May 2, 201016 yr Glad we bounced back after losing game one of this series.. Day off and then lincecum, zito, cain... GIT R DONE! :gofish
May 2, 201016 yr No option to vote for Hunter Jones? No, but really: Hanley is the Fish of the Game, although it was nice to see JJ work through some troubles and be the ace we know he is.
May 2, 201016 yr A good win by the fish, and its nice to get a positive series before we match up with the Giants because those guys can be pretty tough.
May 2, 201016 yr We could've folded after coming off series losses to the Rockies and Astros, then losing game one against the Nats. Nice to see us come back and win the last two games.
May 2, 201016 yr Author This is only the second game so far this season that Cantu was hitless. What a bum.
May 2, 201016 yr This is only the second game so far this season that Cantu was hitless. What a bum. What are we going to do if Cantu has another hitless game before the end of May? I don't think there will be any choice but to fire Fredi.
May 2, 201016 yr I really thought Gaby did a good job in the two hole, I hope freddy keeps him there.
May 2, 201016 yr Author I friggin love this: Fresh off a 3-hit, 2-homer game, Hanley Ramirez on facing Lincecum, Zito and Cain next week: "They're going to have to face me." #marlins

May 2, 201016 yr Hanley is a baller. And BC is indeed playing really well, despite the way he turned around and around on that one fly ball. :lol He should be playing every game vs LHP right now, at least until Coghlan gets going. And he should probably get some starts vs RHP.

Agree, Carroll has shown that he is a legitimate MLB OFer and with his awesome defense and solid hitting, he's playing better right now than Coghlan against all pitchers, and until Coghlan shows himself to be half the hitter that he was as ROY you can't keep Carroll on the bench against lefties. I always said that Carroll was under-rated just based on his minor league numbers, and its really great to see him hitting with such confidence.

How can you say he has "solid hitting"? .215/.277/.350 career hitter, .234/.306/.383 in 2009, .267/.303/.533 in 2010. He's never shown "solid hitting". I think that's what has branded him more than minor league numbers.
May 2, 201016 yr He hasn't been a consistent hitter over any long periods, but he's .281/.351/.563 (.914) as of right now.

My gut tells me that he can hit enough to put up a .700 OPS and be a reasonable starter (especially if Fredi puts him in RF where he belongs), but I just don't know if he'll ever get on base at a consistently decent clip i.e. .330+ OBP.

I'm talking about the Carroll we're seeing right now, not the guy who saw sporadic duty for the first couple years of his career who was obviously not adjusted to major league pitching.

He's seeing sporadic duty right now, all his times on base are in 5 of his 12 games, and he only has 32 AB. You're basing this on just about nothing.

He's seeing sporadic duty right now, all his times on base are in 5 of his 12 games, and he only has 32 AB. You're basing this on just about nothing. My point was that it wasn't easy for him to get comfortable at the major league level because he didn't get a steady helping of at-bats to get used to major league pitching. Even Coghlan needed a fair share of at-bats to start legitimately producing in the majors. A large percentage of Carroll's at-bats early in his career came after he had entered the game already in progress, meaning he hardly even got 3-4 at-bats in one game to try and get in a rhythm. Most young players simply don't adjust to major league pitching when used that why, which is why Carroll struggled earlier in his career. Most teams, including us, usually won't even bring up a young player if he's not going to see consistent at-bats. In Carroll's situation, his defense was so good that it was a curse at times because he was used solely as a defensive replacement for long stretches. The only time Carroll did see a good number of AB's in the majors was last year, and I think what you are seeing right now is a direct result of being (finally) comfortable at the plate. Carroll is a lot better than the career numbers you posted indicate, and he will probably play a lot better this year than last year if he is used correctly. Right now out him, CC, and Maybin, Carroll is the only one who is having the type of competent at-bats that a bona fide MLB outfielder should have- looking to drive the ball in hitters counts and actually seeming to have a chance of hitting this well, etc. There is very little reason to expect that he will regress so far to be playing at or near his career numbers when he has obviously improved his game over 3 years of major league time.
