December 7, 201015 yr Dennys Reyes is expected to sign within the next 42 hours. Reyes is thought to be deciding between offers from the Phillies and Marlins, who both want him as a middle reliever. The 33-year-old lefty turned in a 3.55 ERA and 1.45 WHIP over 38 innings for the Cards this year. The Brewers, Marlins and Phillies have shown interest thus far in free agent utilityman Delwyn Young. The news comes via Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Young was designated for assignment by the Pirates in mid-November and elected free agency after passing through waivers. He posted a pitiful .236 batting average and .286 on-base percentage over 191 at-bats in 2010, but he would make for fine organizational depth at a variety of positions. I wouldn't mind either of these guys. Reyes wasn't great against lefties last year but has shown throughout his career that he is more than capable of doing so. Plus you gotta love a fat guy on your team. Young is a solid pinch hitter and versatile. Can play both corner OF spots along with 3B and is a switch hitter.
December 7, 201015 yr Dennys is a big guy, but he pitches better against righties than lefties. He does average more than 1 K an inning against lefties, though. Also, he's a walks machine. Almost 1 walk per inning.
December 7, 201015 yr Author Dennys is a big guy, but he pitches better against righties than lefties. He does average more than 1 K an inning against lefties. In 2009, he had a .207 BAA with a 1.03 WHIP against lefties and the year before had a .202 BAA with a 0.89 WHIP against lefties. Career .239 BAA/1,37 WHIP against LH hitting.
December 7, 201015 yr Without looking deep into numbers, I wouldnt be against giving these two a shot. At least they're major league ready talent. We aren't likely to make any other major splashes from here to Opening Day so a few smaller sprinkles could be enough.
December 7, 201015 yr Minor league deal for Delwyn only. He is terrible, terrible, defensively even if he can play all over. Can hit a little bit. Worth a flyer, nothing more. Reyes better be cheap if they guarantee a MLB deal, which he likely will demand with his experience. He tops out at 40-45 innings max. He is as LOOGY as they get, despite the flipped splits of last year.

I didn't check the years before last. Either way, something happened last year.

Almost 1 walk per inning. No he doesn't. He's a LOOGY, who's not really that good. I'm hoping he takes the Phillies offer instead. Delwyn Young would be a bit better. He's not a better hitter than Baker so I don't like him as the lefty bench bat, but I like Young's versatility/the fact that he can be another option for the 2B/3B role.
December 7, 201015 yr Young would be interesting off the bench, since he can play OF and most of the IF. Although we do already have Bonifacio for that...

December 7, 201015 yr Pass on Delwyn Young. Dennys Reyes cant exactly hurt though, I dont see why not.

December 7, 201015 yr Author Dennys Reyes cant exactly hurt though, I dont see why not. Agreed. The guy hasn't had an ERA over 4 since 2005. I don't expect him to be a shutdown guy but we could definitely do worse. Would be a solid middle of the bullpen guy, IMO.
December 7, 201015 yr If the Marlins are ever going to be a first class franchise, the Delwyn Youngs of this world will not get even a glance.
December 8, 201015 yr Apparently, it was a false rumor and the Marlins are not interested in Young. Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun-Sentinel reporting that. Reyes seems more likely to sign with the Phillies. That's cool with me; I wasn't exactly thrilled with either move. I don't even see how Reyes makes sense. You don't sign guys just because they're left-handed. That's a guaranteed contract for Reyes; people have to remember that the Marlins already have all 7 spots in the pen locked up basically, so if they bring a lefty in on a guaranteed contract, it should be a more legit lefty.

Well I guess it's the point that it's not Dennys Reyes that is the problem - it's the fact that he doesnt fit our team. In which case, it's a good point that the role should be more specificed. Although, that only works when your manager realizes what the friggin LOOGY is used for. i.e. Taylor Tankersley. No, he doesnt pitch the inning. Stop leaving him in there. In which case, Dennys Reyes might not be a good LOOGY, but he's a multi-tool one at that which is very important. I try to make that case for any sport. A multi-tool athlete is far more valuable than a defined role. Which is why someone like Taylor Tankersley is incredibly invaluable. He fills up an entire roster spot but is useful for all of 1 batter in any given game, as opposed to a full inning or 2.

He fills up an entire roster spot but is useful for all of 1 batter in any given game, as opposed to a full inning or 2. I don't have a problem with lefty specialists. The thing with Reyes is that he's not getting a minor league deal, and he hasn't been consistently good in the LOOGY role, anyway. A career .246 batting average against, ~3.6 FIP, and 1.33 WHIP against lefties is not something this bullpen needs on a guaranteed contract. A team like the Phillies maybe can use him. He's not terrible in the role, and the Philies still have spots to give in their pen/more payroll flexibility. The Marlins don't need average LOOGY's to fill a spot in the pen. All seven spots are filled. If we're looking for a LOOGY, the LOOGY should be much better than Reyes. Those guys are still out there, as well. It's not as if we have to settle for a guaranteed contract of about 40 non-spectacular innings of Dennys Reyes.
