August/Year Position Player Roundup

If the budget is $40 million then trade Cantu, Uggla and Hermida and don't resign N. Johnson. Uggla is the only good player out of the four and none of them would "outperform" those salaries.

I have to disagree with you, mystikol. I would rather have Cantu for 6 million than NJ. Cantu can net us two draft picks when he hits FA. I'm not so sure NJ can.

Also, If Cantu leaves, who plays third base for the Marlins? Keeping him, we can plug Gaby Sanchez at first base, and if he struggles, Morrison can take over in June. If we keep NJ, third base will be open. And that will give the FO a chance to start Bonifacio again.

We're also assuming here Cantu would decline arbitration post 2010. Which is probably likely because if he's even half good in 2010 he should be able to get a 2-3 year deal minimum on the open market, but there is still a risk associated with that. But I do agree with you. It's worth that risk. We need 3B help. We have Gaby/Logan ready to go basically, so we should keep Cantu and hope for the draft picks. Or, it would be nice if they did something like trade Hermida for Andy LaRoche, or whoever else, and drastically lower team payroll by getting another sufficient stopgap for 3B.

So you want to do this.

C Baker

1B Logan

2B Uggla

SS Hanley

3B Gaby/Bonifacio

LF Coghlan

CF Maybin

RF Carroll/Bonifacio

Not a very good idea. They should keep one of Ross/Hermida and one of Cantu/Johnson. Need more veterans. Not just Uggla.

I don't necessarily disagree, and the draft picks are important. Less so if we are going to be in the habit of drafting people based on signability and price rather than talent, but if we're willing to spend then the two picks from Type-A compensation would be quite nice. Certainly the 3rd base problem looms largest, and I mentioned the drawbacks in my post. I think that you can only re-sign NJ if you either acquire a legit 3B (like LaRoche) or the FO feels Gaby can handle 3B. But I doubt they feel that way. I personally have no idea if he can handle 3B 140 games a year. If he can't, then yeah, keep Cantu over NJ (and it's really not close).

How good is Coghlan at 3B?

If he can play it, I'd rather have Nick Johnson and his great .OBP, over Cantu.

1. Maybin-CF

2. Coghlan-3B

3. NJ-1B

4. Hanley-SS

5. Morrison-LF

6. Cody-CF

7. Baker/Paulino-C

8. Pitcher

9. Bonifacio-2B

...would be my lineup.

Not much of a basis, but in 2008 he made 5 errors in 10 games at 3B, in 2006 he made 6 errors in 21 games, and this year he had 1 error in 11 games.

Might I add, Bonifacio starting again? Really? I mean he obviously is MUCH better as a utility guy.

Here is my lineup

1. CF Maybin

2. 3B Coghlan

3. SS Ramirez

4. 1B Johnson

5. C Baker/Paulino

6. 2B Orlando Hudson/Mark Derosa (my favorite choices at 2B free agency).

7. RF Ross

8. LF Morrison

And again, this is all under what you are hoping for (which is Coghlan 3B and Johnson staying at 1B). My scenario is different, but the one posted above would probably be what you (Erick) would want to root for.

I don't know if getting a big free agent name is realistic, at all.

Anyways, I'd rather have Bonifacio play 2B than Gaby play 3B. I'm not a big Gaby Sanchez fan.

If anything the FO showed this year it would be Boni that starts

I could see Gaby Sanchez starting next season at first base, especially if NJ leaves. We can start Sanchez, and let Logan Morrisson play in Triple A for till maybe June. If Gaby is playing well, you obviously leave him there, and if he is struggling, you call up Morrisson.

As a side note, I am out of town and did not get to the pitcher's. It'll have to be a next week thing as that is going to take awhile with all the year end relievers of interest.

Might as well wait till NOLA ends at this point.

Why does Logan need to play in New Orleans? Does he need work on...defense...hitting...on what? Beinfest has stated that progression through the minors is on an indiviual basis. If Logan rakes in spring he will be on the 25 man roster and likely starting at 1st base unless he is placed in the Outfield again

If we wait till June we prevent him from being a Super 2.

Nail, hammer, head.

Plus, there is no harm in letting him play in Triple A. It can only benefit him.

Morrison can probably accomplish more playing Winter Ball than he would playing in New Orleans. I agree, if he is ready he makes the 25 man roster... If he is not, a return to Jacksonville is a much better option development-wise. The object of a Major League Baseball team is to put your best players on the field.

Not really a benefit. If you are going to stash him until June, leave him in AA so he can continue to face better pitching.

Oh. My. God.

Seriously, do you read when other people discuss things with you? Honestly. You keep saying this and it's absolutelyu ridiculous, come on!

Coghlin had 94 Triple A ABs this season with an AVG of .344. I question if those 94 ABs made a whole hell of a difference in the player he is now... He actually probably was ready to face ML pitching, and got better playing everyday in the Majors

Well, that wasn't even the argument being made. The argument was, if he's staying in the minors, there's no point to putting him in AAA and that we should just leave him in AA.

If Morrison is successful in his at-bats in Spring Training come March, I truly think he deserves to make the team. Anytime a young hitter has the K:BB rates that Morrison has, it's impressive. The power will come. But the fact that he's showing great plate recognition this year, is a great sign. Coghlan was the same type of player in the minors, regarding plate recognition...look at him now. I have confidence that, if given the chance next year, Morrison will produce.
