It's Monday, December 6th and you're at the beautiful Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin in Orlando, Florida. Around you are the most brilliant baseball minds that the 29 other teams sent to try to wheel and deal to get their own team to the top. You are on a mission to make the Marlins a better team than before, without giving up any vital pieces or spending too much money. Other teams may be more compatible with you than others. You have to know each team's situation and what they are trying to accomplish here. What moves do you make to get the Marlins to the top of the NL East in 2011?

Marlins Needs

-LHP (bullpen)

-Veteran Lefty OF (bench)

-Possible CF (starter)

Your Mission

Create the best 25-man roster without going over 60MM for the 2010 season and post your version of the roster/payroll when you are done

- You can fill the empty roster spots with minor league players if you wish

- Keep in mind no-trade clauses, what players would realistically ask for, other realism, ect...

Doing mine later (this took a long time to write up!) haha

You left out Burke Badenhop.

I'm not sure why you have Baker on your bench as he won't ready until the later part of the season. Not sure about money wise but if I'm GM I go out and get a veteran outfielder (one that can play CF) and then maybe see about another catcher, if none then go with a Hayes/Davis on the bench and as always look for pitching all the while staying within my budget.

Not ready to catch; he'll be ready to hit.

You left out Burke Badenhop.

Thanks, changed it. I checked last year and he made below 410,000, so that sounds like a good salary for this year. All relative of course.

Badenhop is arbitration-eligible. Think more like $750k IIRC.

410,000 is league minimum. I don't know how much he's making, but I'm guessing it's approximately 1 mill.

I believe the first year of Bucks contract is 3.5 million.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Maybe I should get my tattoo removed?

Maybe I should Play Baseball?

Maybe I should be a Closer out of the Bullpen?

Maybe I should be the next great power hitting CF?

What should I do?

Beinfest: Just Do It. (Pull the trigger on Upton that is)

Eh, forgot about that. I thought I read that we came to terms with him.

And also, Buck's 1st year is 3.5M, but we gave him a 2.5M signing bonus so I included that (just going off of Lou's projections in the Vasquez thread)

  • Author

And I was going to do it now, but I will wait to see what happens with A-Gon and the Padres, cause I might have special plans for Heath Bell :hat haha (always wanted to use that smiley)

Trade Nunez for a minor league 2B propect and sign Scott Downs to two years for $12M.

Bring me Scotty Pods. 1 year 2 million. He could be the 4th outfielder as a lefty, or he could start at centerfield. The other 1-2 million left could be used for a lefty pitcher, fill out the bench with some minor league guys?

Aahahaha the last part made my day.

I wouldn't even want to spend 12 M on a reliever but on Downs, I'd rather pass.

"This guy here is DEAD!" "Cross him off then....."

ummmm no. id rather start a blind chris coghlan

I'd say bring back Ohman and bring in Kotsay for the bench.. really not expecting much more this offseason. I think we go ahead with Cog in CF and give Dominguez his shot at 3B. Doesn't mean I'm thrilled about it

Trade SS Ozzie Martinez, RHP Jhan Marinez, and LHP Edgar Olmos to the San Diego Padres for RHP Heath Bell.

Trade RHP Leo Nunez to the Toronto Blue Jays for LHP Marc Rzepczynski.

Trade RHP Edward Mujica to the New York Mets for a player to be named later.

Sign OF Elijah Dukes to a minor league deal.

~58-59 MM payroll

This may not be realistic because they might not be willing to go that high with the payroll, but considering the thread rules ("Create the best 25-man roster without going over 60MM for the 2010 season and post your version of the roster/payroll when you are done; realism"), I just followed that.

Things my team would do:

1. Elijah Dukes, at the time of his release, wasn't putting up awful #'s, and was pretty damn good in '08. Plenty of talent; no risk in a minor league deal. The Nationals didn't even publicly explain why they released him in '09 (no proof of off-field issues with them)

2. Heath Bell for '11. The Marlins have risked plenty this offseason trading significant players away to rebuild their pen; they might as well go all out, and get a legit proven arm in Bell to close out games, imo. Follow the plan; finish the building of the legit pen. Let go of Nunez/Mujica as salary dumps. Rzepczynski was gotten for Nunez to fill the 2nd lefty arm in the pen (good #'s against lefties, young, club controlled, some upside).

3. Don't start the year with Dominguez. Let him further develop in the minors; if he's ready, call him up in late June/delay his arb. another year. Signing Dukes helps this; not to mention, the outfield I put together is way better than Coghlan in CF (which makes no sense since they're supposedly building around pitching and defense...) Stanton is much more athletic/seems much more capable of being able to handle CF (not to mention, it would only further increase Stanton's value, as a player)

i like your moves. but i rather keep mujica over badenhop (is 250,000 really that much of a difference). and wouldn't it make more sense to start dukes in CF since he's had experience there. but these moves would be awesome nonetheless

Mujica is a guaranteed ML contract, while Badenhop still supposedly has an option left. So cheaper, and more flexibility in case he struggles, again.

As for Dukes, he has experience playing CF, but it seems like he's been better in RF based on the #'s. Either way, Dukes/Stanton CF/RF, whichever order. Anything but Coghlan in CF.

Elijah Dukes... really???

fwiw, a warrant was issued for his arrest a few weeks ago

I'll take Elijah Dukes over having to watch Chris Coghlan in CF/Emilio Bonifacio playing everyday.

People can say what they want about Dukes and his off-field issues, but fact of the matter is he has lots of potential, is basically a 5 tool player, and has proven that he can be productive in the big leagues before. If it fails, there's no risk involved in the contract.

And yeah, I know the name being brought up was probably random, as he was playing Independent ball in 2010; I saw his name (I forgot where) a couple of days ago, and thought it was an interesting idea.

The only way Dukes is anywhere near a baseball field is if he is delivering furniture to the clubhouse. The guy is a first class idiot

If Milton Bradley is still in the big leagues with that legit contract of his, Elijah Dukes will sign a minor league contract with a team willing to give him a chance, sooner or later. Some team will give him a chance, sooner or later. He can play.

I'll take that bet

As if that ever stopped him from playing baseball.

But yeah, I want nothing to do with the guy.
