January 6, 201016 yr On another front, one baseball man who recently spoke with the Marlins said it's looking more and more like Dan Uggla will start the season in Florida. The arbitration-eligible Uggla would take a huge bite out of what is expected to be a $40 million payroll. Uggla staying could mean the Marlins start taking calls on Jorge Cantu, who as a fifth-year, arbitration-eligible player also is due a huge raise. http://blogs.sun-sen...o-stay-put.html @MLBRumorCentral It's looking more and more like the Marlins will keep Dan Uggla and try to trade Jorge Cantu instead...http://bit.ly/7q2aXt about 2 hours ago -Twitter. Thoughts? Uggla's a personal favorite, so I'd be a bit happier with this but I'm biased :$
January 6, 201016 yr I can't see Cantu, who is either an underpowered 1B or a defensively challenged, average offensively 3B, command anything good tradewise.
January 6, 201016 yr Author Best case scenario is that the Marlins start off with both of them + the prospects that are ready to come up and pitch in this year, and then we contend going into the trade deadline, making it improbable for anyone to be traded. I believe our team can contend for the Wild Card w/ both Cantu and Uggla given that at least one of our prospects contributes like they're supposed to.
January 6, 201016 yr I don't see why we can't have both to at least start the season. Payroll would be $46-47 million Not including Chapman if they get him.

What happens here is a fact (spoke to an insider who believes X) followed by supposition on JR's part ("could mean") then leapfrogs into a foregone conclusion at MLBRumorCentral ("...looking more and more like...") regarding Cantu. All of it may turn out to be true but right now there is no factual basis for most of it. This is the kind of thing (lol) that the Bleacher Reportites have a field day with. :brigginbounce
January 6, 201016 yr so we could not find right deal to trade Dan Uggla so now their going try send out Cantu
January 6, 201016 yr so we could not find right deal to trade Dan Uggla so now their going try send out Cantu Cantu makes a lot more sense for this team as he can flip between the infield corners to break in Sanchez, Jimenez, and eventually Morrison. Likewise, that once Bonifacio fails at 2B the team can move Coghlan to his rightful longterm position with this. And Cantu makes less money. And Cantu will be at least a Type B, maybe a Type A at the end of the year. And Cantu is in his contract year if you believe in that (which I kind of do). It makes so much more sense to carry Cantu than Uggla, even though Uggla is the better player, because Cantu is better for the flexibility of the team, and for business reasons. They'll get something for him eventually. It's still 2 full months till Spring Training. San Francisco is literally an Uggla away from winning the West after the De Rosa and Uribe signings. I can't imagine them not wanting to part with a package of their good AA/AAA for him. Marlins just need to get it out of their head for Sanchez, and settle on Runzler, Tanner, and someone else.
January 7, 201016 yr I agree for the most part with Lou but I think they will trade Cantu soon if they decide to move him because they won't want to pay him. I would think the Orioles (1B), Twins (3B), Angels (3B), A's (1B or 3B), Mets (1B), Cardinals (3B) or D-Backs (1B) would likely be the teams in on him. But, I just don't think the Marlins will get a good return for him especially with so many free agents still available in the market.
January 7, 201016 yr I would much rather keep Uggla but he may need to play some games at 3rd base...maybe a lot of games at 3rd base
January 7, 201016 yr I don't see why we can't have both to at least start the season. Payroll would be $46-47 million Not including Chapman if they get him. Chapman's salary wouldn't be counted. Most likely he starts in the minors to work on some things. It all depends on how arbitration goes in the next few weeks. But I did predict an Opening Day payroll between $45-50 mil. Still lots of time to see how things work out.
January 7, 201016 yr Clark Spencer tweeted that the Marlins aren't going to trade Cantu even if they can't move Uggla. http://twitter.com/clarkspencer/

Morrison and/or Gaby will make the Roster this season Cantu's contract is not necessary if the Marlins keep Uggla

So if a player has a guaranteed contract not in the majors, it doesn't count to payroll? ::facepalm:: But you're going to be right about $45+ million if they don't trade Uggla.
January 7, 201016 yr If Chapman is in the minor leagues to start 2010, I believe he pays the Marlins.
January 7, 201016 yr dont see cantu being traded... Marlins will shop uggla, keep him until all star break and deal him then.. If club is in contention possibly stay the whole year
