Everything I've read makes it seem like Yelich is looking for something in the realm of $2 million.

Capozzi thinks it'll be around $1.2 million, basically assuming Yelich will come down on his asking price.

 

I'm actually with Spike on this one. Usually I don't hope for somebody not to sign, but they say next years draft may be the deepest draft class in a long time, and having 2 first round picks would be nice next year. I'm still not completely high on Yelich as 1B really isn't a long term need position with both Gaby and Logan.

 

Man, I agreed with Spike on something relating to the draft. I need to lie down...

I'm actually higher on J.T Realmuto, Rob Rasmussen and Robert Morey than I am on Yelich personally.

 

 

Also news, our 4th round draft pick Toles sounds like he's not going to sign and will go to Tennessee instead. From the scouting reports he sounds like another toolsy guy with plus plus speed (similar to Isaac Galloway).

I personally think Yellich was drafted with the intent that he wouldnt sign to get 2 picks next year. One will probably got to a Mahtook type college player, the other a upside prep arm.

 

If they draft next year like they have the past 2, the franchise could be in deep trouble.

Yelich sounds like another Logan Morrison. Quite honestly, I'm not sure why we drafted him.

We really need to stop drafting "sure things with low upside". WE really have no more need for them. WE need a high risk high reward kind of guy for the top of the rotation.

It's not about Gaby, Logan, or need. I just would like to see a top notch pitching prospect taken over a guy who probably projects to be another James Loney, if he pans out.

Our organization is pretty barren on hitting spects right now. Cousins, Skip, Ozzie, maybe Ike Galloway. Can you honestly say any other hitter outside of those is in our top 20 right now?

If we're still considering Maybin, then we're still considering West and Sanabia, and I'll throw up a top 5 pitching spect list of West, Hand, James, Sanabia, and Olmos or something and take that over Maybin, Doninguez, Skip, Ozzie, and Scotty Cousins.

That's because all the position players are pretty much all already up in the big leagues. The way things stand, once Dominguez pans out (hopefully he will), we'll have an extra position player to trade. I'm not worried about the position players. I'll put our team on the field with the majority of the teams in the big leagues.

 

I'm not saying that this is why I dislike the Yelich pick, but there's certainly a much bigger need for pitching (specifically starting pitching) in the organization.

There were quite a few. I don't have the names right now but look at the results of that draft. A few pitchers fell quite a few slots down, probably because of their price or agent, though.

I don't mind taking a hitter, if the hitter is the best player available/projects as something special. A 1B/corner OF who doesn't really display great power, however, does not get me excited. At least not in the 1st round.

From the Marlins

Possessing above-average speed, he has the ability to play center field and hit at the top of the order.

This clears things up a little for me it appears they've drafted a centerfielder, not a first baseman or a corner outfielder.

He's said to be converting to Outfield Full time since he has plus speed and they are trying to get him to play center.

The kid has a nice swing I'll give him that but he's projected to have less power then Morrison or Loney which is basically 15 HR a year or less which is probably a main reason they want to move him to Center. (Along with if Maybin doesn't pan out).

 

He's really nothing special in my eyes and could be more of a Ross Gload type player in the future if not starting full time.

I don't know how anyone can say we've got any depth in hitting prospects after this year. Morrison and Stanton have graduated, and can Maybin even really be considered a prospect at this point? That leaves Dominguez and a lot of guys who probably won't be anything at the major league level.

 

There's a difference in having young talent in the majors and having prospects waiting in the minors. For us, not having prospects is very treacherous because they are our only reinforcement, as we don't sign players to fill the bench, and we can't take on just about anyone in a trade either, as we can't afford a lot of guys and we really don't have any trade ammo we can part with in the minors.

 

I wasn't particularly enamored with the Yillich pick, but to act like we don't need a good hitter in the minors is wrong.
