canada-marlin24
I really hope that he doesnt start pitching well so that he gives the front office confidence that he can be good like he did last year.
Dr Beinfest
EXTEND HIM AND VAZQUEZ AND NOLASCO AND ALL OF THEM! They're all roller coaster rides. Not suitable for a winning season. Well, perhaps Nolasco, and Vazquez just because we need to replace Volstad. But for all things sanity, keep Chris Volstad far away.
gizmo
We may not have any other choice. Vazquez seems like he wants to retire at the end of the season, so that leaves us with JJ(please god), Sanchez, Nolasco and Volstad. Hand is not ready yet, Hensley isn't a starter anymore and Sanabia might need more time. Unless the team goes out and gets CJ Wilson and/or Mark Buehrle (or other FA pitchers that are better than Volstad), you can pretty much look forward to another season for Volstad. TrustN61
Yeah, who exactly are we going to replace Vazquez and Volstad? I'm betting that they keep Volstad for insurance.
popeyethesailor
Vollie is pitching good now. His las t eight starts he had given up 4 earned runs or fewer and only won one game. The last three in a row have been quality starts and has two losses to show for it. Poor run support. He will be fine next year.

And probably the year before. And he certainly finished the year before that off strong. He finishes every year off strong. But he also sucks until that point. He always has, and always will. canada-marlin24
I want him to get raped in his next start. And he always shows up when the games mean sh*t.
97marlin
He is 24 with good stuff, we are going to move him. If he ends the season in his normal way with lots of success. I bet we could trade another teams problem for him. there are a lot of young pitchers out there, and a good number with stuff and bad numbers. a change of scenery could be good for one of them. who knows maybe we'll get an ace. All i know is i'd rather risk getting another bum, then stick with volstad.
Sirspud
Volstad always starts pitching decent once the games stop mattering.
Erick
Volstad didn't pitch better in the 2nd half last year. I hate when people say that. Lets stop being a bunch of Tommy Hutton's. Just because he got more wins doesn't mean he pitched better; he was still the definition of mediocrity.
Dr Beinfest
Sure he did... his last games were good quality pitching. He pitched a complete game shutout. Lets not forget, 3 games = 2 weeks, remove one and that's where we're at right now in the season.
97marlin
Is he worth trading? Pitchers develop later then Hitters, and he is relatively young at 24. Of what i've found scouts love him, even with his bad numbers. So realistically what can we get for a guy with "great" stuff, and bad numbers? not a lot, so i would almost say lets give him another year. maybe start him in the miners. Not give up on chris volstad in south florida.

Pitchers definitely can develop later than hitters, but what's bothersome about Volstad is that his stuff just doesn't seem to be very effective against major league hitting. A lot of pitchers learn how to harness their stuff better, or how to have better command. I'm not so sure that Volstad's ineffectiveness is going to drastically improve. Michael
He hit a double off of Strasburg! KEEP HIM!

The problem is at this moment i don't really see another option in terms of a trade. we might get someone like bonifacio obvious young talent with lots of room to grow. but then again you never know, and considering the front office hasn't hidden the fact that they would like to get rid of him i don't expect to get a rough diamond. Which is really why i sit at the point where it doesn't seem like the worst thing to give him a chance to learn in the miners or another year in the rotation. Plus he has shown in every start that he has great stuff, and the ability to be a good pitcher. His problem has been he lets one inning get away from him, and i feel that is something that can be developed with time.
Sirspud
I'm not necessarily saying trade or keep him. Honestly with this franchise assume that they could trade anyone and get anything worthwhile is asking for too much.
marlin2266
Is Vollie coming up for arbitration? Even mediocre gets $2 mil a year or so.......
popeyethesailor
Is Vollie coming up for arbitration? Even mediocre gets $2 mil a year or so....... If Nolascos mediocre 4.44 career ERA is worth almost $9 million per year what is Volstads somewhat worse mediocre 4.65 career ERA worth? How does the arbitration system work? Players don't get the same in arbitration than they would as free agents. Also their pay increases every year, barring catastrophic seasons, so a guy entering his first year of arbitration will probably get a salary in the millions, but it won't break the bank. Erick
Volstad is also nowhere near as good as Nolasco. I just wanted to add that to the discussion.
Dr Beinfest
Agreed. Nolasco has really good stuff... he just forgets to bring it sometimes. Volstad... forgets his decent stuff. All the time.

Fish4Life
Volstad will be in the rotation no doubt next season.
popeyethesailor
Looks like lucky Volstad draws Strasberg again so his terrible run support will likely continue.
