November 28, 201015 yr Vasquez' WHIP last year (walks plus hits divided by innings pitched) was as poor as that of Volstad last season, and significantly worse than Johnson, Nolasco, Sanchez and Sanabia. I do not know what is accomplished by signing him for a year.

November 28, 201015 yr there are some pitchers who cant hack it in new york that find success else where. there is a long list of them i would imagine. its not like he has been poor for many years.. he was lights out in the NL east in 2009 with the braves and obviously still thinks he has something to prove and IMO, could end up being our 2nd best pitcher next year

November 28, 201015 yr The only benefit of this trade IMO is that the Marlins may be free to make a trade for a good outfielder by offering up Nolasco or Volstad. Vasquez doesn't project as any better than most of last year's starters. To improve this rotation he only has to be significantly better than Nate Robertson really, which he of course will be.
November 28, 201015 yr while i was doing Javy Vazquez's hair, i noticed some interesting splits. Lol thank you, that was perfect.

November 29, 201015 yr This is great news!! Really happy to have Javy join the Marlins. The deal is solid and he adds great depth to our already improving pitching this year. Very excited for the next upcoming season. Reading MarlinsLou comments I do wonder if the Marlins will due Nunez, by dealing him we may fill other holes with a bench bat and another Lefty. Though with him we still have a strong bullpen. Either way we have something to look at.
November 29, 201015 yr This is a very nice signing. Update C John Buck $6,000,000 1B Gaby Sanchez $420,000 2B Omar Infante $3,250,000 3B Bonifacio/Dominguez $420,000 SS Hanley Ramirez $11,000,000 LF Logan Morrison $410,000 CF Chris Coghlan $600,000 RF Mike Stanton $420,000 B Bonifacio/Dominguez $410,000 B John Baker $430,000 B Wes Helms $1,000,000 B Veteran Lefty $410,000 B Veteran Outfielder $410,000 SP Josh Johnson $7,750,000 SP Javy Vazquez $7,000,000 SP Ricky Nolasco $6,000,000 SP Anibal Sanchez $2,250,000 SP Chris Volstad $430,000 RP Leo Nunez $4,000,000 RP Clay Hensley $1,750,000 RP Edward Mujica $1,000,000 RP Brian Sanches $430,000 RP Ryan Webb $430,000 RP Mike Dunn $410,000 RP Veteran Lefty $410,000 $57,040,000 Notes (1) Rough arbitration estimates for Nolasco, Anibal, Nunez, Hensley, and Mujica. It should be close (2) Javy's deal is $6-7 million, so could move (3) Buck is making $4.5 in 2011, but received a $1.5 signing bonus. I'm counting it (4) Adding at least $500-750,000 to Infante's number for plate apperance incentives, which I find likely So that number could go down $2-3 million if some of those things listed above are different, but this is generally where the team stands. i.e., this "could" fit into the $53-55 million projected payroll that's being reported so the team keeps Nunez and really has a nice bullpen. I love the signing, but a little worried about the lack of lefties on the pitching staff. I wonder if trading Leo, getting a veteran left hander, and a bench bat instead (with the side effect of someone like Sanabia, Mharinez, Ceda, etc, being the last guy in the pen), is a better idea than just keeping Leo. That's a lot of dough for 65 innings. Lou, I would think Gaby would get more since he put up near rookie of the year numbers, Stanton a little more with his great year, Coughlin a lot less since he didnt do anything this year, Volstad more with his good year, and Nolasco will we sign him?

It doesn't really work like that. Teams choose what they want to pay the player. Regardless of the fact I list those out as placeholders (with the basic idea of $410 1 year, $420 2nd, $430 3rd, which are very arbitrary for cost of living increases to MLB's club controlled players under the collective bargaining agreement) versus actual salary figures just to get a roundball, if the Marlins decide to "reward" any of those players for performance, it's literally an extra $5,000 and nothing that drastically impacts team payroll. Coghlan is higher, as the Marlins extended him higher as a thank you for the Rookie of the Year. It's very unlikely the Marlins give an extra $100,000 or something notable to any of their club controlled players as none have similar achievements. There is a method to this.
November 29, 201015 yr while i was doing Javy Vazquez's hair, i noticed some interesting splits. :notworthy Haha but seriously, I love this signing! The FO said they were going to spend the Uggs $$$ on a starter, and they followed through. Javy should be able to keep the ball in the park for the most part at spacious Joe Robbie/Pro Player/Dolphin/etc Stadium unlike Yankee Stadium. I just hope he can recover the 5 MPH that he lost on his fastball somehow. Either way, this is certainly an improvement over Sanabia in the rotation. Although he pitched efficiently last year, he is better suited as a bullpen arm. I think given more time, he would have gotten rocked as a starter. People picked up on him a lot after seeing him the 1st time in a game. Plus it allows us to send Nunez out of here and really not lose any depth in the 'pen.
November 29, 201015 yr Also Lou, why do you think we can get a veteran lefty LHP for the league minimum? Is there something I don't understand about how it works, but why would they accept that deal? Are you assuming that they accept a minor league deal or something? Same with the 2 bench players. Like I said, I might just not get this whole process, but it doesn't make sense to me.

There are plenty of lefty specialists out there. I already brought up a potential minor league deal candidate in Sherrill. To be honest, I don't even think the front office is going to sign a second lefty. That's what I think when I hear Beinfest talk. I'm not so sure how I feel about that, but whatever. I don't mind the all-righty rotation, but I always like more than one lefty in the pen. From the sounds of it, it seems like they're content with this: 1. Nunez (closer) 2. Webb (righty setup guy) 3. Dunn (LOOGY/lefty setup guy) 4. Mujica (mid-relief) 5. Sanches (mid-relief) 6. Badenhop or Sanabia (long relief) 7. Minor league arm. They could sign a veteran lefty, but they've also had some comments about guys like Dustin Richardson (lefty), and Steve Cishek (righty) getting a shot in ST. Money aside, if we're going with one lefty, Badenhop should go. One lefty means that you also need some more righties that can get lefties out, and Sanabia does that way better than Badenhop.

Exactly. 4 million is a bit much for a reliever on this team, but I prefer to keep Nunez. With him, our bullpen is going to be very, very good.
November 29, 201015 yr @jaysonst If Javy Vazquez bounces back #Marlins could have nasty rotation: Johnson, Nolasco, Sanchez, Volstad, Vazquez. Who'd want to face that group? Thanks Jason Stark :lol haha
November 29, 201015 yr Yea, our pitching is going to be great next season, imo. Beinfest did a great job building it this off season.

November 29, 201015 yr ^ Yes, it's an amazing feeling. It's also an amazing feeling not to have to rely on reclamation projects to fill out your bullpen and hope they rebound.
