, the Marlins optioned Volstad and infielder Gaby Sanchez to Triple-A New Orleans. They will recall two pitchers to reinforce a spent bullpen.

"We always talk about mound presence with him and composure, and we haven't seen that," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "That's not a good sign, but he'll get that backÂ…It's not the same kid we've seen."

For the fourth time in five outings, Volstad failed to complete five innings. Friday marked the shortest outing of his career as the Padres tagged him for six runs on six hits in the second.

Three of the first four batters he faced reached on extra-base hits, including Kyle Blanks on a two-run bomb over the 434-foot sign in the Bermuda Triangle. That was the 27th home run Volstad has allowed, tying him with Josh Geer for second most in the National League behind Braden Looper (32).

"I wasn't doing my job," Volstad said. "I haven't been doing it for a couple of weeks I guess. That's the way it goes. You have to perform."

After watching Volstad walk the ninth and 10th Padres batters of the inning, Gonzalez yanked him. It's been a forgettable month for Volstad, who in five August starts went 1-2 with a 9.61 ERA.

In his first full big league season, Volstad isn't suffering from physical fatigue. He's still 23 innings shy of the 175 1/3 he totaled between the minors and majors in 2008.

"I don't feel tired when I run out there," Volstad said. "Maybe mentally I'm trying to tell myself that and really I am. I don't know."

Burke Badenhop struck out six over 3 1/3 scoreless innings in what should be his last rehab outing Friday for Class-A Jupiter. He could make a spot start in Volstad's rotation spot Wednesday.

The Marlins also have been linked to Brad Penny, who likely will clear release waivers Monday. He's becoming a more viable option as Marlins' starters continue to struggle getting deep into games. Volstad's outing makes 12 in 25 August contests in which a starter hasn't completed five innings.

As a result, the bullpen opened the weekend having totaled 419 innings, tied with the Astros for third most in the NL behind the Padres (460 1/3) and the Dodgers (440 1/3).
