December 10, 200915 yr Thoughts? There's a reason for everything. Unless there is some closet Red Sox prospect geek out there I suspect this is a name no one really knows but that he's a third baseman says to me as I said elsewhere we're going to see musical chairs ala Billy the Marlin once Cantu and Uggla's situations cement themselves. My post with pic and scouting report in another thread http://www.marlinsbaseball.com/topic/91236-matt-lindstrom-traded-to-astros/page__view__findpost__p__1903768
December 10, 200915 yr didn't have enough power as a conner infielder. Only thing that his biggest merit is being lefthanded hitter. Crap.
December 10, 200915 yr I don't know why but JJ hasn't played a game (in PR winter league) since November 18th. 10 at bats, four hits. That was it. Frisaro is saying (I assume from the Marlins FO) he will be given the opportunity to win the third base job this spring. If so, there's so many questions that opens up. I don't have to put up a list of players that potentially affects but besides the obvious Sanchez and Morrison are the two at the bottom who could fall off the quickest.

I think the reason Frisaro said that is because under Rule 5 rules, if he doesn't make the opening day roster, he gets sent back to Boston. So it seems that they wouldn't take this guy if they didn't think there was a chance he was better than their other 3b options. Of course, doesn't mean that Gaby and Morrison are any less valuable, just means that they may be in the minors one more year....

I do wonder what is going to happen with Cantu. BTW, the lowell to Rangers rumor/trade seems to have hit a roadblock due to concerns about his hip and hand. Interestingly but not surprisingly the story goes that the Red Sox were willing to pay virtually all of lowell's $12m to clear the roster spot.
December 10, 200915 yr Wouldn't be surprised if they broke camp with a Jimenez/Gaby platoon.Jimenez could be real solid if he hits for enough power, but it looks like he'll be horrible against LHP.
December 10, 200915 yr Wouldn't be surprised if they broke camp with a Jimenez/Gaby platoon.Jimenez could be real solid if he hits for enough power, but it looks like he'll be horrible against LHP. might be right. I'm always leery of too many platoons but that's just me. my philosophy is guys have to play together (as much as possible) everyday. helms isn't going anywhere and there are only so many roster spots which is what I was thinking about when I made my sanchez/morrison comments. but who knows what happens between now and opening day?

Since the Catching platoon doesn't affect the bench set up, it'd be the only platoon with an impact though. Helms does make more sense for a optimal roster build though, my original thought process was getting both Jimenez and Gaby MLB at bats and seeing if either (or both) can translate. But you are right, with gload gone our four bench spots right now are... Helms Brett Carroll/Back up OF Alefredo Amezaga/Back up MI Left Handed bat So unless BC starts, and the "left handed bat" is our back up OF, there wouldn't be room for Gaby, so it'd have to be Helms. I would be interested though, since the Marlins view him as having an 80 arm, if Jimenez makes the team on the bench instead of as a starter do try him in the OF? Also, depending on how much we like him, I wonder if we just trade for him if he doesn't make the team since the chances of him breaking a team like the Red Soxs are extremely slim and he gives us depth at a position of weakness.
December 10, 200915 yr Poor man's Hermida? Nah i think he spends one more full season in AA so we can see what he's got. This isn't a bad return for Lindstrom really.

Nah i think he spends one more full season in AA so we can see what he's got. This isn't a bad return for Lindstrom really. don't get the Hermida thing but don't bother to explain it to me. Also, if you're talking about JJ spending another season in AA (did I misunderstand), that would involve offering him back to the Red Sox or somehow satisfying them before he can be assigned anywhere but the major league roster.

I think he's going to make the roster. The organization either will trade Cantu since they feel the young guys can handle it or the contrary. I personally think Cantu is going to be traded.
December 10, 200915 yr Our they picked a backup plan just incase they decide to keep uggla, since the makert doesn't look too great and then trade cantu.
December 10, 200915 yr Author Yeah, it may look like if we can't get what we want for Uggla, he may be more important to us then for another team. He's been a important part of the team but his salary is the issue. I still believe he'll get traded. The Giants will eventually cave.
December 10, 200915 yr Author Yeah, Raynor is sortof surprising. I know he's had a lot of fans on this message board. I wonder if he'll stick with the Pirates.

December 10, 200915 yr For some reason, I could not get the link from way up above to work, but here is what I found at soxprospect.com {\Scouting Report: Jimenez shows strong athleticism from the waist up, but his legs and footwork can be somewhat lumbering. At the plate, Jimenez makes excellent contact and has a solid hitting approach. Very smooth swing, generates good lift on the ball and hits a lot of line drives. Doesn't strike out much; could stand to take a few more walks. Not much present power, and probably won't be a powerful slugger long-term, but could have 15 HR potential. Power probably needs to improve at least to that level if he wants to make the majors as a 3B. However, power is not his forte - his best tools are his contact, his approach, and his athleticism. Mediocre speed on the basepaths. In the field, his glove is about average and his arm is strong, but his throws can be inaccurate at times. He's shown some range, but his footwork needs improvement, and his first step reaction at third is subpar. He's also spent some time at 1B on his way up the ladder, where he's proven to be an adequate fielder. Jimenez impressed in spring training in 2008, and as such he skipped low-A to play against age-appropriate competition in 2008. Excelled in Double-A in 2009.
