Javier Vazquez Signs One Year Deal

Featured Replies

There is a great deal of study about his velocity decline last year, but he also had some control issues as well. I think there may have been a small injury and Girardi hasn't ever demonstrated any ability to notice when a player is covering something like that up (as competitive guys are likely to do). It looks like he fell apart in August.

So that number could go down $2-3 million if some of those things listed above are different, but this is generally where the team stands. i.e., this "could" fit into the $53-55 million projected payroll that's being reported so the team keeps Nunez and really has a nice bullpen.

That's a good update. But I still see the payroll being closer to $60 mil than it is to $55 mil. It's still very early and the Winter Meetings are right around the corner. We've made some interesting moves and Loria says we aren't done yet. We still have some very tradeable players that wouldn't really hurt us to lose, would help other teams, and would bring us a very good return.

I was just at one site that had our projected payroll around $71 mil. I have no idea where they are getting their numbers from because I don't see us near that this year. Maybe they kept raising their prediction every time the local "experts" raised theirs. I have no idea. Just goes to show how different the "experts" can be.

What do they expect, we sign Jayson Werth? You should probably not read a site that comes up with such a terrible number. That's not even in the realm of possibility, which $60 could be.

$60 would be perfect. Add a veteran lefty reliever and two bench outfielders. Team is set with strong AAA depth.

Like I said, I have no idea what they are thinking. But is it any worse than the other sites that predicted a payroll of $47-$50? (Those same sites last year first predicted about $35 mil.) I don't think so. Just shows that the "experts" have no idea what they are talking about and aren't too good at guessing.

But I do disagree on how to get to that $60 mark. Veteran lefty reliever, yes. But I want a real CFer brought in. Our current OF really makes me worry. I believe we have bench guys that can fill in for the OF. Just like a back up catcher, they don't have to bring a big bat, just not any decrease with the glove.

He just wants to go out of his way to try to make all of these "sources" seem incredible and stupid. That way he can self-aggrandize himself in making a prediction, despite not having to go out on a limb to do so. Don't read into it any further than that.

Here's a big surprise....That's not true at all. But this is to expected when someone continuously stops reading because their lips get tired.

So tellus...What limb did you go out on and what was your payroll prediction before the signings and trades? Link them.

I would be more concerned with the control issues. A dip in velocity is easily overcome if a pitcher becomes a "smarter" pitcher. What you say about GI Joe is true, so I would hope they do a very good physical exam.

Maybe I'm wrong or something, but I don't think I am. Is there even such a thing as a Type C free agent?

There was a Type C but they got rid of it before 2008 with the new CBA. I think that's where Mets_bs's confusion stems from.

Indeed, that's what it was. Thanks.

Cousins plays a nice CF and is not helpless with the bat.

He is the fall back from within the organization.

Yes it is worse, because at least the Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel have contacts with the front office. It's a much better source than fan speculation, which is why we should be sticking to the $53-55 projection until proven wrong. I hope it's $60, and Loria found some "heartfelt" money, to go get Vazquez, his boy.

And do you really see them getting a significant CF at the start of the year? All signs point to the Chris Coghlan experience, with Boner as the primary backup and Cousins the fallback. They'll get a veteran 4th outfielder to help this out a little (and really, it's to bad Cody is such a dick because he would be perfect and allow us to "platoon" Coghlan at CF/2B/3B and see where his future really is), and really nothing else. This is a trade deadline piece if Coghlan fails. I can't see any real money to devoted to this when Loria is mouthing off, "I'm not done with that bullpen yet."

I mean, I think this move is absolutely insane, but I'm willing to give Beinfest April to prove me wrong that this is the right move for Coghlan. This front office has earned a few months before declaring their projects terrible. I'm cautiously optimistic. Because really, it either works out and Coghlan is the longterm CF, or it doesn't work out and they move him to god damn 2B. I'm cool with either!

Curious, is Juan Pierre available as a free agent? Bringing him in as a backup OF and fallback at CF might be worth the contract if for no other reason then he's played the OF in Sunlife before and should be capable.

At this stage, I'd rather let Cousins and Bonifacio handle backing up CF and not pay an aging Juan Pierre

Plus I think he's going into the last year of his contract right now

I was getting furious, but then you said backup so I got less furious.

But he is signed for $8.5 million in 2011. Money well spent! ................

There is no limb to go out on. That's precisely my point. Your obsession with who gets it "right" and who gets it "wrong" just reeks of immature narcissism, which is consistent with much of your posting history here.

And you are speaking like a true narcissist here as well. I remember last season when Lou got the arbitration figures on the nose and you chastised him for not saying anything about total payroll figures and proceeded to pat yourself on the back (for essentially stating the obvious).

I really like the pickup of Vazquez. He was awful in both of his years with the Yankees so I give him a pass for last season. A return to the N.L. East is going to do him a lot of good.
