Morrison early favorite for 1B job

Featured Replies

You can't just exclude "experience" and "age" ... when those are important indicators of where a player resides on the depth chart.

Gaby has been a prospect at the upper level of the minors for a few seasons now, producing enough to earn an extended major league opportunity (that means the team should continue to let him take the field everyday, even if he gets off to a slow start).

Morrison missed a lot of time last year, is still largely untested, and only has 340 PAs at AA. A promotion to the major leagues at this point in his career, would seem premature/overly aggressive.

Furthermore, Gaby Sanchez is projected to produce +6 runs offensively next year and Morrison is only projected to produce +1.3 -- I'd use this projection more for a relative difference than an accurate prognostication of their performance next season.

A lot of "feel good" pieces like this come out this time of year, teasing fans with the idea that their team's most prized prospects might be starting the season in the major leagues -- probably to arouse interest/build hype for the upcoming season more than anything else.

I gotta pull for Logan at this point. After all the big hoopla about Gaby going into ST last year and then watching him play his way right out of the job, I still haven't seen anything at all about this board favorite. Below average glove and not much bat at this level. And fo all the Boni haters, Gaby was outplayed by him in ST last year and in winter ball this year. I have only seen a couple glimpses of Logan so I look forward to ST this year. And we will have all our tickets Saturday.

But I will say it again. I like that there is competition at 1B this year. It hurt us not having that last spring. Gaby, Logan, and some sort of JJ2 and Cantu makes me feel more comfortable.

Have to wonder if the fact Logan is a lefty will stand him in good stead, with Coghlan being the only everyday lefty in our lineup, in addition to the majority of the starts Baker gets behind the plate.

Maybe, but I kinda doubt it will be a determining factor in the ST competition. JJ2 bats left (throws right) and he supposedly has a pretty nice glove at 1B. Of course if Gaby and Logan both disappoint in ST, that could mean Cantu to 1B and we get JJ2 at 3B. Alot of ifs this year. But I have always leaned towards a true lefty playing 1B.

Really want to see "LoMo" get 2+ months in AAA for competition reasons and to delay his arbitration clock. But love the attitude.

Gaby/Jimenez R/L platoon and Cantu shifting between 1B/3B is what I want to see. And if it doesn't work out, I'll be happy we gave each of those guys 100 or so PA to try and establish themselves before giving Morrison his shot.

What makes you think Jorge Jimenez is any more ready to platoon than Morrison? Morrison has had 1402 MiLB ABs compared to Jimenez's 1328. The only thing you can say about Jimenez is that he has 398 more ABs above A+ than Morrison, ABs in which he spent posting the lowest BABIP he's posted since 2007.

Well, the biggest difference is JJ2 has to make the team. We can't send him to the minors. So, yeah. If we want to give him a chance to see if he sticks in the organization, he jas to be on the major league level.

But the other thing is, is that Logan is a legit starter at the major league ready. You want to make sure he's ready when he comes up. The last thing you want as a team in our position is to eat service time while he tries to figure out some things (like, for instance, how to hit left handed pitching).

JJ2 is a maybe starter, maybe bench bat who may never sniff the major leagues again. If he breaks, he breaks and nothing of value was lost. Logan breaks and you can't just hide it under the rug and act like it never happened.

Jimenez played virtually no winter ball which I found surprising but he has the potential to be third baseman the Marlins need at least until they know where Dominguez' career is going. In my mind Cantu less so and I love the guy.

Spring training is going to be a fun game of musical chairs and as Nny points out Jimenez has the most to lose. I would disagree though that it's make or break for Morrison, more so for Sanchez who we all know his situation and of course barring injury or a trade which I suspect is unlikely Cantu will be somewhere in the lineup. So I guess I would grade them (in order of their personal importance to) making the team as Jimenez, Sanchez, Morrison and then Cantu.

I didn't mean break as in make or break for morrison, I mean breaking him as in rushing him. If he starts the season with us and he ended up not being ready, we ruin service time, possibly confidence in him, ect. ect. With someone of his stature, you definitely slap a big "handle with care" sticker on his forehead. He still has some questions about him (Ability to hit LHP, power numbers), and if you can fix those by having him learn in AAA even though he'd be the best options at 1B, I'd let him learn because he's upside is tremendous.

Though, the FO is also notorious for being aggressive with prospects like him, and it's worked for them so far.

man it's funny to read about Tank trying to make the bullpen, I'd almost forgotten about him already. Would be awesome if he can pull it together again though, for a while there he was a pretty nifty piece. Lots of options back there though so no biggie.

Sort of torn on Logan.... ideally would be nice to see him get a full season of at-bats above Single-A. I still think it's hard to make a big decision based on spring training... but I mean the guy has a solid track record so if he hits in spring it's probably not a fluke. And as it's been stated many times, our front office has no qualms moving guys up quick, so whatevs.

All the arby-clock stuff hopefully will be less and less of an issue as we move into the new stadium and payroll starts to edge upwards. But it's still smart financially.

Long term I'd love it if Gaby worked out at 1B, then we can go Logan-Maybin-Stanton across the outfield and just shame other teams into forfeiting.

I'll admit, I completely forgot about the rule V rule of him having to be on the 25 man but my question to Lou is still a legit one. There's really no basis for "wanting to see" Jimenez in a platoon over Logan other than the fact that you don't like the guy.

I love Logan Morrison. I think the sooner he is called up the better. He'll be an OBP machine.

Delaying Morrison's arbitration clock is valuable, plus the risk of breaking him.
