November 29, 201015 yr So that number could go down $2-3 million if some of those things listed above are different, but this is generally where the team stands. i.e., this "could" fit into the $53-55 million projected payroll that's being reported so the team keeps Nunez and really has a nice bullpen. That's a good update. But I still see the payroll being closer to $60 mil than it is to $55 mil. It's still very early and the Winter Meetings are right around the corner. We've made some interesting moves and Loria says we aren't done yet. We still have some very tradeable players that wouldn't really hurt us to lose, would help other teams, and would bring us a very good return. I was just at one site that had our projected payroll around $71 mil. I have no idea where they are getting their numbers from because I don't see us near that this year. Maybe they kept raising their prediction every time the local "experts" raised theirs. I have no idea. Just goes to show how different the "experts" can be.
November 29, 201015 yr What kind of draft pick is he going to cost? Won't cost us one. The Yankees do get an extra pick but we keep ours. He's a type B, right? Only the first round pick is protected, so wouldn't it be a second? Just wondering. The Yankees get a supplemental first rounder; the Marlins don't give up a pick. Only time the team has to give up picks is for Type A free agents; it's the reason I didn't want A.J. Pierzynski, and I'm sure was part of the reason why the Marlins also chose Buck over Pierzynski. When did this happen?Compensation has always been a Type A is a first rounder, a Type B is a second rounder, a Type C is a third rounder. Supplemental picks come into play if it's a protected pick (pick 1-12 of the first round) or if a team signs more than one of the same class of FA.

You should probably not read a site that comes up with such a terrible number. That's not even in the realm of possibility, which $60 could be. $60 would be perfect. Add a veteran lefty reliever and two bench outfielders. Team is set with strong AAA depth.

I guess I can stomach it because of the defense either one would bring, assuming they'd put EB in center field.
November 30, 201015 yr Wow, he turned down 2Y/$18M to come here? That's crazy. Also, I can't believe someone offered him that. I'd be willing to bet that the team in question is the Washington Nationals. They seem like the type of team that would offer that and then get turned down. The Cubs are in a pretty sh*t spot too

We can handle this, and I really don't expect Bonifacio to start regularly with this team immediately going to Dominguez or bringing in another veteran 2B/3B option to play a little bit. We're doing sh*t next year if SP 2-5 tank and Stanton, Morrison, Gaby, and Coghlan don't immediately hit. Dominguez/Bonifacio is way down my list of concerns as to "contending."

I would not want to be part of that mess.

Same can't be said for Washington.
November 30, 201015 yr Not sure if like. Let's be real, he's not a solution. I'm surprised the Marlins went after someone with so little upside left over Pavano. It should be interesting to see how Sanabia battles for a rotation spot come spring training.
November 30, 201015 yr Sanabia, koehler, villanueva, west will all start in New Orleans next year Nice bench. And the bullpen bench will be pretty good as well. The Marlins have a nice collection of pitching talent that should remain affordable for a while with a cheapie replacing Vazquez in 2012 as the other four starters get big raises - assuming success in 2011.
November 30, 201015 yr Which is exactly why they wouldn't be the ones to offer the contract. Lets not kid ourselves, players love to play in Chicago. Same can't be said for Washington. I assumed you meant the Cubs and Nats current positions, not their payroll flexibility. Javier Vazquez would absolutely hate playing in Chicago again. He's made it clear he doesn't want to play far from PR and he doesn't seem to do well in the bigger markets. But on Chicago vs Washington. The Cubs are a mess while the Nationals are in the process of building a contender. I don't think the Cubs start to compete much sooner than the Nats do.

I agree they are have a nice piece or two but they have finished in last place every year since 2004. The cubs are a mess but are still a much more desirable destination than washington by a long shot. My guess would have been Seattle that offered the 2 year deal

November 30, 201015 yr Not sure how anyone could dislike the Vazquez deal. At his worst, he'll probably put up Volstad-like ERA #'s. If he sucks, whatever. There's no risk involved with this deal; it's a 1 year deal. Not as if we're stuck with him long-term, if his regression in velocity becomes a real issue.

He basically has the most upside of anyone we could get for $7M (except maybe Pavano but that's another risky guy).
November 30, 201015 yr Maybe I'm wrong or something, but I don't think I am. Is there even such a thing as a Type C free agent? There was a Type C but they got rid of it before 2008 with the new CBA. I think that's where Mets_bs's confusion stems from.
November 30, 201015 yr So what's this about his velocity being down and it effecting his stuff? Anyone see a lot of him last year?
