Javier Vazquez Signs One Year Deal

Featured Replies

I love this signing. Vazquez will be a valuable pitcher for our rotation. I am hoping that the consecutive games without being in the DL streak continues. Being injury free and an innings eater will greatly benefit this team, and the bullpen will be a little better rested. I dont care what anybody says, without uggla but with Vazquez, Infante, Mike Dunn, etc, this team is alot better

in 2008 our opening day starter was Mark Hendrickson. it's amazing how the pitching's been completely overhauled (ish) in a couple of years.

Payroll now at $56M with everyone. Could save around $4.0 moving Nunez and Badenhop.

Dunn is now the key guy. He needs to shed the wildness and become a shut down pen lefty.

How long have we waited for something like this? It's not flashy, but it's what we need.

No more counting on the Hayden Penn's, the Daniel Barone's, and the Wesley Obermueller's.

No longer will we have to sit back and watch the Koronka's, Seddon's, and De La Cruz's of the world take the mound for a sure loss.

Enough with watching under developed Tucker or West, or AAAA talent BK Kim or Nate Robertson being key parts of our rotation.

Once again, this is a solid signing.

Now we can trade Morrison, Nolasco , Nunez and ?? for Upton. We need a centerfielder.

No.

I'd much more be for Gaby, Nunez, Galloway for Ellsbury.

Jacoby is also great defensively, cheaper (1st yr arb eligible), fast. puts the ball in play. The only thing I'm worried about is if he's healthy and can put up numbers like he did in 08 and 09.

I wouldn't mind not getting either Upton or Ellsbury if Gaby and Logan can hit like they did last year and Ricky is a solid pitcher to have.

Amen!

We have the luxury of 5 proven MLB starters in the rotation along with the possibility of a 6th if ever needed in Sanabia and hopefully a 7th in Sean West.

I'd start Ray Barone before Daniel

The only benefit of this trade IMO is that the Marlins may be free to make a trade for a good outfielder by offering up Nolasco or Volstad. Vasquez doesn't project as any better than most of last year's starters.

Where are you getting your projections?

This is a very nice signing.

Notes

(1) Rough arbitration estimates for Nolasco, Anibal, Nunez, Hensley, and Mujica. It should be close

(2) Javy's deal is $6-7 million, so could move

(3) Buck is making $4.5 in 2011, but received a $1.5 signing bonus. I'm counting it

(4) Adding at least $500-750,000 to Infante's number for plate apperance incentives, which I find likely

So that number could go down $2-3 million if some of those things listed above are different, but this is generally where the team stands. i.e., this "could" fit into the $53-55 million projected payroll that's being reported so the team keeps Nunez and really has a nice bullpen.

I love the signing, but a little worried about the lack of lefties on the pitching staff. I wonder if trading Leo, getting a veteran left hander, and a bench bat instead (with the side effect of someone like Sanabia, Mharinez, Ceda, etc, being the last guy in the pen), is a better idea than just keeping Leo. That's a lot of dough for 65 innings.

Sources: Vazquez agreement is 1 yr, $7M. Full no-trade clause. Team cannot offer salary arbitration. Physical this week. #Marlins #MLB

That's whatever, it works because if he's good then solid for us we get a stud pitcher and try to resign him for a reasonable price but if he sucks then he goes bye bye.

Huge addition. to add a 200 IP pitcher who has had success in the NL East... love it.

Full no-trade clause, Translation: YOU'D BETTER NOT TRADE ME THIS YEAR!

Team cannot offer salary arbitration, Translation: YOU'D BETTER NOT SIGN ME NEXT YEAR!

:mis2

(I'm joking, by the way).

He's smart and banking on a great year (good for us) so he can try to spin that in to one last final payday and maybe get a ted lilly deal before he retires

Yeah I agree
