traded with cash for 2 players to be named later.

Rodriguez's current contract includes a $17.5 million option for 2012 that vests if the right-hander finishes 55 games, and he's already finished 34 games this year for the Mets. If he falls short of that total, the Brewers can buy out the option for $3.5 million.

It was not immediately clear how much cash was involved in Tuesday's trade. It was a significant enough amount that the Commissioner's Office signed off on the deal, Melvin said.

The Mets will choose their players to be named from a list of five Brewers Minor Leaguers by a date in September.

Rodriguez, who is earning $11.5 million this season in the final guaranteed year of a three-year, $37 million contract, had a limited no-trade clause. But the list of teams to which he could block a trade did not include the Brewers.

He's quite a talent for the guys to be PTBNL, as opposed to locked in. Maybe they have some really nice specs and the Mets are just deciding which nice spec??

By the way, the return for K-Rod should set a bar for what a Nunez trade might bring in; obviously Leo brings in less, although he is much cheaper next year. But it should show us the ceiling. Now if we can just get Heath Bell traded, Nunez may be one of the best guys available.

Probably not much, Mets were desperate to salary dump him before that 2012 option kicked in.

I'd say Leo brings in more.

The Mets made this trade to dump salary. KRod's value wasn't all that high considering that everyone knew the Mets would have to pay his 17.5 million dollar option next year if he finished a certain amount of games.

Leo is much cheaper and just as good (if not better) at this point in their respective careers.

This should be interesting. At first I thought this could mess with Axford's psyche. Now I read where K Rod's new agent, Boras, is yapping about how K-Rod is not a set up guy. Also, his option kicks in (about $17.5 mill) with ending 21 more games and Boras said that you wouldn't want an unhappy guy in the clubhouse. If he does not reach that number, then I believe the buyout is 3.5. Will be fun to watch.

That's fair; I didn't realize his option was that expensive. Wow.
