JUPITER -- Hanley Ramirez was teasing when he asked Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria last week if he was planning something special for the All-Star shortstop.

``I said, `Yeah, what's your shirt size?' '' Loria responded.

On Saturday, Loria handed Ramirez a shirt-sized box. But it didn't contain a Van Huesen button-down.

Ramirez gasped when he saw what was an inside: a pendant that spelled out -- in 394 diamonds -- Ramirez's league-league .342 batting average from last season. It was a gift from Loria.

``Hanley did something magnificent last year,'' Loria said. ``I know he gets the trophies and all the accolades that come with it. We don't wear jewelry on the field, but I know Hanley likes it off the field.''

Ramirez was stunned by Loria's generosity.

``I'm going to keep it forever,'' said Ramirez, who draped it around his neck following Saturday's spring training game. ``It's going to be something for life.''

Ramirez became the first Marlin to win a league batting title. He will receive the trophy for that honor in a pregame ceremony before the home opener April 9. The first 5,000 fans who win at Billy Bingo would receive a replica of the pendant he gave to Ramirez, though the diamonds won't be real.

The pendant contains eight to 10 karats of diamonds.

``I have a lot of respect for him,'' Ramirez said of Loria.

Do you mean that the item was under 20k? If yes, then you used the symbol wrong.

I don't think so. The two ways to look at it is that "It's a" is a variable for "Necklace price", saying the "Necklace price > 20,000". Or he was using the "greater than" symbol rather than typing it out, so it's actually a sentence, "It's a greater than 20,000 item."

Yes, that's how I interpreted it, as well. But I'm not sure why he'd say "it cost more than 20k and to him that's cheap"? So I figured he meant "it cost less than 20k, so to Loria that's still kinda cheap". In that case, he would have used the symbol wrong, because it means what you said.

Also, my guess is that this is easily worth over 20k.

Also, I couldn't find anything on google that even implied that Loria didn't pay for this himself. Carlito's Way jewelry store (?) doesn't exist, and I can't imagine why the county commissioner would participate. It's certainly possible that the commenter was taking a jab at Loria getting public money for the stadium, but that's dumb.

My f*** up, now that I re-read your post I have no idea how I interpreted it incorrectly. I blame it on being 1 a.m.

the Piece is very nice. its a great way to commemorate the amazing season hanley had last year. MLB.com's article on it says that the replica is gonna be given to the first 5,000 fans at the game on 9 APR, while this article says the first 5,000 that win at billy bingo..none the less, anyone that goes to Opening day wanna help a Air Force member thats a Huge Hanley and Marlins fan, thats stationed over in Japan with getting one of the replica's when they give them out on Opening Day?

Actually I just wrote it backwards. I really meant < 20,000. Less than 20,000. Judging the article claiming 394 diamonds... and saying up to 10 kt... they are awfully small diamonds (probably around 1/50 carat each. Im no jewler but with my limited knowledge of the stuff I know the bigger the rock the bigger the price. I'd assume this piece was like 15,000 whereas if you had a straight up 10 kt diamond it's probably like 200,000 dollars.

My vast bank of knowledge (named Google) has told me that Carlito's Way is some party people... like I said I didnt put any credibility to random people at all. Just throwin it out there. Especialyl because the piece says Loria on it...

I also did some Google searches on jewelry... (yes, Google is God, eh?)... price clearly varies with it but I was looking at the different jewelry pieces at it looks that most 10 kt pieces of small diamonds are between 10,000 and like... 35,000 so who knows...

Hehe. Either way, it was a realy nice gesture. And who knows - it may even have a solid return on investment if Hanley decides to resign here after his contract, to extend the current one, give any "hometown" discount, etc. Building goodwill certainly doesn't hurt.

Crafting the piece probably cost $20,000 before adding the materials (diamonds, gold, platinum) costs.

This is a one of a kind piece, a lot of time and energy went into conceiving and rendering concept drawings, making modifications, determining a final design then turning it over to a metallurgist for casting and ultimately the people entrusted with assembling it. And I'm probably at the low end of the scale.

Tax write-off. :lol

Exactly.

:lol at trying to decipher the meaning of >20,000 or

This all being said having an active owner is so awesome... it's not at all like the Alan Cohen regime for the last 10 years and the Florida Panthers.

Hell, they don't even let his name be mentioned on the Panthers forum.

I thought from the el niño caption that this thread had something to do with Edgar Renteria

Cool beans. :thumbup

Relax. I was making light of the situation and not putting anyone down.

Not that I was bothered by it but I wouldnt call blatantly laughing at pretty much everyone in the thread for questioning my mistake exactly "making light". You arent laughing with them, but rather at them. It might not have been your intent but that is why we choose our words carefully on the intrawebz.

None the less all is well in MarlinLand... good morning everyone.

As an USAF vet, I got you covered. All I have read says it goes to the first 5000 fans so we will be sure to arrive early. Just hope 10.000 others don't think the same way.
